The standard rules for damage against NPCs and monsters is that the player decides whether the damage is lethal prior to rolling for damage.
For this campaign, the rule is modified as follows:
- All damage against NPCs and monsters is assumed to be lethal by default.
- Players may decide at any point during combat to assign non-lethal damage to a particular opponent going forward, but only prior to rolling an attack.
- Once an opponent is the target of non-lethal damage, all damage is assumed to be non-lethal unless the players explicitly declare that they are switching back to lethal damage.
Any gray areas or exceptions to the above rules shall be handled on a case-by-case basis.
