“Fools! You are all fools! I am so close in my research to making Paradox disappear forever. No more Abyss to stop us helping the Oracles, or the Sleepers. I may even be able to get Sleepers to Awaken! Can’t you see I should be allowed to continue? It is for the benefit of us all!”

—excerpted from the transcripts of the trial of Maximillian

Maximillian was a well-respected mage at one time. His cabal, the Athletics, had recovered an Artifact, put down a rampaging spirit, and mentored several up-and-coming mages in the region. A disastrous expedition to a suspected Atlantean ruin changed all that. Maximillian was the only member of the A’s to return.

Outwardly, he said and did the right things at the right times. He grieved appropriately, worked his way back to helping the Consilium, even took an apprentice. Despite not having a cabal, the Consilium decided to let him remain a Councilor.

But on the inside, what turned into a terrible series of events too hold. It was Paradox that did in the A’s, and Maximillian had decided to find a way to get rid of it forever. He looked for all the current research on Paradox, but only rarely from within his own region. The theory he decided to pursue was his downfall—that Sleepers carry a shard of the Abyss inside them.

It didn’t take long for Maximillian to exhaust current research on the subject. His early experiments without involving Sleepers yielded little information. Frustrated in finding the answers he needed, he decided one little experiment on one Sleeper no one would miss couldn’t hurt.

One experiment led to another, then another. Soon, Maximillian was taking Sleeper souls out and experimenting on them, twisting them and wringing them, trying to cut pieces off. The more he was denied answers, the worse his experiments became.

As his hubris rose, his crimes got sloppier. Whether he thought himself untouchable or he no longer cared will never be known. The Four Seasons cabal finally found out what he was doing and caught him.

Maximillian was tried, convicted, and destroyed utterly. Every officer in the Consilium stepped down, some in shame that they had missed it for so long, others in disgust that one under their care would do such a thing. Every one of them left the region.

Out of the chaos and upheaval, most of a new Consilium was chosen. There are a few positions left open. The Consilium managed to wrangle out a new Charter, and it will be formally dedicated in just about a week.
