Dragons, Scorpions, Drakes and level 2!

June 11, 2009 10:08

The PCs learned a bit from their last experience in Rivenroar and took a more stealthy approach to the next room. They crept forward to find a robed hobgoblin chanting in some arcane language in front of a portal. Two guards stood nearby.

Battle was quickly joined, but the warcaster had already finished whatever he was doing. The guards fell quickly and the warcaster wasn’t looking much better until the portal began to fluctuate wildly and coughed out a Gray Dragon.

Okay it was just a gray dragon wyrmling, but it still put up quite a fight. It nearly managed to eat Kloog and mauled most of the other adventurers….except for Reginald Skydodger who spent most of the fight edging towards the door…

In the end the PCs managed to slay their first dragon (okay it was a wyrmling). They scored some minor cash and a lot of injuries, so they decided to leave Rivenroar and set up camp outside. The rest and their adventures to date had taught the party many lessons that they reflected upon as they slept (i.e. they levelled)

Memorable Moments:

The portal fluctates wildly and then suddenly a warped mass of teeth,
claws and scales spills from the portal. For a second the mass
quivers and blurs, then suddenly it snaps into focus and before you
  stands a dragon!.
Reginald: I guess they where all out of big boy dragons at the
  kiddies school of magic?
Khem chuckles, "Now that is vicious mockery"

Gray Dragon Wyrmling: You amuse me no longer dwarf! I shall feast
 upon your flesh!
Gray Dragon Wyrmling -> [ATTACK] *Claw (vs. AC) [at Khem] [HIT] [15]
Gray Dragon Wyrmling -> [DAMAGE] *Claw [to Khem] [9] [1d6+3 = 9]
Khem -> [DAMAGE] Channel Divinity: Armor of Wrath [radiant] [10] [1d6+4 = 10]
Khem -> Power [Channel Divinity: Armor of Wrath] [imm]
Gray Dragon Wyrmling -> [DYING]

Wisely afraid of pits and stairs, the party’s continued exploration took them to the Von Urstad tomb. A fresco covered the walls, but the room was empty, except for the dead interned there…or so it seemed.

The party’s exploration triggered some sort of automated defenses. Devils sprung forth from the walls and flame poured from the ceiling to form into the shape of scorpions.

The devils turned out to be clay scouts which had a redirect ability the party found to be particularly vexing. The flaming scorpions were magma claws and were much more straightforward….and durable. In the end the party put them down.

A quick check of the surrounding area uncovered their first prisoner trapped in a nearby cell. An old man who turned out to be Sertanian. He had little information about two of the other prisoners Mirtala and Kartenix. There was also a pile of goblin supplies that produced some loot: coin, a small jade statue, and two potions of healing.

Memorable Moments:

The walls of this room are covered with an aged fresco depicting human
knights defeating demons and then riding pegasi into the clouds. Alcoves
line the north and south walls hold the skeletons of those long past. An
inscription along the east wall says “Hail Von Urstadts! Ascend with Glory!”
Khem: Horses with wings bah? As if riding on four legged beasts wurnt bad
enough they have to fly too
Kloog knocks on the tomb.
Kloog: Anyone in there!
Kloog: Did I ever tell you about the time I was chased by zombies?
Khem: Nah wurt happened?
Kloog: they look mean, but a couple whacks with the sword and they
  drop like goblins!
Kloog: they're slow too
Khem: I once knew a priestess of the Raven Queen, now she was a fiery tart
Kloog: Fiery in the sack!
Khem: Nah she carried a torch for me

Fun with Redirect!
Khem -> [ATTACK] Divine Bolts (vs. Ref) [at Clay Scout 3] [HIT]
Clay Scout -> [ATTACK] Redirect (vs. Will) [at Khem] [HIT]
Khem -> [ATTACK] Divine Bolts (vs. Ref) [at Clay Scout 5] [CRITICAL HIT]
Clay Scout -> [ATTACK] Redirect (vs. Will) [at Khem] [HIT]
Khem -> [DAMAGE] Divine Bolts [lightning] [to Kloog] [6]
Khem -> [DAMAGE] Divine Bolts [lightning] [to Tak] [CRITICAL] [10]

Reginald: You'll be more of a liability if you follow us in. It'll
be best for you to wait outside while we recover the artifacts
   and the people.
Sertanian: Alright, but we can't leave without them. If I have to
I'll go in and get them myself!
Reginald: Right then time to get you out of here.
Khem: Please if my goliath friend farts on you, you would die
Sertanian: I stood tall in defense of Brindol against the Red Hand of
Doom boy. I could still put down a goblin!
A barely audible fart squeeks out of Tak's rear as his eyes widen
in surprise at something so pathetic having spawned from his bowels.

After escorting the old man from the dungeon and promising to bring him any artifacts they find, the party found themselves back at the entrance. They opened a doorway they neglected on their first pass…only to find more stairs. For reasons unknown to the DM the party was now committed to walk down the stairs and into the room beyond.

The party quickly ran into (literally) numerous hazardous mushrooms and two rather large and rather angry drakes. It turned out they had found “Gnash” and “Snarl”, these were Sinruth’s pets that Splag mentioned. There was no sign of any turkey legs.

Snarl didn’t last long but Gnash appeared much more adept in avoiding the PCs attacks. Before it died it managed to take several large bites out of a very small Kloog.

Memorable Moments:

Kloog -> Power [Fade Away] [imm]
Reginald: Well.. I guess we can't all hide..
Reginald -> [ATTACK] Vicious Mockery (vs. Will) [at Gnash] [MISS] [7]

Will Nick roll nothing but ones for damage the second session in a row? Will Kloog ever be the first one through the door? What terrible price will the PCs have to pay for leveling 3 xp early?!?
