Sagris, the Mad
Sagris was a great wizard who lived 400 years ago. He was, unbeknownst to him, the direct offspring of a great wyrm gold dragon named - who took on human form and seduced Sagris’ mother. The dragon’s blood was clearly manifested in the young Sagris, as magic came to him naturally. The only outward traits on Sagris’ lineage were his eyes, captivating spheres of gold. Although he had the gift of sorcery, Sagris chose instead to train as a wizard under a well-known Conjurer in Corymr(who just so happened to be a the purple dragon himself)
Somewhere along his study, he came across a dark, obsidian-like stone. Being, by specialization, an enchanter, Sagris quickly identified that the material had great powers when imbued with magic. He settled in Suzail and began carrying out strange and wonderful experiments with the bizarre stone. As his experiments continued, Sagris’ sanity diminished: the stone’s nefarious properties were driving him mad. One fateful night, a mishandled experiment destroyed Sagris’ lab and several nearby building, killing several residents and nearly killing him as well. Sagris’ wounds were healed by the local clergy, and only by the mercy of the Prince Regent of the time was he was banished from the city and not executed.
Sagris took up residence in the nearby Castle Kilgrave, which had recently been overrun by kobolds. He enslaved the serpentine creatures and through fear tactics used them as cheap labor to build him a new lab. For a time, he stayed there, running experiments and attracting followers, whom he sent all across the land to procure any more of the strange stone that could be found. Eventually, one of his followers told Sagris that he had found a massive stone of the same variety, far within the bitter chilled wilderness of Icewind Dale. Sagris sent several expeditions to return him large shards from the massive crystal which he studied further and learned to focus their magical attunement even further. However, in another failed experiment, Sagris ended up destroying Castle Kilgrave, once again almost killing himself. His follower Malidon, the only survivor of the explosion, rescued him and nursed him back to health.
Sagris decided to relocate to Icewind Dale, where he constructed a massive tower around the great crystal. It was during this time that Sagris discovered the magic amplifying properties of the monolithic crystal. It was also during this time that Sagris slipped further into his instanity, becoming paranoid and deranged. Feeling that the rest of the world was plotting his demise, he developed weapons to destroy them and created the means to restore him to life if they ever succeeded in killing him. From the obelisk, he fractured several shards and fashioned them into weapons. One of the shards became the Riven Blade, the key to this world’s destruction and Sagris’ rebirth.
Eventually he learned how to maximize the crystal’s properties by carving and cutting them much like gems. He carved the huge stone into an elaborate monolith that he named the Obelisk of Undoing. He then bound his soul to the obelisk, so that if he were ever destroyed, his soul would return and wait until his wrath had been visited upon the world. They key to this was the Riven Blade. Each species and race that it slew would be cataloged so that when it was placed within a specially crafted recess within the Obelisk, it would send pulses through the ley-lines of the world, destroying members of those species and races.
Malidon Ugris
Malidon, upon first glance, is a young wizard of the unassuming type. Scatterbrained and unaware at the best of times, he seems harmless enough. In battle, he is hesiant and timid. His stature and appearance also add to this illusion, as he stands a mere 5’3” and is rather light and thin at 110 lbs.
However, Malidon holds a secret. He is powerful, abitious, and calculating. His true allegiances lie with his master, Sagris: a wizard who has been dead for 400 years. The very same wizard who created the Riven Blade and the Obelisk of Undoing. It is Malidon, as head of the apocalypse cult, that has been searching for the Riven Blade for centuries and it is he that must guarantee that the blade be returned to the Obelisk at all costs once it is found.
Malidon, upon hearing that the party has located the Riven Blade, will befriend them and attempt to join the party. If the group disallows, he will follow them in secret as they head to Icewind Dale. At the Obelisk of Undoing, he will attempt to reunite the Blade and Obelisk, most likely using a command or suggestion spell to gain control of it.
Sapiel the Ancient
Sapiel is the sage of Suzail. He is a wise man with the amazing ability to divine almost any bit of lore about anything. It is likely the PC’s will bump into him, or be referred to him, at some point after acquiring the Riven Blade. He will ask to keep the blade overnight, or at least to hold it or touch it in some way. Upon touching the blade it will make a suggestion to tell the party to take the blade to Icewind Dale.
Sapiel will come to his wits moments before the party reunites the two artifacts and will contact them with telepathy and inform them that inserting the Blade into the Obelisk will spell doom for the most life on Toril. How events play out past this point are up to the PC’s.
Seran Ironhand
Seran Ironhand is a nobleman in the city of Suzail. Made wealthy by the ivory trade generations ago, he lives a life of luxury. He is short, stocky man wiht a hearty, cheerful demeanor. He showers hospitality upon those he befriends and trusts and is generally forthcoming and honest with them as well. Yet her will spare no expense in avenging those who have wronged him. It is likely that Seran will be the first important NPC the players will encounter and interact with in any major way.
