The Sart
The Gendeu have always been known as a passionate people. In Elteare, the Gendeu channel their passion into their art, creating some of the most beautiful, most breathtaking artistic works in the Empire. In Sarten, the people channel their passion, into passion.
The people of Sarten love their city, love their country, and love their queen, and are willing to fight for any of those at any perceived insult (and no one’s better at perceiving insults than the Sarts). Early in Sarten’s history, they had a succession of truly horrible kings. The last mad king of Sart finally met his end with his queen’s dagger thrust through his heart. Rather than commit her to trial, the city cheered and happily crowned her queen.
The Queen is surrounded by her personal bodyguard, known as the Gendarme Rapiers, consisting of a hundred of the finest duelists in the city. Tales of the Gendarme Rapiers talk equally of their love of queen and country, their incredible skill at dueling and their escapades with ladies from all ranks of society, but they are the Queen’s men through and through.
Sarten is a matriarchal society, women hold the property, sit on the councils and generally rule over the men of the domain. It’s also said than the Sarts were born with rapiers in their hands. Children are often given blunted “play” rapiers as presents at an early age. To watch two Sarts fencing is like watching a troupe of entertainers, with leaps, bounds, lunges and rolls.
