Earl of Tower Island

Lord: His Lord Reginald Umbrey, Earl of Tower Island, Defender of the Island Marches, Master at Sea

Information: Arthur Umbrey was knighted during the last rebellion. During The Battle of the Turncloaks the young knight saved Lord Erick’s life and was granted The Earldom of Tower Island, an island that at the time was distinguished mostly by the tower that dominated the center of the island. The tower was originally made to defend the coast against raids, but as the years went by without attack it was eventually sealed up and abandoned. Arthur used his small wealth to build a castle within the only town on the island, Towerton.

During the War Lord Arthur agreed to marry his young daughter to Lord Thomas Bullwick, Earl of Lighthouse Island. After the war, when Lord Umbrey arrived on Lighthouse Island with his daughter they were turned away. After this insult the two houses have come close to blows more than once, but peace has generally prevailed due to the firm hand of the Duke of Ibis.

In the war’s last battle Lord Arthur was wounded saving Lord Erick’s life and as a result was given a seat on the Duke’s privy council. However, the wound apparently led to madness, for Arthur began to spend most of his time in the newly completed castle at Towerton going over his family’s holdings. As a result of his attention the family became fairly prosperous for an Earldom, but suffered in military strength.

Shortly before the Indus Rebellion Lord Arthur passed and his son, Reginald, took control of the island. His first task was to gather his arms and join his house against the Indus Rebel lords. He earned distinction during the war and personally subjugated several lords for the royalists. He was given control of the fleet being used to control the Indus River by the Lord High Admiral Erick Gray and proved so adept that he was granted the title of Master at Sea, which is second in command of the King’s fleet.

After the war several Counties were gifted to Lord Reginald, who passed them out to favored nobles to form the bannermen of House Umbrey. Under the new Earl the family has strengthened its military situation greatly, more than tripling the amount of men that could be raised and paying to have a small trained army that could act as a core in any war. He is also responsible for the building of five ships to form a small navy. With this protection from pirates trade on Tower Island has been flourishing, giving the family even more wealth.
