Matthew Soundtrack
Theme Song: Send Me Out – Steve Fee
There isn’t an official video or anything, and the lyrics pretty much speak for themselves:
Lyric snippets to note:
Jesus lord of my salvation savior of my soul.
Send me out to the world to make you known…
I mean, this is Matthew. He out on the streets of gangland Dallas to do some good in the world – in the name of Jesus.
…I wanna run to the ones in need in the name of jesus.
I wanna give my life away all for your kingdom’s sake.
Shine a light in the darkest place in the name of jesus…
High Concept, anyone?
…And to the ones in need of rescue lead me i will go…
This gets more into his recent activities – a more direct version of helping out
Theme/Inspiration: A Mighty Fortress is Our God – Martin Luther
No soundtrack of a good Lutheran preacher is complete without the Battle Hymn of the Reformation, but Matthew prefers a comtemporary sound:
Lyric snippets to note:
A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
A strong testament of faith, and although the hymn targets Satan, the references to “craft” and “power” could apply to most of the foes faced in the Dresdenverse. Fortress imagery like this also provides Matthew’s affinity for defensive spells.
And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.
And yet more lyrics that apply just as well in the Dresdenverse – “this world, with devils filled”
Inspiration: Lead Us On – Kristian Stanfill
Again, no official video or anything:
Lyric snippets to note:
We are believing there is more that we’ve not seen…
It’s about faith… but that’s a pretty Dresden-esque statement too.
Cast the noise away
Find a quiet space
Listen closely now
Clear our crowded days
When you speak to us
We’ll be ready
This hearkens back to Matthew’s experience at the little mid-cities chapel
Inspiration: Hope of the Broken World – Selah
Lyric snippets to note:
Yeah, I can’t narrow this one down – the whole song is filled with Biblical and spiritual light imagery, and the title is even thematic to Dresden – I guess it (or some variation) could be Matthew’s version of Conor’s “Big Damn Hero” aspect.
Aspect: White and Nerdy – Weird Al Yankovic
Hopefully you figured out this was for “White Bread, Street Cred.” :) I originally wanted this gem from Office Space, but it doesn’t meet our PG-13 rating. LANGUAGE WARNING IF YOU FOLLOW THIS LINK!
Aspect: Hedwig’s Theme – Harry Potter soundtrack
For “Student of the Supernatural.” I’ve personally loved this theme, since the first movie came out. It manages to convey a sense of wonder at the magical world, while maintaining an undertone of veiled threat. Perfect for Dresden.
Stuff I’m finding that seems to fit the evolution of Matthew. I’ll go more in-depth to see how/if it fits later, but wanted to capture them here:
