The last great human empire has fallen. Only a few bright spots of civilisation remain, among them the great cities of Ptolus and Greyhawk. During a time of peace and growth, humans built the Empire Road between those places. Now, the Empire Road is about the only decent road left in the world. Caravans still journey along it, but the way becomes ever more treacherous.
