The Assassination of the Royal Family and Incrimination of the Lieutenants

There are eight quick cuts that show the Lieutenants returning to Dunwall and dropping luggage off in their rooms. They are then seen being summoned into the Royal Court. We see the eight of them assemble on the steps to the throne and kneel before their Emperor, Empress, and Princess Heir. They rise and begin to give their reports. Each one reports no plague like the one they are experiencing in Dunwall and no knowledge of a cure. The Emperor grows more forlorn with every bit of news and the Empress turns away in sorrow towards the end.

Suddenly there is a flash of light that fills the room and sends the assembly reeling. Before their eyes clear a gunshot rings out and there is a scream from the line of Lieutenants. They scramble to their feet and can barley make out three masked men standing behind each of the Royal seats. Blood pours from the necks of the Imperial Family and one of the men has the Emperor’s hand in his, pistol pointed down the stairs at the Lieutenants. Another shot rings out and the bullet lands mere inches from the feet of the Lieutenant of Faith.

The Lieutenants draw their swords and charge up the steps to the Throne when there is another blinding flash of light. Then the heavy wooden doors to the Court burst open and we see Haytham Kenway, Hiram Burrows, and a score of guardsmen come flooding into the room. Hiram calls out, “The Lieutenants killed the Family! Look, the Emperor managed to shoot the Lieutenant of Illumination before the attack! It’s a coup! Guards! Arrest them all!” Haytham draws his sword and takes a step forward as the Lieutenants tense and the screen fades out.

Six Months Later and the Lieutenants inside Coldridge Prison

White text fills the middle of the screen, “Six Months Later” and the show fades in Lieutenant Marquist strapped to a chair. In front of her stand three men, Warden Lyle Bolton, Lord Regnant Hiram Burrows, and Royal Interrogator Morris Sullivan. The Lord Reagent has his back to Marquist while the Warden stands slightly to one side. The Interrogator holds a red hot iron near her face, close enough to evaporate the sweet from her brow. Burrows is speaking, “Just admit to the assassination of the Royal Family and we’ll see you’re trial and punishment are swift and painless. We may even spare your fellow Lieutenants… if they cooperate.”

In response Marquist spits blood towards Burrows, but her head restraints turn the defiant gesture into meager insult as the blood splatters onto the floor. “Never”, she croaks. As Burrows tsks, Bolton steps closer “You aren’t strong enough to endure Morris here. If you won’t give the Lord Regnant his confession, then give us another name. Corroborate on the guilt of another Lieutenant. How many more days of this do you think you have in you, Elena?” Elena looks into Kenway’s eyes, smiles, and closes her eyes.

“She’s passed out.” Bolton reports.
Morris grunts in disagreement but Burrows is barely paying attention, “Fine, fine. Take her back to her cell. Isolate her from the others though, she may know this prison better than the rest.”
Morris grunts angrily again, “Quiet Sullivan!”, Burrows barks, “I have no patience for your simple-mindedness.”
Burrows and Bolton walk out of the room as Morris moves to undo Elena’s shackles. Her right hand is barely freed as the door clicks shut and her eyes click open…

Elena will have a chance to make a series of combat tests against Morris Sullivan to break free.
It’s assumed she’ll have Initiative, and be the Attacker on the first round. After she breaks free, ask the player what the plan is. Let her search the room, though there isn’t much here beyond the chair and a lit brazier to keep the iron poker hot. A little bit after the fight the door will open, or if she tries to leave, or whatever, and Lyle Bolton will walk back in. Then read the next block of text.

The door opens and Warden Bolton steps back into the room. He holds a hand, palm out, at first as he pulls the door back closed behind him. From his pocket he pulls a single key from a ring and offers it to Elena. Then he whispers,“Quickly now, we haven’t much time. I know you didn’t kill the family and I want to help. This is the master key for Block C and should work for most cells in Block A. Obviously, it’s not going to do you much good but take it and try to get it to your allies. I’ll arrange for you to have yard time in the next few days. Don’t be caught with it, or else they’ll know I helped you. I wish I could do more for you, but this is all I can offer for now.” The Warden tosses the key to Elena, steps back and pulls out a pistol. He points the gun at Elena and loudly announces, “Now now, Ms. Marquist. We’ll have no more of this. I’ll see to poor Mister Sullivan once I see you safely back to your cell. Come with me.” And the scene fades out.

The show fades back in and across the bottom of the screen text reads, “Three days later…” and we see Elena Marquist being escorted through the halls of Coldridge. The guard reach the main courtyard and unshackles Elena’s hands and feet. Quickly, another guard runs over. “What’s this then?”, he asks.
“Warden’s given the inmate here a chance to walk the yard. Says seeing a reminder of freedom will help break her.”
“We have Block C already out here! This won’t do!”

Then from another nearby doorway a guard emerges escorting Alexander Worthington, the yard officer looks over for a moment, “What’s this then? We can’t have inmates from Block A out here!”
“Relax, Felton. I have the Device with him. Warden himself cleared this. Something about trying to break Worthington here with freedom.”

At that moment yet another door opens and Archibalt Merriweather Fonteroy III comes strutting out, followed shortly by another guard. Officer Felton looks over and an even large look of exasperation crosses his face, “Oh no. There is no way we’re to let all the Lieutenants in the yard at the same time!”
“Felton, you know that Block D is allowed yard time whenever they request it. Archibalt here asked, I didn’t know…”
“Well, I’m going to have to fetch the Warden for this. This can’t be good. Just lock them all up, separately, and I’ll see to getting this sorted out.”
Officer Felton begins jogging towards the Warden’s office while the Lieutenants are escorted to various posts around the yard.

It’s Block C’s yard time, so Griswald Ferrenday, Nikolai Barovich, and Klaus Asundor have free reign to move about the yard. Currently Elena Marquist is being held on the North side of the yard, Alexander Worthington on the South side, and Archibalt Merriweather Fonteroy III is being kept on the East side. Both Elena and Alexander are chained to standing posts on the far side of the yard while their assigned guards stand waving off any inmates the venture too close. Mike is the Lead Player for this section, as the prison falls under the Ministry of Judgement.

At some point a man will approach either Griswald in the yard. His name is David Hobbs and he’s a point man for the Fifth Street Hangmen. Hobbs tells him that he knows they are innocent and if they can get into the sewers under the prison he has some gear stashed down there. Hobbs tells him a combination to an old safe that uses for dead drops and they are welcome to the guns and money inside if they should ever escape.
