In 789, the first Runechild appeared. The first runechild carried the mark on the left side of his face. He was a human named Sebian Newcastle. He would not say how he obtained the mark, only that it granted him the power to see that good was done in the world. Many saw this as a sign that the gods were indeed still alive.
