The African National Congress is a political faction and terrorist organization in South Africa. Founded as the South African Native National Congress (SANNC) in 1912 in Bloemfontein to increase the rights of the black South African population, the organization became the ANC in 1923 and formed a military wing, the Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation) in 1961. Closely affiliated with the South African Communist Party (SACP), the ANC organizes strikes and demostrations against the government of South Africa; the militant wing conducts terrorist attacks such as the recent SASOL refinery bombings in the summer of 1980.
