The houses of the North have been good and bad, noble and treacherous, but some houses live under a dark and sinister cloud, and of them, few can compare to House Bolton. In ages past, the Boltons and the Starks were sworn enemies. Eventually, the Bolton host submitted to Stark rule, though it was a grudging surrender at best.
House Bolton gains its fearsome reputation from their ancient practice of skinning their enemies and wearing their hides as cloaks. Some Starks even met this fate before the Boltons finally bent their knees, and rumor suggests the Boltons still pursue this grisly practice in secret, even keeping a room in their castle where these hides are on display. The Dreadfort is a place of ill omen and dark legends, and some stories go so far as to claim the fearsome Night’s King was originally from House Bolton. Despite their fearsome reputation, the Bolton’s command a substantial number of House Stark’s banners and can contribute many trained soldiers and knights to any military force.
Roose Bolton is the current Lord of House Bolton.
