Races
All races are monotheistic and, except for humans, all solely worship the True God. Only certain humans worship the Dark Lord. In fact, the Dark Lord will not accept any race but humans as worshipers. As a result, the nonhuman races often distrust humans, even those known to be good, for many a man has been known to change his allegiance. Humans are the most treacherous of races.
The Dark Lord has enslaved the nonhuman races or driven them to the corners of the world in bloody attempts at genocide. Some races known to exist before the coming of the Dark Lord are no more.
Dwarves
Some say the dwarves were created by the highest servants of darkness to work as slaves; others that they antedate all other races, being part of the original creation, since in many ways they are the most earthy. Regardless, those nations that worship the Dark Lord have used dwarves as slaves for many centuries, particularly in mining and construction. Any dwarf found in those lands can expect rough treatment at best, forced servitude at worst.
Elves
Elves are very rare and inhabit only remote wilderness. Elves prefer to leave humans to settle their own problems, but may soon have no choice but to become involved, lest the world be conquered by darkness. Elves have never been enslaved, though they can definitely expect to be hassled should they venture into areas controlled by the Dark Lord.
Halflings
Once thought to be an effete race which would perish in the genocidal wars, halflings have proven a tough, determined opponent of the Dark Lord. Their small size and hardy constitution have proven ideal for the rigors of living in inaccessible mountain strongholds and deep forest cities. The halflings have claimed lands even the dwarves and elves prefer to leave uninhabited. Halfling guerrillas are known for their ferocity and feared throughout the lands that worship the Dark Lord.
Humans
Humans of the Eastern Empire uniformly worship the True God. Those humans inhabiting lands occupied by the Dark Lord at least give the appearance of worshiping their ruler; otherwise, they invite torture and death.
Orcs
Orcs have become tame in the sense that they do not routinely war against all other races, but only against those humans serving the Dark Lord. However, orcs remain uncivilized, and they are looked upon as barbarians by most members of the other races.
