- Session 7 -
Hey everybody! Well, looks like this will probably be the last session of this campaign for awhile.
Twenty years ago…
Sovelaar distracts the guards and leads them away from the cave. The rest of the group approaches right when Sir Keegan is about to restrain Fen. It is still unknown as to why Keegan is questioning Fen’s presence here but Fen appears to be very nervous. Suddenly Fen reaches into his pouch and throws a dark orb at Sir Keegan. It is an oily looking substance that quickly entangles and covers the entire surface of Keegan’s body. The dragonborn falls limply to the ground, his body lays there unmoving. Fen sees that the heroes have arrived and at this point is sweating and frantic. He rushes them into the central chamber of the sewers system. He leads them to a trapdoor hidden behind a waterfall that seems to gush from the rough rock wall. The heroes drop into the trapdoor and he says “don’t worry about the border guards. I’ll think of something. Find Fulglorn!”
The heroes dropped into a dark tunnel. They are in the upperdark, a subterranean cavern system of tunnels, deep pits, and danger. They navigate there way by following the compass as Fen explained. It takes them over a day before they reach there destination after surviving attacks by flying manta like creatures, surviving cave ins, crumbling floors, and avoiding other nast critters of the dark.
They reach a fluorescent tunnel, lit up by glowing giant toadstools. Voices are heard nearby and Olivia sets off to investigate.
She discovers border guards and goblinoids farming mushrooms, seemingly entranced and definitely malnourished. They are being ordered around by a short stocky humanoid with greyish blue skin and ghost white hair. Before she can tell her companions she steps on a patch of reddish mushrooms with orange spots and a cloud bursts. This alerts the strange short creature who sends his slaves to investigate. The battle is over before it really begins as the heroes rush in at full force and the overseer finds his end. There was a survivor, well actually a few but only one of them was dragonborn, the goblinoids were ruthlessly slaughtered by Jakir.
When the overseer died the slaves stood there for a few before sitting down. Anaethestra was set on trying to heal the border guard but the others wanted to move on. “We have to think about the mission.” Anaethestra stayed behind while the rest of the party ventured forth. As the tunnel drastically widened into a large cavern the heroes could here a waterfall nearby.
They found themselves at the edge of a cliff, a bridge spanned the waterfall which poured over a hundred feet into a large lake. From up here they could get a good view of the whole cavern. The cavern was well lit enough by the glowing toadstools of varying colors and shades to make out dozens more of those short humanoids overseeing even more slaves. Stalagtites and stalagmites looked like miniature mountains and across the way to the northeast was the tunnel that led back up to the surface and onto the otherside of the Cairnsgorn. There was a mostly abandoned looking town, with the south eastern section flooded in stagnant water. A river flowing from the lake split the cave in two separating the flooded section from the rest of the town. A dome shaped darkness over a hundred feet in diameter ominously sat over the river, not interrupting the flow of the water.
But before they could proceed Olivia went back for Anaethestra. When the two returned with the border guard in tow the party was nearly split over differences of what to do with the borderguard. It looked grim for awhile but the argument ended with a decisive spear through the borderguards abdomen. Tension filled the air as a patrol approached. Quick thinking distracted the patrol leading them deeper into the tunnels back where the heroes came from. The party quickly made there way across the cavern using there invisibility cloaks to remain undetected. They passed by many borderguard and goblinoid slaves, delita and baldizaar recognized more than a few of the border guards as part of the nearly wiped out Ketos clan. They even spotted Sir Keegans son. The northern tunnel was in sight, just up a hill. To the east of the hill was a pit filled with hundreds of corpses. Most of the dead in the pit were obviously of the same species as the short overseers. Above the pit further to the east they could see that the majority of the overseers were using the slaves to mine a tunnel.
The heroes thought it was in there best interest to focus on the mission and proceeded up the hill towards the northeast tunnel. It wasn’t until they reached the top of the hill that they noticed the compass that was magically linked to point towards fulglorn’s location at all times was not pointing towards the northeast tunnel. The compass arrow was now pointing towards the pit at the bottom of the hill.
