Looking For Players!
This is still me being lazy and it still being better writing than my own A Crudely-Made Journal (Sessions 7+)
If we end up playing this game, we can post here about it…
Hey good game yall. 525 exp for the day! not bad, not bad at all.
Total time on puzzles = 53 minutes; total fails = 7; total passes = 4
Other best time = 47 min, 8 fails, 4 passes
hey that’s pretty good.
I really liked this session. The rat fight was funny. I believe we should try to do more fight in a row, being more defensive. Not only trying to win the current fight but also trying to pass the next encounter without resting for hours.
Some questions about the game mecanics. Do we really have to SLEEP to get an extended rest ? I mean, the characters tends to sleep 18 hours a day in a dungeon even if I am exercising the 6 others hours.
Yea that does present a problem. I would think that would be fine. But still only a portion of your resting could be considered as watch.
Duration: An extended rest is at least 6 hours long.
✦ Once per Day: After you finish an extended rest,
you have to wait 12 hours before you can begin
✦ No Strenuous Activity: You normally sleep during
an extended rest, though you don’t have to. You can
engage in light activity that doesn’t require much
✦ Regain Hit Points and Healing Surges: At the end
of an extended rest, you regain any hit points you
have lost and any healing surges you have spent.
✦ Powers: At the end of an extended rest, you regain
all your encounter powers and daily powers.
✦ Action Points: At the end of an extended rest, you
lose any unspent action points, but you start fresh
with 1 action point.
✦ Interruptions: If anything interrupts your extended
rest, such as an attack, add the time spent dealing
with the interruption to the total time you need to
spend in the extended rest.
so if ur staying watch that can still count towards an extended rest. and our interruption just adds around 60 seconds to our total rest time…
what are our plans for this coming weekend? are we playing? if so, which campaign?
I think neither josh nor mike are available this week end.
Well yea, I’m going home this weekend. So no games from me, and I believe that Josh has Kara coming home this weekend. But as for next weekend (Aug. 9th) I am available to DM or Play!!
Keep the posts going and send funny videos :-)
DIVINE POWER is OUT!!!!
Mike are you OK ? you were so much jumping all over the place you got hit by a car. Are you alright ? :)
Ok so we will post here now
mike : stop philosphying! :) (Is there anything like ‘to philosophy’)
I get your point. If role playing is just puting sentences and detailed context between fights then it is f-ing boring. Role playing defines how you play a challenge. Has Aaron pointed out, looting is part of Gravendar. So Josh must assume that whatever shiny is in the game, we are going to find it. Edrienne is an other character. She is a city girl; she likes pretty/expensive clothes. So she likes being clean. As a matter of fact, she didn’t went in the muddy water last time. Even if it was a better strategy, she would not have gone until her life is on the edge. She did not joined you on the best sleeping spot because she was afraid of falling in the water. And when she’ll have to jump over the hole in the ground to reach the other room, she WILL use her jump spell on it. It IS ridiculous, but she’ll do it.
We mainly (only?) played hack n slash. The other part of the game is investigation. An object has been stolen, a murder has been committed, someone disappeared… In this part of the game, roleplaying becomes much more important. The DM can hide clues in the acting of the NPCs/description of the world. So he should role play the characters. A NPC is in buisness and proud of his image and you need information or help from him. You can negociate for sure. What about gaining information from concurent and blackmailing him ? What about setting a trap to have something to blackmail him with ? What about punch him in the face so hard he’ll tell you ? What about talking to his insignificant secretary he uses as a slave ?
Role play is what makes the same game/scenario different with each group of players. I have seen game really going crazy when a player made up a lie which would have been okay but not for this particular character. It sounds so wrong “You are an art lover and you did not notice the painting is a forgery!”; the character actually never went to the room. The DM pushed and the lie was quickly exposed. It was not a matter of ‘do your bluff check’, it was just not possible. Role play really enhanced the game that day. It changed the whole end of the session.
About how to play a character which is not you. It is clearly difficult and it takes time to define who is this character. But with time, you start fitting in your characters.
OMG These guys are fffucking awesome!!! Totally re-taught me how to play the game of D&D. They have 3 long “sessions” divided up in 8 part as a podcast. if you have like 2 hours to spare over the next couple weeks totally check this out… Hilarious
Session 1 & 2 Podcasts
funny comics to go along with the sessions too
Episode 1 of session 3
They are like the equivelent of nicorete gum for a heavy smoker…... They give you that (table-top game fix), and!... when your done with it.. you still have gum!
Hayden wrote: “I personally find myself getting bored with “personality role-playing” cuz even a Dick like Aasimov wouldn’t b a dick the whole time and then I find myself just acting how I would act. So I normally just do wut “I” would do.”
This is true, Asimov would NOT be a dick the whole time, and in fact he’s slowly starting to come around – note how he called Josh’s character “friend” when he was kicked out of the keep. But again, that’s part of the whole “evolving” I mentioned before. Asimov IS a dick, but the more time he spends around people who aren’t the stuck-up snobs he’s been around since birth, since he’s forced to live outside those walls now, he loosens up and starts to pull the giant stick out of his ass. He still has the air of superiority but he now doesn’t “feel dirty” working with “Lessers.” He’s not completely converted yet since he still thinks of you guys as Lessers, but it’s a start.
Role-playing starts with the character creation: “what imaginary creature do I want to be?” And even if you pick to be human, it still part of it. Hayden, I think you’re getting the impression that role-playing is all talking and “acting a role” but its not. It’s true that that’s a large part of it, but you can act a role without ever saying a word.
We all, as individuals, are not just THIS or THAT, but a collection of different things. Some things everyone can see, but others we kind of hide. Not that we’re necessarily ashamed of those feelings or thoughts, but because we choose to put on a different face – for whatever reason. For example: I’m a big, slightly-overweight, socially-awkward guy that has the mind of a child, gets easily distracted, tends to break things because he’s clumsy, who’s occasionally a dick (among other things.)
Now when I make my characters, I try to put a few of those qualities I have within myself into my character. Gravendarr is basically me in a nutshell, and Asimov is the Inner-dick out in full force, just wrapped up in royal “i’m better than you” snobbery. I try to bring out a few “hidden” qualities and play with them with my characters. I can let them be the huge dick that I, personally, would never be. While I’m big, clumsy, and prone to anger, I would never smash a guy’s head in with anything (but I’ve thought about it) so I create up Gravendarr and do it through him.
And maybe I’m at an advantage because I’m a writer; maybe I can play a whole bunch of different types of characters because I have them all created in my head for my stories. but to me, that’s the fun of it; to make up this completely new character (even if its inspired by all of my personal abilities and flaws) and just have fun and be wild. But also, its about letting myself do those things that I normally wouldn’t or couldn’t do. I’m never going to be an adventurer. I’m never going to be able to do anything noble, or grand, or heroic to save the world. I’m never going to be able to be victorious in battle and have shiny after shiny rain down on me in an eternal deluge of goodness. But my characters will, and through them so will I.
And in the end, not everyone is cut out to role-play. Maybe your mind just doesn’t work like that, and if so that’s fine. All you really need to do is have fun, and if what you’re doing now is fun for you, great. All I’m saying is, maybe, spice it up some and try something different. You always play the Rogue/Ranger? Well, how about a Paladin or Wizard next time? You might struggle with it at first, but once you get the hang of it, you might find you’re having more fun than before. And we’re always here to help ya if you need it.
Sorry about the longness of that, I got on a role and kept going.
Also, another example of role-playing: In Josh’s campaign when we were going down into the slums to look for that guy, and we had to ask directions to where he lived. When that bum wouldnt’ tell me, I punched him, knocking him out. That wasn’t the way to get information, obviously, but it was COMPLETELY what Gravendarr would have done. That, in itself, is classic role-playing. Sometimes it just comes natural. Sometimes you have to work for it.
And yeah, Mike, I’ve listened to those Penny Arcade/PvP podcasts, they’re absolutely hilarious. Makes me long to play D&D everytime I hear them. The comics aren’t have bad either.
And who said your not a good writer?!!
Well in an effort for me to not beat that beaten-dead-horse, I will just say that I think we are some of the best D&D players the world or fantasy world has 3var SCEENE>!
So for this weekend (sunday, high-noon): update your characters ONLINE to level 4; Hayden add your character please or no ply; Everyone be ready to from Trickery and Turmoil!!
okay so i know i never post. but you can normally expect that i am in the same boat as hayden. i like 3.5 i like 4.o better. i like violence. hack and slash with a purpose. no straight linear, i like something more like a guided route with alot of badies. but barring that i am pretty much up for anything new. if we are playing mikes adventure that’d br cool too. i know we just got to the tower so def up for that
Proof Asimov is NOT a dick
Nice Aaron. :)
The play was good. Thunderwave is definitely a nice power. And recall Edrienne’s lesson number 1. If there is no more fighters, mages can charge!
BTW, Edrienne is now wet and dirty and she is really pissed about it.
I just wanted to post that mike’s comment of having a leader instead of another defender is 100% correct. was looking at them and they would help A LOT. and i kno how much mike likes being right (lol) so i figured id just post this and give that to him lol.
when do we play again btw? oh and as mike pointed out, we have 10 hrs until we can take an extended rest, so wut do we plan on doing?
I vote on sitting around and reading my books!!
okay so just wanted to say that haydens leader is a beast. just what we need. also had a great time on sunday. sorry i had to leave early. i have volleyball every sunday for then next 3 weeks. so i can def play but i will have to leave at 530 each time. i donno what we are gonna do about the resting. but all i know is that we need it, we got our shit owned in those battles considering i was takng mass damage, no healer, no leader, and our crew was way spread out. no armor for me. most of us a low on surges (hayden and I) and i think we all used our dailys. i know aaron used some. so we def need the rest.
hey guys, found two rules that might help us out:
Aaron, since u will have the most chances being resisted to and getting fucked:
“When damage of a power is described as more than one type, divide the damage evenly between the
damage types (round up for the first damage type, round down for all others). For example, a power
that deals 25 fire and thunder damage deals 13 fire damage and 12 thunder damage.”
-so if some1 is immune to fire, and ur attack says “fire, radiant” they still take half of the damage.
and secondly, since we’ve been fighting in the water so much:
“crossbow weapon groups take no penalties to attack rolls with those weapons while fighting underwater. Characters using any other weapon take a –2 penalty to attack rolls”
- might’ve helped us out a little bit as well, just make a mental note (we might’ve had a -5 due to the water being so murky, but if we were fighting above the water, or in the combat b4 that with the rat swarm this could’ve helped i think)
I have nothing scheduled for the next sundays. So I am up for D&D.
Edrienne have 3 surges left (so 24 hit points) and still have her daily sleep. And everybody still have an action point. So I think we can take one more encounter.
But we should try not to be completely wasted when we take an extended rest. Since night attacks would turn out to be deadly or would cost us powers for the following day.
We can also have two guards on duty during an extended rest. It will make an extended rest 10 hours long but we can still have one per 24 hours. We should also take into account breakfast (with chocolate croissants for mike :) ) and lunch. Since the idea behind ‘1 extended rest per day’ is to make it more realistic, we should also have a more realistic time usage. With the same idea, we should take more time in general. There were a lot of books, we should took 2 hours to quickly read them. The Paladin should have buried (again) the dead. It might give us some information, it makes sense, and it lets the time flow.
About fighting in water, thunderwave is a good power for that. :)
um, theren has like 20 HP and no surges, so if u spent all ur surges to give health to me(3 standard actions, which can only b done in combat) i could b taken to full, w/ no surges, u would have no surges, curt only has 3 (which is very little for a defender) and idk about asimov, but he spent a lot of health on us during that last one. Or, you could spend 2 and curt could spend one, but then i just used up our defenders standard action and still wouldn’t b able to take my 2nd wind. shitty situation either way so, i REFUSE to do another self-inflicted encounter. we dont need to FORCE a TPK.
my vote is to just go back to that other room, lock ourselves in one of the buildings that still has a door, say FML, and just bandage wounds and sleep FOREVER until we all feel good as new…
about fighting in water, fire keywords suffer a -2 to hit but thats it, so asimov can still use all his shit…
I agree, it is dangerous and a night encounter after could really be fatal. (what does TPK stands for ?)
Total Party Kill, thought we might b getting somewhat close that last encounter when curt had no more ways to heal, i had no more surges and at negative values so… ya, another encounter = bad
There’s always the option of leaving. I know we don’t usually do that, but with everything how it is, we might be best to head back, sell all of our junk, buy what we can to make us more kickass (including crossbows if that’s what you want) and then head back in and continue exploring. we have the giant glowing rod, so we can “lock” the main door behind us, and while some enemies might “respawn” once we leave, I don’t think everything will. Unless, of course, Mike is in his “kill everyone and laugh” mood again.
I wouldn’t mind leaving and coming back, fine by me. Buy some healing potions or some shit I guess they’re expensive though. I think like 90gp/potion?
well we have quite a haul in our group treasury. but now that Josh is out, we need to spend 1000 or so on a Bag of Holding or Mike will probably not let us load up the loot. I’m pretty sure he’ll let us sell what we have now, but I’m pretty sure he won’t let us do it for much longer. Plus, I have that dead Goblin corpse too listed on here, and I know that the other group of Goblins where going to attack to kill him, so we might get bonus points for delivering his corpse to them. shrugs
Lol well I guess a bag of holding would b nice to have, maybe gonna have to look up some magic items to buff my health/AC or sumthin. I’m gonna have to b more front line, so ur our primary striker now Asimov! Get some big-ass spells now, I wanna see some serious damage!
PS: I think this artifact is wut Asimov needed in his life to bring him back to reality and b a good member of society. So that’s good, cuz he did show some compassion in the last encounter…
even if he IS a dick, huh? lol
of course, we’re assuming that the fort place even HAS a shop. remember, we’re in the middle of BFE here. We’ve seen a bar, and a reading area, but what else do they have? I’m hoping we missed the shop area when we first came in….
hm… i dont think there is much in this town, checked w/ curt and thats wut he said so idk. im kind of at a loss, i guess just rest up and keep trudging along?
okay so i finally got the full version of the character builder. and i leveld up ballreich. I donno what i did when i leveld him before. I thought i never did, but i was not sure. but either way. i will post the new (actually) leveld ballreich. I did not choose the warlord multiclass feat because we got the unconscious thing. so i chose the fighter multiclass feat.
So lets put a few things on the table.
1) Michael now realizes that with the change over from 3.5 the encounter challenge listings (what I total up) is not set for a party of 5 adventurers instead of 4. So congrats on having an encounter for 1-ECL above your own levels and with one less character. That encounter was supposed to take about 2 hours to complete so yea I wasn’t surprised.
2) Tactically the isotcu (Ioun Stone of the Collective Unconscious) should take the place of healing abilities of a leader and will (I think) make the game more interesting. If I’m wrong, I will add more healing. The isotcu took a while to make so I would say at least give it a chance.
3) Encounter wise when I build them. It’s designed that party should be able to do a solid “days” work before they really need to rest. You’ve already had three-encounters in about 2 hours. Its also hard to fill a day if a party’s mentality is “well we finished that battle, lets hurry to the next.”
4)Aaron’s journal is aawesome, period. I read it twice.
5) Not sure if you remember… but the giant-stone-doors-with-the-puzzles-that-you-had-to-do-to-get-into-this-place. Yea their closed… So going back to town right now is not really an option.
6) If one of you has a person in mind that they would like in the campaign I wouldn’t be opposed. But I think 4 is the magic number.
7) I guess not one is interested in checking out Earthdawn? Darn I was hoping to let my inner bard out. Oh well, Bard Rival character it is.
8) The next time I can DM is the weekend of the 24th/25th
~Love & Peace or Hit it & Crit it
Well, okay, I guess leaving is not an option. But Mike, IS there a shop in the fort? And will we be able to go to it and do some shopping soon? because we all could use some new items. remember, I started this campaign naked….
About carrying the loot. Edrienne can summon a Tenser’s Floating Disk. But she can not sustain it for more than 2 or 3 days since she does not have enough components. Is there useful stuff in the loot ?
She also have the enchant magic item rituals, so if we have the right components, she can make stuff.
About rushing into encounters. I think we should have a more precise look at the history books. We may be able to learn more about lady saharel. There is also necromancy books. I thought we were leaving the cemetary with the “mosoleum” room but undead keep coming. We should have a look at them as well to know what we will encounter next.
Maybe some1 owns and operates a shop w/in the tower? Just thinkin out loud… Lol
Make sure no1 forgets about searching the ENTIRE room of undead that we just battled. People don’t enchant dead bodies to attack people for no reason…
Maybe the stone could help us pick which books to read since it hates undead so much?
And I think curt and I have started to figure out the talking telepathically thing, but maybe a wizardy guy would like to help us?
Discussion of the session:
“Hey that was a whisp of shadow..(Thinking)
Did u just see a whisp of shadow? (Speaking)
Ya I just saw a whisp of shadow (speaking)
Omg he saw a whisp of shadow (thinking)
I know! I just said I saw a whisp of shadow (speaking)
Did he just hear me think I thought he saw a whisp of shadow? (Thinking)
Yes! I just saw a whisp of shadow!!! (Speaking)”
Mike: ok, u guys r getting attacked now…
AND I kno mike got pissed about us joking OoG about the “whisp of shadow”, but that f’n role playing at its best! Not quite ewok jokes to wreck a campaign BUT I thought it was pretty funny
I found that funny as well! :)
I found it funny also, but you know Mike…. lol
as for the books, Asimov would LOVE to read up on the Necromancy books but if he learns necromancy, won’t the Artifact dislike him more since it dislikes undead/unconscious?
Basically you know that you can get a “feeling” from the artifact like you would from a persons body language. PS- intelligent undead creatures probably would have an unconsious (that how you describe they don’t remember their life as a living being) and definately a sub-conscious. Read Open Grave, cool book… Zombies = no unconscious, Skeletons = unconscious, Golem = no unconscious, Golem with attached soul = unconscious, Drunk girl = unconscious
As far a components for rituals, many could be scrounged from the archanists vault or components can be made from “disenchant magic item” should the need ever arise.
Oh so before O’grim “vanished” He said that you all are about 900 feet undergound and still not under where the tower is. But he thinks your close…
love & peace or hit it & crit it
Here is a list of what’s in the bag. It’s mostly just crap off enemies that I “Gravendarr’d” If you guys want anything, let me know and I’ll take it off the list (because you’ll be adding it to your own. This is in case Mike says we can’t keep hauling around all of it without a magic bag. The small things like the Mortal and Pestle and the Ingredients will stay there for the moment, as will all the more valuable trinkets. But anything else, let me know.
with exception to the light shields and the massive mound of hide armor its won’t be too heavy.
Asimov give me an insight check… yes I’m serious
22 total. what’s up?
With Edrienne frantically casting prestidigitation to dry off the most valuable books that she just absconded with, you drop some off the immense load off your back to rest. As your breathing once again becomes normal you notice something, or don’t notice something rather… The body of the now dead kobold Scannosug is failing to omit the odor of decay. Unlike most of this long forgotten crypt
well that’s because we Prestidigitated the hell out of him so he’d keep. Or is it something more? Like he’s waking up? lol
Well your right next to him and he seems pretty dead.
YOU’RE KEEPING A DEAD KOBOLD IN A BAG?
I think it is more like. Some lich (or whatever) bring him as an undead.
We’re toting around his corpse so we can get the reward from the other group. Plus, he’s FIRMLY tied up with the chain; even if he does become revived, we’ll be able to tell before he can break out and do any harm.
But if it’s not his corpse that is different, that would mean its the other corpses that are the ones standing out. maybe its because he’s still recently dead and the things we killed have been dead for a very long time. Maybe Mike is trying to let us know that we’ve wandered into some old-magic reincarnation voodoo-necromancy shit.
hmm. Recall there were fresh zombies around as well despite no one came here for a long time. Could time pass slower in here ? I think we encountered “timing issues” before, near the “magic tower” we could not get in. ?
yeah, something about how the tower looked ruined from a distance, but once within the “magic boundary” the tower appeared as it did during that ghost lady Saharal(?)’s time. also, those zombies weren’t intelligent undead like the skeletons, and the mage guy couldn’t reanimate them (again) once we killed them the first time. shrugs still don’t know what it all means, though
DM, are there magic rituals (or whatever the appropriate name is) that could slow time down ? Can Edrienne detect such a magic if it is in use ?
Yeah, Asimov’s too new to his magic to figure out any of the really big stuff. Have to leave that to Edrienne since she’s known magic longer.
You do that there are things in the world that can slow time… temporarily. But You know that is reserved for only the most powerful Arcane Wizardry.
Great. We’re facing powerful arcane wizardry. and I thought the basic undead were a pain in my snobby ass.
well i would not know anything about all that but if he is undead or turning undead i am sure a heal check could be in order on my part
doot doo doo
So do we want/can to play this sunday? Let me know
Love & Peace or Hit it & Crit it
If this application had not kill me yet, I’d be up for a game on Sunday.
Idk wut he just said / is talking about lol but I’m in! If it decides to not rain on saturday I might b a lil bit late sunday but from wut I’ve seen I don’t think that will happen
Yeah It was not crystal clear.
I am applying for a job and the application procedure requires me to write a long (too long) document. I’ve been working every night until 2/3am for a week and I am still not done.
so you’ve become a mini Josh then?
My beard is greater than his!!!
A Crudely-Made Journal ( Sessions 1-6) and A Crudely-Made Journal (Sessions 7+) FTW!!!
What? Asimov writes longer entries than Gravendarr so I run out of space quicker. Those things only hold so much before it starts deleting stuff.
So aaron are you in for this weekend? What about curt?
I am sure it is going to be vampire time on sunday.
