The Festival of the Ascension Queen
Every year, in the town of Evermeet, a contest is held to find the most beautiful person in town. That person serves as a channel for the spirit of the Fetian and is generally referred to as either the Ascension King or Queen. Thus far, all three winners have been women (Razide, Daphine, and now Gleneese).
After three days of patying, feasing, and general frivolty (during which time the population of Evermeet quadruples), the new Ascension Queen is crowned and asked to go before Tyrexes to ask entrance, as the Fetian, into the Eastern Gate. Thus far, Tyrexes has always refused the request. After that ceremony, the Ascension Queen becomes the consort of the dragon is is responsible for acting as the town’s go between with the great and ancient wyrm.
It is generally understood that the Ascension Queen, as having a spiritual significance, is a sham. Clearly, the queen cannot be chaneling the Fetian or the door would have been opened long ago. Thus, the festival serves mostly as an excuse for a huge party and for picking someone to deal with the dragon, a job very few people would want without adequate and generous compensation.
