Sans Farine: This is the working name of the High Executioner of France, Michel Baptiste. The guillotine has renovated his profession, and he has deftly turned his bipartisanship to his favor in making himself THE neutral power in France. His name derives from his past, when during one of the more bloody revolutions, he would collect the heads of dozens of traitors in empty sacks from his families’ bakery. ‘Without Flour’ is a dour, cold man, and no one can safely call him friend or ally.
L’Eminence Rouge: ‘His Red Eminence’ is none other than High Cardinate Armand Jean Richeilieu. The power of the church firmly rests in the hands of the High Cardinate, who himself hails as the renounced heir to the Richeilieu noble family. Armand has renounced his claim to his family’s land and titles and has instead seized power of a more historical and spiritual nature. He has also become a high adviser to the King himself, and most look to Richeilieu as a king-in-waiting, or first minister. Fortunately, most say the Cardinate’s robes are crimson and NOT the green of envy. But what does anyone really know about a royal.
La Blaireau Grise: The old ‘grey badger’ of Deau Vere, Cavalier-General Alexandre Maginot has lived a life of war. From the old-blooded Maginots of Calais and Lyon, The Grey Badger is the French commander-in-war against the British, and it is his pennon that flies from the ramparts of the chief castle in Deau Vere. He has been instrumental in the founding of the castle-city and has played the war to a bloody stalemate on the landscape of west France. Both hailed as a hero and mocked as a fool, Maginot is faced with the impossible task of defeating the inhuman British in the game of war. A knight in good standing, and a man who has honed his life on the battlements and in the field, Maginot is aging quickly now, and the court is perhaps less than confident in him, decades into his tenure. He, for his part, has grown sullen and surly, who knows what his men feel about him now.
Le Chevalier Fou: Johan Catroux was once a hedge knight. With the war waging, the French need heroes and these come from all walks of life. Catroux was a shoemaker’s second son, who answered the call of war and served admirably under Maginot and Chartemps in the earliest fighting. Over time he was attached to old Duke Artemis, and achieve renown through his daring and fearlessness, saving “gallons of noble blood” In time he was raised to the lowest rank of Chevalier and flowered. He currently is something of a rogue general now, 10 years later. He strongly disagrees with the policies of the Grey Badger, and operates on his own, conducting raids and offensives against Fellkirk whenever he spies an opportunity. Officially the crown is silent on the ‘Mad Knight’, as he not only has the hearts and minds of the commoners, but he seems to be achieving what other strategists think impossible: He is bleeding Britain.
