Storms are closely monitored on Mars, primarily for the purposes of dome maintenance. When sustained winds create dust storms, the dome shields are raised, protecting the glass from being scoured or broken. Once or twice each year there is usually a mega-storm that buries at least one dome. These often require the aid of other domes for sand and rock removal.
