Chestworld 2: Aperture of Freedom

Session 5

March 31, 2012 19:38

When we last left our prodigious heroes, they had ventured into the dungeon that the forces of the evil Ulrich Von Cleavenstein had been excavating to try to find the Broken Book of the Feeble Gawd. Our party ventured into a room filled with kobold and goblin corpses, with three doors labeled “Storehouse,” “Chamber of Forgotten (or Unknown, depending how you translate it) History,” and “Guard House.” They went to the storehouse first, in the hopes of finding supplies that would help them with the rest of the dungeon. The storehouse was picked clean, but Setharian discovered a secret door. Dunstan tried to force it open, but was unable to break the lock. Setharian cast a grease spell on it, causing it to glow with the dwarven symbol for conjuration before sliding open, revealing a chamber with a detailed mural of several hooded figures, whose hands glow with eldritch magick, casting their spells upon a chest. Hidden throughout the mural are letters that spell out “We give thanks to the gawd of secrets, who sacrificed himself to end the war.” It also depicts a great battle between the races of the real world and the Eastern Orc League. Curiously, orcs are fighting on both sides, both for and against the Eastern Orc League.

At the end of the hallway with the mural stands a door in the shape of a lid of a chest. Our heroes were just about to open it when they were interrupted by a man in a black robe, carrying a spiked mace and a holy symbol of the gawd of death. He asked the characters what they were doing in the dungeon, adding that nobody was supposed to be around. He identified himself as a corpse-taker in the service of Ulrich Von Cleavenstein, tasked with taking their dead bodies back to Cleavenburg.

Upon hearing that he served the wretched Von Cleavenstein, Dunstan demanded the he surrender. Instead, he started casting a spell, but the valorous Dunstan charged and stabbed him in the gut, disrupting his spell. Setharian was able to cast a sleep spell upon him, causing him to pass out. Unfortunately, this released his control of the kobold zombies he had animated from the corpses in the lobby. The undead mob charged in ravenously. Setharian dragged the unconscious priest back into the mural room, away from the undead, while Dunstan bravely held off the undead and Rutherford hurled fireballs by the dozens.

The party defeated the zombies handily, and began to question the priest, a cowardly man named Faust. He explained that it’s his job to reanimate the corpses of the dead, and that he had lingered in the dungeon trying to find the Broken Book for himself. He said he had lied to his commanders and told them the book they found, which they believed was the Broken Book, was magical when it was in fact not. He seemed unaware of the destruction of his regiment by the Firefighters.

Our heroes were at a loss as to what to do with the man. Rutherford wanted him dead, while Setharian wanted to let him go as long as he swore never to serve Von Cleavenstein again. Dunstan was in favor of an impromptu trial (followed probably by a quick execution), but Setharian’s words swayed him. The group decided to make the man swear gawd oaths to serve us rather than Von Cleavenstein, and to use his knowledge to help them make their way through the dungeon. The session ended before the gawd oaths could be written up.

Session 4

March 17, 2012 18:44

When we left off, our callipygian heroes were engaged in a raging battle between the forces of the evil Ulrich Von Cleavenstein, themselves, and the Firefighters, a group of rebels from the conquered nation of Cordova and their massive red dragon while trying to steal the Broken Book of the Feeble Gawd.

The party slew many foes, but when the Firefighters began to prevail over the Von Cleavensteinians, the red dragon got too close for comfort, forcing them to retreat with bags of loot in hand. The group uncovered a number of items, including the warhammer Troll’s Headache. The group’s loot can be found here.

Unfortunately, the treasure also contained an unidentified Potion of Polymorph Into Insect. Vasra goaded Dunstan into drinking it, changing him into a red ant. After a hearty guffaw was had at our handsome hero’s expense, the group eventually decided to seek out a wizard who could dispel the potion’s effect. Placing him into a jar with a leaf, they set off.

They found a mage at the nearby town, who was able to break the spell, albeit for a handsome fee that Dunstan paid out of pocket. With the party re-formed, the group decided to set out for the dungeon that the Von Cleanvensteinians had been exploring in hopes that the Broken Book of the Feeble Gawd still lay within. A map the party had stolen during their raid on the camp suggested that the expedition had been having trouble finding the book, and no one was terribly eager to face off against the Firefighters and their red dragon again.

The group arrived at the dungeon three days later. Although they were wary of the horrors that no doubt lay within, they nonetheless went forth bravely. Find out the trials and tribulations they faced on April 7 when the game picks up again.

Session 3

January 07, 2012 20:27

When we left off, our intrepid adventurers in the basement of the Star’s Rest Inn. They decided they needed horses to catch up with the expeditionary force, and Sir Dunstin Silvermark went off to buy one with the money he got from Alastor, telling the others to get horses on their own but not to tell him what (presumably illegal) means they used to get them. He ended up agreeing to pay 65 gold pieces for a riding horse and to endorse the stable he bought her from. He named her Octorina.

Setharian chose to preach to the masses the wisdom of his gawd Thrain to attempt to gather donations. He was doing pretty well until a woman came by who recognized him from the gladiator pits, but Vasra was able to befuddle her out of accusing him of being an escapee by telling her Setharian was the infamous “horse rapist of Star’s Fall.”

Rutherford Heathcliff was able to sweet talk his way into a relatively cheap horse by insinuating that the stable owner was of noble birth.

We rode out and two days later arrived at a campsite that was in the midst of being burned to the ground by a massive red dragon. The group, at the urging of Vasra (who is convinced that all lizards are his friends), elected to charge into the camp while it was under attack and attempt to steal the book from amidst the chaos.

Session 2

January 07, 2012 20:21

More arena fights, sprung from the gladiator pits by Alastor and sent on a quest to steal the Broken Book of the Feeble Gawd from Ulrich Von Cleavenstein, who is now a badass warrior-lich and still apparently has the Hand and Eye of Vecna. We left off with the PCs in the basement of the Star’s Rest Inn, lacking horses or provisions but needing to catch up with an expeditionary force 2 day’s horse ride away before they can bring the book back to Von Cleavenstein.

Welcome to your Adventure Log!

October 27, 2011 00:33

Every campaign gets an Adventure Log, a blog for your adventures!

While the wiki is great for organizing your campaign world, it’s not the best way to chronicle your adventures. For that purpose, you need a blog!

The Adventure Log will allow you to chronologically order the happenings of your campaign. It serves as the record of what has passed. After each gaming session, come to the Adventure Log and write up what happened. In time, it will grow into a great story!

Best of all, each Adventure Log post is also a wiki page! You can link back and forth with your wiki, characters, and so forth as you wish.

One final tip: Before you jump in and try to write up the entire history for your campaign, take a deep breath. Rather than spending days writing and getting exhausted, I would suggest writing a quick “Story So Far” with only a summary. Then, get back to gaming! Grow your Adventure Log over time, rather than all at once.
