The session started with the all the characters receiving a sealed letter from the estate of Master Sung from the kingdom of Pa-Mai. The letter announced that the character was the recipient of an inheritance from the now deceased Master Song Tonli. To claim the inheritance, the character must travel to a specific estate in the city of Minli in Pa-Mai and present the letter. The first three characters to arrive at the estate were: Saeren Collville, a human scholar from Londranis; Tavish Miller, a dwarven soldier from the Bearded Kingdom of Isceald; and Cailean Frizell, a gnome tinker/alchemist also from Isceald. Later, they were joined by Capt. Sophie Milonis, a halfling ship captain from Daggorland and Natalie Swift, a human prophet of Junon Ra from Londranis. The remaining characters that did not make it to the game session (Dene, Jack and Kelsie) are assumed to have made it to the estate while the others were out on the current adventure.
Each of the visitors were greeted at the estate by Master Sung’s chief servant Tong Chi and invited in. After being presented with lavish accommodations and meals, it was explained that immediately following the great war against Tannis the Mad, there was a treaty signed called the Treaty of Glint that publicly did several things, chiefly it outlawed worship of evil deities and the practice/study of necromancy anywhere within the five kingdoms. It was further explained that there was a secret portion of the Treaty of Glint as well. In that part of the treaty, a secret order was established known as the Order of Glint. The initial members and leaders of the Order were the surviving nine heroes that stood against and slew Tannis the Mad. They were Sung Tonli, Walter Collville, Maryanne Brewer, Rory Miller, Argyle Frizell, Akil Milonis, Aeon Gavril, Kong Zheng Ming and Daniel Stewart. The purpose of the Order of Glint was to:
Without regard to Race, Nationality, Gender, Wealth or Social Status,
- Find and eliminate all remaining followers of Tannis the Mad
- Find and eliminate all worshipers of evil powers
- Find and eliminate all person practicing or studying necromancy
- Find and eliminate all writings or effigies dealing with evil powers
The Order of Glint designed a gold coin (1 gp value), later named a Glint, as their symbol. For years the Order secretly cleaned up the Five Kingdoms, killing poor and wealthy, peasant and nobles… any who dared to seek the dark powers. A Glint coin was always left at the sights of the Order’s missions as a warning to all who longed for evil power. After about twelve years, the Order mostly disbanded due to “lack of viable missions”. Only a few remained active as watcher and researchers. It has remained this way for the last 48 years.
Master Sung was the last of the original nine to pass away and decided to give the descendants of the founders a chance to keep the order alive. Each of the characters has that option. Membership comes with a price however, a lifelong magical promise to keep the knowledge of the order secret and to further its purpose as much as possible. Failure to keep this promise will result in the character’s death. Once a descendant from each of the nine founding members is created as a character, the upper leadership ranks are full. Any new characters after that will be second-tier leaders.
The Order has two estates, the main estate in Minli, Pa-Mai and a smaller estate in the town of Glint on the eastern shore. Each estate is managed by a caretaker and there is enough money set aside to keep the estates up and running, complete with servants. Each estate contains a Library, Spell Research Lab, Armory, Sparring/practice Arena and living quarters. Each estate is stocked with items for use by the members as the leaders of the Order decide. Currently, no grand leader has been decided upon.
While at the Pa-Mai estate, the characters (those playing) receive a message from Abraham, one of the Order’s spies, saying that the Village of Nihei, about three days away, is having troubles with undead. The characters decide to ride out to the village and investigate under the ruse of a hunting trip.
On the three day trip, they encountered husband and wife elves that were fleeing Nihei to get away from the curse. The woman was pregnant and ended up giving birth in camp. Natalie and Saeren assisted in the birth. The characters learned a bit of Pa-Mai culture, that in the last third of pregnancy it is a bad luck for the mother to be around (within sight) of war or implements of war.
At the outer edge of the village, the party started seeing fields that were diseased and dying along with burned down huts. They tried to speak to a villager, but were just warned to hurry to the inn and get inside before it gets too dark. They arrived at the inn and were told to stable their horses in the barn across the road and to hurry inside. When the innkeeper opened the door, three armed men were ready to attack anything that entered with the characters – nothing did. The innkeeper is Master Foo who is also the Village Elder. The characters paid for the two common rooms and were told that the doors and windows were to remain closed until dawn regardless of what happened outside. The character kept watch in their rooms for an uneventful night.
The next day, it was explained that the village was cursed with the walking dead attacking at night 1-2 times a week. They killed a few people in the first couple of attacks and since everyone started boarding up in their homes at night, took to attacking key structures like the bridge and the mill. During the day, the villagers are trying to complete a crude wooden wall around the village, but they are currently only halfway done. The Mill is completely walled in now though. When asked why they think they are cursed, they believe it is due to an argument the villagers had over what to do with the previous priest’s belongings when he died last winter. The priest was a cleric of Apsu, the Waybringer, and his body is buried in a tomb near the Shrine of Apsu in the center of the village.
The characters went to investigate the attack on the Mill that occurred three days before. After being told by the mill workers to leave the village, else they will be cursed too. Capt. Sophie noticed some tracks of shambling footsteps – possibly zombies. Following the tracks towards their origin, they happen upon two elven hunters, a male and female, who seemed to be looking at the tracks as well. When Tavish started loading his heavy crossbow, the elves began yelling, “Whoa, whoa, whoever you are, don’t shoot! We are hunters.”
At this point, Frizell noticed that the elves appeared to actually be hiding or destroying the tracks, but he didn’t say anything just yet. After a polite conversation, the elves departed, leaving the characters to themselves. Being a bit paranoid, Frizell sent out Dimble, his pet weasel (a familiar), to see if the elves really left. While Dimble was looking around, it was attacked by a large wolf and nearly died. Frizell panicked and all the ensuing yelling and commotion must have ran the wolf off, because they found the wounded weasel soon after.
Walking back to town, they saw recent horse tracks heading north from town. Since it was getting later in the afternoon, they thought it was a bit unusual, so they decided to follow the tracks. Near dusk, they caught up with the rider of a mule. An elven woman was preparing a ritual in a rocky flat place in the forest. As Capt. Sophie and Frizell slowly snuck down the hill to get a closer look, the she-elf was joined by 6 kobolds that didn’t seem too happy to be there. The kobolds took their places for the ritual and she summoned an Imp. Frizell asked Capt. Sophie if she could see if the others were catching up and the captain, who doesn’t see in the dark, replied “The darkness is upon us” (meaning that it was too dark for her to see). Frizell didn’t know what that meant, panicked and shots his light crossbow at the Imp. Combat ensued! In the end, all the kobolds, the Imp and the She-Elf were dead. They took the elf’s body back to the village and made camp in the corral next to the barn.
The next morning, Master Foo identified the she-elf as Hou Wrang. As they were explaining to Master Foo what happened, the two elven hunters approached exclaiming that it was all a lie, that the characters had tracked down Hou Wrang and killed her in cold blood. Master Foo decided to have a village council meeting to see who was lying. Master Foo showed up at the council meeting with an odd looking brazier and lit it. The golden colored smoke billowed out and hugged the ground out to a 15’ radius. When asked about it, he just said, “It is special.” When the elven rangers saw the smoking brazier, they turned around and left and ran out of town rather than endure the council meeting.
Master Foo, realized what happened and offered the characters 25 gp each (all the village could afford) to track down the rangers and bring them back, dead or alive. The party gathered their things and set out after the misguided rangers. By the way, it is quite difficult for one ranger to track another ranger. After a while, on a game trail along the bank of the river, the characters were attacked by three Assassin Vines. The combat was fierce and on more than one occasion, characters would have died if not for the healing powers of Prophet Natalie. At the end of the fight, the characters needed to rest up before they encountered anything else. They found where the rangers had crossed the river and crossed themselves, then made camp.
The next day they followed the rangers higher into the foothills, following the river. Then they camped again. That night, while Tavish was on watch, two worg wolves surprise attacked him and startled the others away. The worgs were ferocious and most damage healed almost instantly. It was soon apparent that these were not worgs, they were werewolves. The battle was long and the tides turned back and forth several time. But the valiant Order of Glint won out in the end. Or did they? Tavish, Capt. Sophie and Saeren were bit by the cursed beast in the fight. And to make things worse, the full moon is less than 24 hours away. Next session, we will pick it up there as they search the possessions the werewolf rangers who magically changed back to the elves when they died.
