Winds of Fortune 02

Inside the party there was mingling. Mjolnir learned the symbol the band uses was chosen more or less at random.

After some more mingling, David Patten made an appearance, shaking hands and hobnobbing with the rich and famous. He worked his way to Feather, who managed to mention how lucky he was to find two bands in two weeks to sign to record contracts. Patten made an uncomfortable withdrawal and returned trailing a bodyguard.

Mage Sights went up. Feather noticed that David Patten seemed to have no bad Fate around him at all, and the threads of good fortune swirling around him seemed to emanate from his pocket. Bran noticed that he was a Sleepwalker and that whatever was affecting him was not Awakened magic.

It was decided that Lok would tail Patten and find out what he could about him. He stayed up late, slept late, spent most of his time in clubs, and recently survived a bad car accident when a drunk driver slammed into his car. Rather lucky, it was said of him. The timing of the accident coincided with Elliot Patten’s slip down the stairs.

They discussed many motives for David’s behavior. When Feather mentioned that they didn’t know if David knew what he was doing or whether he was even harming anyone, Dramson remembered Elliot Patten’s run of bad luck and told the group. Then they made plans.

They watched David leave his large suburban house and relayed his clothes to Lok, who dressed similarly. At Club Murmur, with the music blaring, the target had his own booth with three bodyguards around it. Dramson used Imposter to make David believe he was Elliot and needed to talk to him. As he took him to the side, away from teh bodyguards for a moment, Feather found two women who were upset with each other over something and cast Emotional Urging to get them to cause a distraction as they shrieked at each other almost fighting. Lok used Two Faces and became David Patten, moving back quickly and motioning the bodyguards to follow him out of the club.

While Dramson was trying to talk to David, Bran moved by David and Decayed his pocket, stooping down to pick up a handful of the pocket’s contents before David could react. Dramson and Feather both moved themselves to slow David down in his pursuit of Bran. Recognizing Feather, he spun to call for his bodyguards and saw them following himself out of the club. It seemed to hit him all at once that he had been taken and it was over. He slumped into a chair.

Outside, just before Lok got into the limo, he patted his pockets as if he forgot something, told the guards to wait for a moment and went back into the club, immediately dropping the disguise. Mjolnir, who had been shadowing Lok in case the security caught on to the deception, was waiting, and they both walked back out and wandered away. Bran also made it outside and made his way back to the Sanctum.

Dramson tried to drive home the guilt David should be feeling, but David obviously holds Elliot in contempt and believes he deserves the bad luck David had set on him.

We left the cabal trying to decide exactly what to do with the coin, and how to find out more about it.

Jim wasn’t trying to drive home any guilt; he realized that David didn’t care about his brother. Jim was trying to use the guilt he was inducing in David as a lever to get him to spill about the coin.
