03[20:16] * Ell is now known as Jake
[20:17] <jake> hmm
03[20:17] * Jake is now known as Ell
[20:17] <ell> Just wondering what to do
[20:17] <ell> as faras
[20:17] <ell> character concepts
[20:18] <ell> I know I want to run through the tutorials again
[20:18] <ell> and I know I want to try out cruisering things
[20:18] <ell> but I don’t have a set concept in mind for the character itself
[20:19] <ell> and there are so many options
01[20:20] <thomamelas> Hmm…cruisering things. Making sure your big guns are in the rear arc.
[20:20] <jacobkosh> by concept do you mean fluff or build?
[20:21] <ell> fluff. Build comes later, really. Though I guess species is build-ery
[20:21] <jacobkosh> oh btw guys – for xmas bioware has unlocked all the promotional DLC for the two dragon age games (all the preorder shit, bonus stuff, etc.) – http://social.bioware.com/da2/dlc_bundle/
[20:21] <jacobkosh> just fyi if that would be handy to anyone
[20:21] <desc> oh huh
[20:21] <desc> elldren, name her “Descina”
[20:22] <desc> with a bold name like that she will undoubtedly be great
[20:22] <desc> also custom aliens are the coolest :3
01[20:22] <thomamelas> Andorians for life.
[20:23] <desc> I need to actually play dragon’s age some day. I tried to play two of them and got my butt kicked because I’m bad at games apparently. also I guess you are supposed to have mages and stuff.
[20:23] <ell> ugh
[20:23] <ell> i forgot
[20:23] <ell> my bw login
[20:24] <jacobkosh> it’s your origin login now, if that helps
[20:24] <ell> nope!
[20:24] <jacobkosh> sorry :P
[20:24] <ell> oh well
[20:25] <jacobkosh> oh wait
[20:25] <jacobkosh> oh nvm
[20:25] <ell> hmm?
[20:25] <jacobkosh> oh I thought of something but then realized it wouldn’t help
[20:25] <jacobkosh> since it’s your login and not your pass
[20:26] <jacobkosh> they let you use your xbox gamertag to log in
[20:26] <jacobkosh> somehow
[20:26] <jacobkosh> I dn’t remember
[20:26] <ell> it’s ok
[20:27] <ell> i’m not worried on missing out on promo items, like 25% of which i already have unlocked
[20:27] <ell> on a game i haven’t played in over a year
[20:28] <jacobkosh> it will be p. hilarious when I start up a new game someday and my inventory is exploding with this stuff

[20:35] <ell> hmmm
[20:38] <ell> i wonder if i keep my borg officer
[20:39] <desc> is it something you bought? I think most stuff is unlocked for hte account, right?
[20:40] <desc> usually it will say “if you sell it it’s gone” on some specific items like batleths
[20:40] <ell> it’s something i have as a preorder bonus
[20:44] <desc> "Players who purchased this officer prior to Season 5, or received it via the Amazon pre-order / Logitech bundle can claim this item for every Federation character on their account from the “Legacy Unlocks” section of the C-Store. It’s received as a candidate and is bound."
[20:44] <desc> “Starting with Season 5, this officer became a single-character unlock when purchased from the C-Store. The officer now comes packaged in a crate, which can be traded between characters, players, or sold on the exchange. When the crate is opened, the officer becomes a candidate and is bound to that character.”
[20:44] <desc> oh it’s Efficient
[20:44] <desc> that is nice

[20:46] <ell> WB
01[20:46] <thomamelas> Welcome back!
[20:46] <jake> ok, let’s see if this works
[20:46] <jake> I hard reset my router
[20:46] <jake> hopefully that will help
[20:47] <ell> Legacy Unlocks section, huh
[20:47] <jake> oh I got my borg boff from there
[20:49] <ell> yes
[20:50] <ell> boffs confuse me
[20:50] <ell> I have a limited number of spaces for em
[20:50] <ell> but
[20:50] <ell> I keep getting more : /
[20:50] <jake> I know, it is somewhat frustratnig
[20:51] <jake> honestly I am not massively impressed with the bonuses the rare blue and purples give you
[20:51] <jake> so what I did
[20:51] <jake> is I just auction house’d the specific races and genders I wanted
[20:51] <jake> and did all my space barbies up nice
[20:51] <jake> and I just use new boffs to train them if the new one has a skill I prefer
[20:52] <jake> i am much more interested in getting doffs
[20:53] <jake> but so anyway
[20:53] <jake> sidequest night! I’m ready to roll
[20:53] <jake> I haven’t dc’ed yet ;P
01[20:53] <thomamelas> Excellent.
[20:53] <jake> hopefully I am not tempting fate by typing that
[20:53] <desc> log on, collect doff mission successes, ding, reassign, log off
[20:54] <desc> puts feet up on desk
[20:54] <jake> :D
[20:54] <jake> I tell you what I love about the doff system
[20:54] <jake> and this is dorky as hell maybe
[20:54] <jake> but
[20:54] <jake> I like to visit my bridge, and go to my ready room
[20:54] <jake> sit in the chair
[20:54] <jake> and browse the doff assignments
[20:54] <jake> and pretend I’m like, doing it all on one of those data pads
[20:55] <jake> and I’m going to pass it to a yeoman in a miniskirt
[20:55] <desc> ha
[20:55] <desc> I have yet to invite people onto my ship, which I need to do at some point.
[20:55] <desc> but also
[20:55] <desc> sidequests
[20:55] <jake> like it totally feels like the sort of thing you see them doing in the background of every show
[20:55] <jake> yes!
[20:55] <jake> ok so
[20:56] <jake> tonight we’re starting out with the mysterium sidequest I had in mind
[20:56] <jake> but there might be Danger™ so bringing along Thom’s character is perhaps advisable
[20:56] <jake> and then Thom I’d be down to get you started with the AA later this week
01[20:57] <thomamelas> K

[21:03] <jake2099> It’s been two days since the Consilium meeting and all the exciting shenanigans therein. Finn has contacted Elithora and Aurelia and asked you two to meet him at a noodle shop outside of Old Chinatown. He mentions that you might want to bring your “tough friend.”
[21:03] <desc> oh ho
[21:03] <jake2099> The appointment is for 11am, btw.
[21:04] <desc> Are we just driving there, dudes? Sounds routine enough.
[21:05] <ell> Yeah, don’t see why we shuldn’t just all drive there
[21:06] <ell> also is it a weekday?
[21:06] <jake2099> Yes.
[21:06] <jake2099> It’s a Monday, in fact.
[21:06] <jake2099> The Council was on a Saturday night
[21:06] <jake2099> by tradition
[21:07] <ell> Aurelia is grumbling about academics and having to burn sick days
[21:08] <desc> I’m confident this will be worth a sick day. Who knows what atlantean mysteries they’ve sniffed up.
01[21:08] <thomamelas> Is is clearly annoyed with the pair.
[21:09] <desc> Elithora parks her car, clearly the only one in (annoyingly) high spirits and interest.
[21:10] <desc> Is anyone doing any magey checking for traps? I’m walking in, thinking about spicy noodles.
[21:10] <jake2099> You guys have to circle the block before realizing that you’d missed the “noodle shop” – it’s actually much more like a stall, not six feet wide. The neighborhood is of the barred-windows variety – you’re not tremendously far from the Asclepus Clinic, actually. In the day, though, it looks less decayed and sinister and more “rough-hewn” and “lively.”
[21:11] <desc> “That’s what we get for trusting a phone map. Maybe food stalls are new food trucks.”
[21:12] <ell> Aurelia is just in a bad mood over the apparent lack of consideration and sulks into the place
[21:13] <jake2099> Finn is on the sidewalk, leaning against his bicycle, which in turn is leaning against an aluminum shutter lowered over a shop window. He’s wearing some serious bicyclist gear, all dayglo and rubber and gels. He has the face of a trustafarian but an insanely fit body, and he’s wolfing down a massive bowl of noodles.
01[21:13] <thomamelas> Stops at the stall, and then looks at Finn, openly scowling as he takes off his glasses and begins cleaning them.
[21:13] <desc> Elithora waves as she heads to the counter. “Hey Finn. What’s tasty?”
[21:15] <jake2099> He looks up at you guys as you approach. “Oh…” – slurp – “hey, dudettes and dude! Thought I’d show you one of the V’s little secrets. Place makes some of the best real ramen in the city. Cross my heart.” He gives his bowl a lick and tosses it in a nearby overflowing trash bin.
01[21:17] <thomamelas> “You could not have perhaps shown us this secret on a non-work day?”
[21:20] <jake2099> He puts a leg up on the bike set and stretches. His face is placid and unconcerned. “It’s not me, man. I’m a Herald – a messenger. And I’m delivering a message from some of the guys on the Saguenay project. They’ve got a lead, but they’re short-staffed and need someone to follow up on it. And it might be a bit hairy.”
01[21:20] <thomamelas> Examines his glasses before he puts them back on his face. Taking a moment to pick at a bit of non-existant fuzz on his jacket.
[21:20] <ell> Aurelia smiles congenially at the noodler and orders a shoyu ramen
[21:21] <desc> “How hairy are we talking? What kind of lead?”
[21:21] <jake2099> It arrives with breathtaking speed.
01[21:22] <thomamelas> “Define hairy.” Also orders a shoyu ramen.
[21:22] <jake2099> “You guys know what it is Reclaimants do?”
[21:24] <desc> “Oh yes tofu. How hot, like a mediu —” Elithora pauses mid-order and turns back to look at Finn.
01[21:24] <thomamelas> Shakes his head and tucks into the ramen.
[21:25] <desc> Elithora says, “medium,” to the guy at the register and then steps closer to Finn. “Who stole what.”
[21:26] <ell> Aurelia looks at BJ quizzically.
01[21:27] <thomamelas> (I assumed my ramen came as fast as yours did.)
[21:27] <jake2099> “Well, you know how it is. The Mysterium, we’re big on libraries, record-keeping, all of that. ‘Cept sometimes people check things out without asking. Or something happens and they aren’t able to return what they’ve borrowed. Things get stolen and misplaced. Reclaimants get that stuff back.”
[21:27] <jake2099> (it totally did)
[21:28] <jake2099> (and the medium is on the hot side of medium)
[21:28] <ell> (more over getting soy sauce ramen)
01[21:28] <thomamelas> (He had no idea what to order so he copied your order.)
[21:28] <jake2099> (mmm soy sauce)
[21:30] <jake2099> “One wing of the whole Saguenay thing is concerned with mapping ley lines. Figure if there was an ancient kingdom of magic, they probably had a lot of those running through, right? Well, Vancouver and BC actually have a lot – way more than you’d think – but they’re a little, like, restless. They move.”
[21:32] <ell> “So why’d they call us? I’m not a geomancer. You can probably find one around here if you look hard enough.”
[21:32] <jake2099> “I am one,” he says, and looks a bit proud. “I help with the mapping. Anyway, someone higher-up had the notion that if we had a better idea what they were like a while back, we’d be able to track the changes and start extrapolating backwards.”
[21:32] <desc> Eli accepts her bowl and stirs it absently while listening.
[21:34] <ell> Aurelia finishes her bowl. It’s not quite certain when she was eating it, but it’s gone “That sounds like a recipe for shenanigans.”
[21:35] <jake2099> “And the good news is, we have records of that stuff. In fact, we’ve got one dating back to the eighteenth century. There was an Awakened on one of George Vancouver’s boats who traded knowledge with a Squamish shaman. Guy told him all about the lay of the land, and the sailor drew a map.”
01[21:35] <thomamelas> “I am still not seeing the ‘hairy’ part.” Finishes and makes a mental note to come back here again.
[21:36] <ell> Aurelia licks her lips and steps towards Finn and Eli. “You were right, that is some good stuff.”
[21:38] <jake2099> “The bad news is, that map’s not in the Athenaeum. It got checked out back in the seventies by a dude named Priscus, who wanted to use the 70s urban renewal movement as a chance to rebuild downtown in tune with the flow, you dig. But the guy died and his stuff got sold at auction and someone was asleep at the wheel and didn’t get it.”
[21:39] <jake2099> “So there’s a private collector, some Sleeper somewhere, with a ‘rare map’ that he has no idea what it is.”
[21:40] <jake2099> “So…..” Finn shrugs. “I’ve been told to tell you guys that if /someone/ were to steal that map back, the Mysterium would, uh, look favorably on that. And stuff.”
[21:40] <ell> Aurelia grits her teeth. “When did this guy die? That’s going to be a bear to find… or relatively easy, depending.”
[21:44] <jake2099> Finn pulls out a slip of paper. “Priscus was Robin Haversham, a professor at Simon Fraser in Burnaby. He died in 1987. His estate was handled by Lockwell and Accurso. They’re still in biz out west, in Downtown.”
[21:46] <desc> “So we need to find out where it’s stored via this agency and then tip toe to it?”
[21:46] <ell> "Right, so there’s where we start. Just some regular detective work
[21:47] <jake2099> “Yeah, that’s the size of it. Someone there might know, or if you can get a peek at their records…” He shrugs. “They’re a buncha assholes. Never tip.”
[21:48] <desc> Eli bites into a cube of tofu and looks at Aurelia and BJ with a shrug.
[21:49] <ell> “Anything else, Finn?”
[21:52] <jake2099> He shrugs. “Not really. It shouldn’t be anything you three can’t handle. I mean, the way I see it, the worst-case scenario is you gotta break into some rich guy’s penthouse and put a couple guards to sleep or something.”
[21:54] <desc> “Sounds doable. I don’t like the thought of an old map just … floating around out there.”
[21:55] <jake2099> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIIxlgcuQRU
[21:55] <ell> "Let’s go?
01[21:56] <thomamelas> Nods to the group. “Shall we take one car?”
[21:57] <desc> Eli takes a few final slurps. “Makes sense. Let’s do it.”
01[21:58] <thomamelas> Goes to his car and looks like he is mimining removing an item from it before he joins the pair.
[21:58] <jake2099> “Break a leg, duders!” Finn smiles broadly and mounts his bike, pedaling off down an alley you weren’t sure you had seen until just now.
[22:00] <desc> Elithora looks up the address. Who’s driving?
01[22:01] <thomamelas> Not David, his car seats two.
[22:02] <desc> Eli shrugs and jingles her keys. Off we go.
[22:02] <ell> Aurelia grudgingly gets in the back seat
01[22:04] <thomamelas> Gets in the passenger seat and begins putting on his invisable sword belt and sword. Twisting in his seat.
[22:06] <jake2099> The firm is located at the Harbour Centre, a sprawling mixed-zone development on the north side of the peninsula. The buildings are a mix of classic brick and giant glass and steel, with street-level shops beneath apartments and studios.
[22:07] <jake2099> The district is centered around a distinctive skyscraper called, appropriately enough, Harbour Centre, topped with a prominent saucer.
[22:07] <jake2099> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:HarbourNight.jpg
[22:08] <jake2099> or rather http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/76/HarbourNight.jpg/612px-HarbourNight.jpg
[22:08] <desc> Eli cruises by so everyone can get a good look at the building itself. “You think we can sweet talk our way in there, or are we going to filch it?”
[22:09] <ell> “I think you can sweet talk pretty well”
[22:11] <jake2099> According to the directory, Lockwell, Accurso, Reubens and Reed (as the firm is known today) is located on the eighth floor.
[22:12] <desc> Eli flicks her turn signal right and starts making a loop. “What’s our story? The estate agency sold all of this off to a buyer. Are we collectors? Family?”
01[22:13] <thomamelas> “Collectors I think. Family would make them feel like perhaps we would cause problems.”
[22:14] <jake2099> ( streetview btw: https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&safe=off&ie=UTF-8&q=harbour+centre+address&fb=1&gl=us&hq=harbour+centre+address&hnear=harbour+centre+address&cid=0,0,10916669817021185339&ei=8rLGUPG8PMXk2QX1wYHoBQ&sqi=2&ved=0CKgBEPwSMAE )
[22:15] <desc> (huh, the top half the building displays all warped in street view. I detect paradox.)
[22:16] <jake2099> ( >.> )
[22:16] <jake2099> Okay, so you’re going to approach them as collectors?
[22:16] <desc> Eli pulls in to park. “Okay. We’re looking to contact the current owner of the map. He must have had an assortment of research goods. We’re writing a book. A history book.”
[22:17] <desc> “We want to catalog the deep multicultural history of the region, tracking how the peoples who lived here and those who immigrated at different points in history have collectively made it what it is. We want to buy his maps for a fancy color plate inset for the book.”
[22:18] <ell> “Sounds good, doctor…?”
[22:19] <desc> Eli shrugs and beeps the car alarm behind the ground as they approach. “Doctor Rose Conrad. You’re my publishers or researchers or whatever sounds plausible to you.”
[22:20] <jake2099> (since y’all are dressed like academics anyway, any rolls to support this fiction will get an extra die)
[22:20] <ell> grad student. Just call me Lucy.

[22:20] <desc> <→<thomamelas> “That should be fine.”
[22:21] <desc> Eli taps the elevator button after consulting the directory.
[22:22] <desc> Okay, up we go, bing, doors open and we see?
[22:22] <jake2099> Okay. At close to noon, Harbour Centre is jumpin’. The elevators are packed with tourists, shoppers and businesspeople. http://www.emporis.com/images/show/304364-Large.jpg
[22:23] <jake2099> Not many people headed up to the eighth floor, though. When you arrive, there’s a pleasant hush. Someone has nice carpet and insulation.
[22:24] <desc> Eli is making small talk about amazon rankings and publishing dates amidst the crowd to get into the zone as people get on and off the elevator along the way.
[22:25] <desc> I presume there’s a receptionist or someone who is our first stop once we enter?
01[22:25] <thomamelas> Hangs back a little bit from the pair, quietly scanning the room.
01[22:26] <thomamelas> Casting mage sight just for paranoia’s sake.
[22:26] <jake2099> The firm seems to occupy one whole side of the floor, their area set apart by beveled glass paneling. There are people coming and going but it’s much more leisurely – a deliveryman with a hand truck, a guy with a stack of pizzas, and so forth. The reception area is big and lit by warm recessed lighting. A few people fidget in seats.

[22:26] <jake2099> A woman in her mid-forties looks up as you enter.
[22:27] <jake2099> Nothing out of the ordinary, Thom; to your Prime sight, the place is alive with electricity and transmissions. You can see the wiring glowing through the walls and the vast floods of data moving back and forth just at the edge of perception.
[22:28] <jake2099> “Ladies,” she smiles. “May I help you?”
[22:29] <desc> You never want to sell to a receptionist. You want to be pals with the receptionist. Elithora moves in with a warm, confident smile.
[22:29] <desc> “Hi,” Elithora opens, offering her hand for a polite shake. “I’m Doctor Conrad. I’m afraid I don’t have an appointment — I hope you aren’t too busy right now.”

[22:31] <jake2099> She looks a bit wary at first, but that dissolves quickly into a warmer smile. “Doctor? What of?”
[22:32] <desc> “I’m a history professor. You see, we’re working on a bit of a history book …”
[22:33] <desc> Elithora gives a concise elevator pitch without droning on. Key details: colorful twists of history, multiculturalism, “in the home stretch with the publisher,” second advance has cleared.
[22:33] <ell> Aurelia smiles and fidgets.
[22:34] <jake2099> The receptionist nods. “So what do you need our firm for? We don’t usually do media contracts….”
[22:35] <desc> “Ah, yes. What we need are some historical maps. Oh, you should see what we have reproduced so far. It’s going to look great on tablet. It so happens my colleague once worked with a Robin Haversham, over at Burnaby. Now I understand your firm represented Mr. Haversham’s estate.”
[22:35] <jake2099> She nods. “The name isn’t familiar to me, but go on.”
[22:38] <desc> “We’d like to see some of the maps that were entrusted to Lockwell, Accurso, Reubens and Reed to assess whether it might be possible to bid on them at present. So we thought we’d start by pestering you to see what the first step would be.”

[22:41] <jake2099> Her brow quirks. “Well, that’s not a question I can answer off the top of my head. Let me see if Mr. Reed is in.” She touches a button on her phone. “…Sir? We have some potential buyers on a ‘Haversham’ estate….no, I haven’t heard of it either. …A book company. All right.”
[22:41] <jake2099> She looks up. “Mister Reed has a few minutes. Down that hallway, second door on the right.”
[22:41] <jake2099> She presses a button and a glass door unlocks.
[22:44] <desc> Eli smiles and thanks the receptionist, leading the group down the hall. “Persuasive thoughts, persuasive thoughts,” she whispers, barely audible to her fellow mages.
[22:44] <ell> Aurelia follows Eli through
[22:44] <jake2099> The second door on the right has the name Daniel Reed, Jr. on it. Inside, a youngish man of maybe 30 or 32 is leaning back in a leather chair, one wingtipped foot on his desk, tapping on a laptop. He looks up as you enter.
01[22:44] <thomamelas> Follows the pair, smiling at the receptionist.
[22:45] <desc> “Hi, Mr. Reed? Dr. Conrad. These are my students. Sorry to interrupt, but we’re here on a bit of book business.”
[22:45] <jake2099> “Hi, take a seat, I’ll be right with you.” He taps a couple more times and then folds the laptop screen mostly down, setting it aside. He leans forward. “You were here about a…Flaverham estate?”
[22:46] <desc> “Ah, Haversham. A fellow historian, who passed in 1987. I understand your firm represented his estate and we’re looking for certain historical documents of his for publishing.”
[22:47] <desc> “We’re wondering what the protocol would be to take a look at some of these documents to assess if they’d be the proper fit for the book.”

We’ve been digitizing our records…still not done yet, but this one is…wow, this guy had a lot of weird-sounding stuff.”
01[22:55] <thomamelas> “He got a bit…ecentric towards the end.”

[22:56] <jake2099> “An orrery…? What’s an orrery? First edition books, landscape paintings….here we are. ‘Vintage map of Strait of Georgia, Vancouver, and environs, late 18th century.’ Does that sound right?”
[22:57] <desc> Eli smiles with seemingly nerdy delight. “Yes, precisely.”
01[22:57] <thomamelas> “It shows the position of the solar system.” Replying absently.

[22:59] <jake2099> “Lot number 87-220-12-C. There we are…I. I’m sorry. I can’t help you with this.” He leans back. “It was sold. Very quickly, in fact. It was the first item to go. The buyer specifically requested anonymity. I couldn’t give that information away without a court order. I’m sorry.”

[23:06] <jake2099> There’s a note appended to the comments section that Eschaton is one of Mr. Accurso’s special clients.
01[23:06] <thomamelas> Can I pull up any more information?
[23:07] <jake2099> Not without operating the computer, which he would notice. The data is on their server somewhere else, so without actually controlling the mouse or sending data through the modem, you’re left with what he actually has on the screen.

[23:19] <ell> Aurelia smiles. “It would be nice to have it for a plate. All we need is a photograph, after all.”
[23:19] <jake2099> It looks like a lot of their business with the firm is, in fact, estate purchases. There’s a big string of them, and Eschaton deposit a lot of money every month to keep the firm on retainer. There’s a note: REMEMBER, THESE GUYS GET FIRST PICK! – A.
[23:20] <jake2099> The firm also has negotiated some property deals on their behalf – zoning permissions and so forth – and there are records of those. The most recent was two years ago – a condominium at the Living Shangri-La downtown.
