A businessman from the late 1800 Orloff earned his fortune as a merchant. Opening a store he specialized in goods to the immigrant Chinese population. He quickly became a source for goods that were difficult to find.
In the early 1920’s he bought a block in the Old Cathedral district to renovate. He ordered an apartment complex to be built. The building seemed to be constructed overnight. Soon after its completion Orloff decided to take a world cruise. He never returned as the ship, the Pacific Gem.
