Following the failed ambush set by members of the Lost Ones, the party had been able to discern that Modra was still causing problems — namely that he was not only behind the assault on Bordrin’s Watch, but that he was also responsible for putting the hit out on the party, ostensibly to retrieve a key that the party had located in the Nexus. The party’s investigation resulted in the discovery that Modra had been seen frequently at the Happy Beggar Tavern, and so the party headed out to investigate the tavern.

Once at the Happy Beggar, Ghavar was able to sneak downstairs where he discovered a hastily concealed cellar. This cellar opened up to a tunnel that appeared to have collapsed, making passage impossible. However, upon close inspection, Ghavar was able to locate some small humanoid footprints as well as a lever for the concealed door contained within the rubble. Opening the door revealed that the tunnel wound on for several dozen feet before opening up into a larger, natural cavern. Ghavar returned to his companions in the common room and the party made plans to return when the Happy Beggar was busier.

The party returned that evening while the tavern was at its busiest. Sven distracted Ausma, the co-proprietor and barkeep, allowing the rest of the party to travel downstairs undetected. Only Gundren remained behind to guard the stairs and keep an eye out for any trouble entering the Beggar. The party crept through the tunnel behind the cellar and entered the cavern beyond. This cavern was home to four giant bats as well as some dangerous fungus known as doomspore. The bats swooped down at the party in an attempt to make hit and run attacks with their tails. The party; however, very quickly was able to pull the bats close to the ground through the attacks of Sven, Thea, and Lara. Once pulled to the ground, the party had little trouble with the bats and dispatched them with ease.

After a quick rest, the party ventured deeper into the cavern complex where they came across a small room carved out of the natural stone that featured an active portal in the center of the room. Also in the room; however, were a shadar-kai, three dark creepers and a pair of shadow hounds. It appeared as though the dark creepers, under the direction of the shadar-kai were preparing to move the hounds through the portal in their cage; however, when they noticed the party they attacked. The fight began well for the party as Lara was able to engage the Shadar Kai and keep most of her more powerful attacks in check. Similarly, the rest of the party started to wear down the dark creepers, killing two, while also dealing powerful blows to the shadow hounds, despite the hounds’ ability to teleport around the room.

Trouble came though when the shadar kai witch tried to run into the next room. Ghavar followed her to stop her from gathering reinforcements and was able to catch her right away. Unfortunately, Modra was also hiding in the next room. In addition to Modra, this room also featured two active portals. When Ghavar caught up to the witch, he was able to slay her, but was engaged by Modra in the process. Modra then uttered some sort of ritual or command and called forth 6 wraiths to aid him. The wraiths exited from the portal in the center of the room and attacked the monk. Ghavar fell to the combined attacks of the wraiths as Oda and Lara charged in to rescue him. Oda was soon knocked unconscious as well and the rest of the party was soon overwhelmed. Lara was able to retreat through the portal in the first room and found herself in a warehouse in an unknown location, but Thea and Sven were struck down and soon died along with Ghavar. As Oda was laying unconscious and clinging to the last strands of life, his body reached down into a hidden reserve and he found the inner strength to get back up and crawl through one of the portals in the second room, also finding himself in another warehouse different from the one Lara was found in.

At the end of the day the party was broken and scattered. Gundren was still in the Happy Beggar while Lara and Oda had teleported into warehouses, their locations not yet certain. The remainder of the party had fallen to the attacks of the wraiths.
