After our adventurers traveled back to Vallaki, they returned to town to discover an official of the Barovian branch of the Church of the Morninglord named Christoph, who was interrogating locals about a Caliban that may have entered the region recently. He was seeking it out to destroy it, and tracked it to Vallaki.

Upon questioning Reynard, he decided to talk to Charsen about the issue, who called a town meeting with the locals to announce the threat of the Caliban and to ask for them to be vigilant. While the Church held the meeting, Charsen and Reynard noticed a shadowed figure heading towards the town Inn. Charsen and Reynard asked Elaana and Kadar to come with them to town to investigate this stranger while Christoph and Heda stayed at the Orphanage.

Our adventurers went to the Inn first, and noticed a broken window and a possible intruder. After Reynard determined no one was present in the Inn, he found tracks leading off towards the North side of town, near Elaana’s home.

Indeed, the strange figure was again spotted by Reynard’s keen eyes, and the group circled a barn in an attempt to corner the beastly being, who was crawling on its roof. Elaana disappeared, leaving Reynard, Charsen and Kadar to investigate the barn. When they noticed she was missing, Reynard led them through the woods to Elaana’s home, which was closed shut and definitely occupied.

Shortly after arriving at her home, Christoph and the local constable Bruhn managed to follow Charsen and Kadar’s trail through the woods and meet them at Elaana’s home. Christoph was livid and immediately began charging the door, suspecting the Caliban was inside. Reynard was able to convince the Barovian Church official to hold his weapon and allow Reynard to enter and talk to Elaana first. Reynard entered the home to discover the Caliban was just a girl – a strange, beastly girl, but a girl nonetheless. Elaana explained that she felt that this so-called Caliban- named Kailen – needed protection from Christoph, and Reynard agreed.

Meanwhile, Charsen waited with Christoph, who began rabidly charging the door to the home. Charsen’s hesitation ended when he witnessed Christoph’s brutal and unnecessary attack on Reynard, which left the woodsman at death’s door on the ground. From behind, Charsen cleanly knocked his weapon into Christoph’s head causing him to pass out. Then Charsen, Reynard and Elaana helped the Caliban escape and took Christoph to the Church.

Before this point, while they had all traveled together, it was clear that the characters did not truly form a “team” yet. When Charsen decided to take their side against Christophe, Elaana and Reynard began to trust Charsen and the “team” was naturally united against a common foe.
