o the north and west of the Hammodrans lie the Thangloran waists, an uninhabitable wasteland of snow and ice that stretches ever northward into oblivion. There is a legend that somewhere beyond the expanse of the Thangloran waits lies the ruins of one of the seven lost Elven cities of Avaluriend. Just over a century ago, Divran Osendial, a wizard from the southern lands, arrived at Igladan telling of a city encased in ice that he had glimpsed in a vision. Divran was convinced that the city of his dream was one of the seven lost cities, and that it lay beyond the Hammodrans. Divran’s description of the riches of the alleged city filled many a Dwarf’s heart with lust. Soon after, Divran led an expedition of fifty Dwarves through the northern passage of Anithroth to the Waists in search of the alleged city. None ever returned. The tales of Divran soon became legendary, as did the mystery of the fate of him and his companions. A second expedition, consisting of a mixed party of thirty Dwarves and men soon followed. Five returned, badly wounded, telling of fierce giants. Yet of the promised city, or the fate of Divran, naught was discovered. Excitement over the legend began to give way to the more prescient concern of defending Igladon against the hordes of goblins that swept down from the heights of the Hammodrans, and the armies of Karn to the south. Chroniclers and weavers of tales still speak of the legend from time to time, yet it has otherwise been forgotten.
