The reðivir are an enigmatic species of tiny, vaguely humanoid creatures with a strong resemblance to fish. They are a common sight around spaceports and other centers of high technology, scavenging discarded tech to repair (or at least juryrig) and sell to down-on-their-luck members of other species. They otherwise have little contact with outsiders, sticking to their own clans and rarely bothering to learn more than a few words in Galactic Standard.

The reðivir language has been likened to insects buzzing or a ripcord being pulled. As far as the scientific community can tell, no other sentients have been able to decode the language; despite this rumors persist of men who can speak to the reðivir. Most business with the species is done when a reðivir offers a passerby an item and holds up fingers to indicate the price, though occasionally they will offer money to another sentient for some easily indicated product or service.

The truly curious thing about them is that despite their inability to communicate with other species, they are quite widespread. The only planets free of reðivir are small colony worlds; everywhere else, every planet that sees enough space traffic to develop a permanent spaceport, hosts a warren of reðivir. From this it’s assumed that they stow away on ships like giant rats, but dralek records indicate reðivir were seen on no less than four planets even when no other sentients traveled the galaxy and the only way between stars was a dralek psi-vessel. This enigma has given rise to many rumors about the reðivir, with the three most common being: that they have the capability to build stealth starplanes (and have had this capability for upwards of seven thousand years, if the dralek records are true), that they are or have their own type of powerful psionics and Messengers different from the galactic norm among other species, or that they are actually larval forms of some kind of space-going creature like dragons or wraiths.
