League of Ordinary Gentlemen

The League of Ordinary Gentlemen is a guild that specializes in pairing mercenaries, porters, grooms, shield-bearers, pack handlers, torch-bearers and other such professionals with those that require their services. Adventurers may find various and sundry use for such individuals. The guild strictly regulates the pay of these servants as well as negotiating on their behalf. Disregarding the rules of the guild is a sure fire way to permanently be bereft of hireling help.
Hireling Types and typical duties.
Handler (Porter, Pack Handler, Guide, Tracker): Will accompany employers on surface expeditions only. Will not enter dungeons, mines, towers (haunted or otherwise), or any other potentially dangerous structure. Will fight only in self-defense of the group. If left behind will guard horses, supplies or camp to the best of their ability against fairly normal threats (wolves, small humanoids, etc.) but not against very large or supernatural threats (Dragons, Evil Wizards, etc.) Will not step up in the front lines, will run or surrender instead. Will not ‘take point’, open doors, check for traps or scout ahead (unless their specialty is scouting or tracking, of course).
Wage: 5 sp/day
Bearer (Torch-bearer, Shield-bearer, Spear-carier): Will accompany employers on nearly any type of quest, including dungeon-delving and exploration below ground or in structures. Will play a support role in tactical combat (holding torches, reloading crossbows, tending wounded, firing missiles from the back ranks, poking spears over the head of front-line fighters). Will only step up in the front lines as a last resort. Will not ‘take point’, open doors, check for traps or scout ahead.
Wage: 1 gp/day
Man-at-Arms (Mercenary, Soldier): Will accompany employers on nearly any type of quest, including dungeon-delving and open battle. Will step up in tactical combat, even to the front lines. Will not ‘take point’, open doors, check for traps or scout ahead.
Wage: 2 gp/day plus bonus of 5% of employers monetary share of any treasure, disputes to be settled unilaterally by the League.
Employers are responsible for feeding and equipping all hirelings.
