Metamorphosis of Villa Hahn

April 27, 2013 16:00

Another filthy cultist took at swing at Dr. Lorenz, who jumped back to avoid the cut. The unholy temple was poorly lit and the stench of decay and filth was everywhere. Tobias was by the alter, with a good hold in Karl, the holy child, and his cultists were doing a good job of keeping the intruders back. Meanwhile the high priest was chanting, soon covering the intruders in a miasma of pestilence. The Altdorf Band pressed further into the room, cutting down cultists and Konrad took a shot at the High Priest. Behind the adventurers a new group poured in! Sophia and around 12 of her Minions: “I knew you would lead us to the boy. Humans are so simple. Neither of you will be taking the boy. We need him. He will follow his destiny. He will be the Champion of the Night!”. With that the battle was joined. Dr. Lorenz did his best to stay alive fighting Cultists and Minions. Konrad and Gromnir had a heated argument in the mist of battle of who would have the honor of fighting Sophia. Brother Maynard faced off against the High Priest of Nurgle and finally Gerhart and his dog, the lone dwarf who pressed hard towards Tobias to prevent him escaping with the child again…

Villa hahn

In this episode the Altdorf Band reach Villa Hahn. But not before swimming over a slow flowing river thick with algae. Brother Maynard and Konrad of Altdorf both contracting Green Pox.
As they approach Villa Hahn, Von Gemylte refuse to continue and flies to a nearby tree.
Villa Hahn is a large manor house, the house and grounds completely corrupt by the powers of Nurgle. After discovering evidence of Tobias/Jan’s coming with Karl, the get an overview of the grounds, and then enter the mansion.
Gerhart Brickle bumps into an armor, trying to sneak around in the darkness. But soon the Altdorf Band follows the sound of a girl whimpering. In her room, they face off against her parents… now melted together as a chaos spawn. They quickly destroy it though. The girl bites both Brother Maynard and Gerhart Brickle, however both avoid catching the fatal “Nurlgle’s Rot”. At the upper levels they discover both the journals of Erich and Ruprecht Hahn and start to piece together the story of the family.
Next checking the wine cellar they encounter Lucious Hahn. The father of the family now possessed by some giant bug. Gromnir Groinsplitter quickly destroy them. Brother Maynard also finds a bottle of rate Tilian Wine, likely worth at least a gold crown.
At the ground floor the band further investigates the study, kitchen, library and uncovers more details about Ruprecht. In the dining room, they are attacked by a ghost, and the party flees outside. After trying to set the house on fire, they head for the Hedge Maze. In the maze they almost make it to the center by a series of daunting tracking rolls. But eventually they end up by the entrance again, realizing they need one of the amulets in order to find their way.
The party splits up to search the corpses in the house and the glasshouse outside. Each groups finds a Sigil of Flies. However Gromnir Groinsplitter and Gerhart Brickle both gets affected by “Something Far Worse….” when investigating a bloated corpse. They do find a good deal of coin though!
Armed with two Sigils. One around Gerhart’s neck. He guides the party through the maze. Here they come upon the entrance to the temple. A boated mound of rotten meat pulsing with sick life. They all put effort into it and hack through. Covered in gore, flesh, blood, pus and goo, the party decent into the temple. Gerhart and Konrad now infected with Brown Pox.
Making their wait through the temple, Gerhart discovers the Liber Pandemic.

The Liber Pandemic.
Penned by Hadred over 150 years ago, this book could be the single most deadly item known. Cataloguing hundred of diseases, the book is more of a checklist than how to conjure them yourself. It describes the diseases, usual locations they are found, and even some cures for a couple of them. As a special bonus, Hadred had every page contain a sample of the disease showcased on that page.

Gerhart flips through the book in search of Brown Pox and stops just a page before his goal. He manage to resist contracting anything new before the party destroys the ancient book.
Finally in the temple the party intrude upon the ritual of binding, stopping the High Priest from placing the necklace overKarl‘s head. They charge the cultists, but soon Sophia and her minions emerge from behind. Turning their attention from the chaos sorcerers, the warriors of the party focus on bringing down the vampire.
Tobias/Jan escapes down a tunnel by the alter with Karl only followed by Gerhart. Brother Maynard kills off the high priest and Gromnir Groinsplitter kills Sophia.
Dr. Lorenz is down.
As Sophia’s minions realize Tobias escaped with the child, further fighting is pointless and they withdraw. Maynard manage to press through the tunnel to catch up with Tobias.
Konrad is down.
The remaining cultists take up positions by the Alter to cover the escape of their master.
With the passage blocked off, it now it falls upon Maynard and Gerhart to stop Tobias, a skilled and very dangerous Sorcerer of Nurgle.

The Cultist's Trail

April 12, 2013 18:01

With Altdorf behind, the Altdorf Band has a long trip through Drakwald Forrest ahead. With no food, water, guide, map or equipment it was clearly not going to be a picknick. Never the less they pushed on… Ambushed by goblins, cleaved by a trolls, fighting beastment and mutants alike and avoiding Knights Panthers, the band finally makes it to Kietchdorf.

Kietchdorf seems to hold a secret with almost everyone being sick. The band first equipped up at the Seasoned Traveller. After catching a bit of rumours at the Arm and the Hammer, they did tell the smith about his dead family. Yes, he hanged himself next morning.

The band also learned about the Hahn family. More or less the rulers of the place for a good while. Seems some ill fortune fell upon the place, and the saying is that Villa Hahn is haunted.

The band managed to catch a nurgle cultist by the well. He revealed, after some torture, that he was working for Tobias.

The party later took off towards Ruhrhoff. Here they discovred the house of Ansel Vorman, and found prints of the necklace. A cult attacked them, and it lead to a nasty fight which the Altdorf Band won.

Ready to travel off towards Villa Hahn, to stop a ritual…

… but will they make it in time?

Defiant Scoundrels of Altdorf

Wanted

Confronted with Golphus Drappen and his henchmen, the Altdorf Band resist arrest. After killing Witch Hunter Drappen and one of his men, the rest of his crew leg it.
Gerhart Brickle goes out for the night buy some weirdroot and pay to have some lad take him from behind in a most gay sidetrack of the adventure.
The Altdorf Band reason that they should prepare for the journey to Ruhrhoff. Their first stop at a Cartographer. He let them browse his maps and they discover Ruhrhoff to be a 350 mile journey towards north east. Through the Darkwald forrest.
At a price of 2 gold for the map, they steal the map instead. Alas, Gerhart Brickle never was very subtle and they are caught. The guards are called, and they chase the band through the streets. Gerhart loose his breath and is caught and put in the Dock Watch Station.
The band finally plan a jail-break…. or rather a full assult on the watch station. They kill Sgt. Johnson and his 6 men of the watch, while Lorenz Gasbard entertain a large crowd of people out front. The band sets fire on the station and drags their two unconcious people from the station.
The band finally escape Altdorf by the docks in a row boat, they dodge some cross bow bolts but make it into the night.
Their first journey through the forrest is interrupted by a group of Dark Elf scouts. Gromnir manage to defend the party, and the scouts leave the insane slayer to his not wishing to risk their mission.
On the third morning the party is awake and feeling the bite of hunger as the crew on a few roots. A long journey through the Darkwald lies before them, and with no preperation, guide, horses, food or water the weight of the challenge soon dawn in their minds.

Night of Black Wings

March 15, 2013 06:30

Sophia
Baroness Theodora Margrave opened the door to the lavish black coach, inside soft pillows decorated the seats in soft velvet, the inside illuminated by a two silver oil lamps. The baroness called off her retainers and proposed peace with the Altdorf band, tossing down a sizable pouch full of the silver. The bag hit the street and the contents spilled out over the cobblestones.
In the next moment everything was chaos. Gromnir the slayer, threw himself on the ground, using his both arms to pile up the silver. The near unconcious Gerhart rolled over to grab as much coin as possible, and even the holy Brother Maynard piled in, pushing Gerhart aside to ensure as much coin as possible for the sake of peace. Party tension ran high while Konrad and Lorenz missed out. A heated discussion followed as the Black Coach silently departed. “If you want in on the coin, you gotta sign the contract!”… “But I don’t want to sign, and you already got so much!”… “Give some more to the poor” … another round of violence as Brother Maynard taught the dwarf a few things about collecting charity with the fist.

SUMMARY
After having read some passages in Journal 10, the Altdorf Band descide to seek out Justin Oakstream for help.
They find them in the Ogasse District in Altdorf with his Fellow student Sigimund Keppler. The two students seem to be guarded but are soon convinced to help and help the party by reading through the journal. Realizing this is about a powerful necklace and magic beyond their skills, they insist on taking the journal to their master.
Together they make their way through the streets of Altdorf until the Group is attacked by men clad in all Black!
The Black types snatch the journal and makes it to the roofs with Gromnir Groinsplitter in close pursuit!
Meanwhile Dr. Lorenz Gasbard attempt to overpower Justin Oakstream and a fight breaks out until a Black clad magister appears with a scythe and scares Lorenz off. Could it have been Polycromos the Black??

Meanwhile a dangerous chase follows over the rooftops. Gromnir kills at least 3 Black thieves before finally slipping from the roof and injuring his leg griviously. Sophia, a pale girl in Black leather makes it away with the Journal and climbs into a Black Coach waiting further up the streets.
The party barge through numerous private dwellings, knock Down doors and wrestle through a gold tier restaurent establishment. It comes to blows on the streets of Altdorf as the coach men defend their mistress and others join in against her attackers.
Brother Maynard then calls for Peace and calm in his payers, and as if Shallya listened, the coach door opens and Baroness Theodora Margrave does indeed call off her men, instead offering the Altdorf Band a sizable purse of silver.

Baroness Theodora Margrave lets the purse drop to the ground and silver scatters on the street. Members of the Altdorf band here throws themselves over the coins, frantically fighting eachother for every shilling. (And yes, at this point live action fighting takes place, tension goes high, dice are scattered and chairs fall over).

After composing themselves, the Black Coach has left towards East, and the band find themselves surrounded by Golphus Drabben and his six which Hunters!
- You! Stop in Sigmar’s name! You have eluded us long enough!

Further notes:
The party has concluded that the Necklace must be located in Ruhrhoff…. where would that be?

Behind the Mask

March 01, 2013 07:00

“Let me look at you…. Oh, this is no good. The style is terrible… the hair… No no no! Let me help you, just a few silver and I’ll get you all styled up” The new joiner of the party was quite the expert on the latest trends, and though short on coin, he still wore his non-matching foot wear according to the new style. Gerhart vomited by the table and grumbled “A few silver??? I can polish my own boots for that”. Though negotiations started tough on the coin, the new joiner finally decided to help out the Altdorf Band and see where it would lead him.

The Altdorf Band managed the following this time:
- They realized Tiaraethir Aleanathem must have left the group.
- They accepted Dr. Lorenz Gasbard into the group.
- They got some nice breakfast at their inn.
- They spend some time investigating people on the list. Summarized later.
- Drawing parallel between Ansel and The Vengeance of Sigmar they started looking for makes and sellers of the tin plaques used by him.
- They finally found a seller who remembered a customer with a scar over his forehead. Brother Axel from the temple of Sigmar.
- Talking to Brother Hiltveld they learned about Axel’s work and place of living.
- They also learned that Jan Vanderpeer had already been there asking the same questions. Posing as witch hunter.
- Reaching Axels home, they find him dying. Whispering prayers to sigmar. His body mutilated from torture. When asking about the necklace he deny telling “Tobias” anything else. Axel soon dies.
- The band find his journals and his vengeance costume. Journal 10 missing.
- Following the clue in the last journal they break into the Librarium Secularum Imperium, and after searching most night they uncover first edition of Blood on the Reik, and Ansels journal 10.
- They head back to their inn and goes to sleep. Completely exhausted.

The Year of the Mask

February 23, 2013 16:00

  • After passing the city guards, they discover a fight down Austaushenstrasse. Helmut’s Temple Guards are fighting Jan’s bodyguards!
  • The band joins in and with the help of a Ratcatcher they finally defeat Jan’s men. However Jan escapes with a child-sized coffin into the crowd, aided by some foul magic.
  • Investigating the scene the band obtain a note caught by one of Helmut’s men, together with some of Jan’s cloth. The note speaks of Estlemann, Ansel and some necklace.
  • The party learns a bit about The Pay Wagon Riots, the Bread Riots, The Vengance of Sigmar and the latest style of having Odd Boots.
  • The party get in touch with Lord Frederick. A well connected noble who takes interest in their stories and helps them to locate Estlemann’s shop. A shady dealer in books. He worries about the prospect of Karl falling into the hands of chaos.
  • The party find Estlemann’s shop ablaze. Furthermore a group of witch hunters shortly arrive and prevent the fire from being put out.
  • Estlemann was wounded in the fire and taken to the Shallyan temple in Altdorf. The party heads over there.
  • The party threaten their way in and finds Estleman in the ward for serious injuries. Badly burned and his both legs broken.
  • Estleman describe Ansel as a once loyal customer who then moved to Marienburg. Last year returning with a horrible scar on his forehead, frail and somewhat insane. Holding him at swordpoint and then forcing him to give up his list of “special customers”.
  • Estleman also tells that the man who broke his legs forced him to give up the same list he previously gave to Ansel. All his “special customers”. Noting that he now had betrayed them twice.
  • At the prospect of the witch hunters arrival he begs for death. The party use this to help them to the list. He reveal the location of where they can find the names, and as agreed Gromnir Groinsplitter takes off his head, cheating the witch hunters from their prisoner.
  • The party notice a black pigeon by the window. Matthias immediately shoots it dead.
  • The witch hunters lead by Golphus Drappen are very displeased with this. However as the city guards are called in they are taken to the watch station together with Matthias Eichmann. Golphus Drappen is a witch hunter belonging to the Order of the Cleansing Flame.
  • At the station Matthias Eichmann relate their information from Estleman to Golphus Drappen.
  • Matthias rejoin the party by the burned Estlemanns shop. However they are spotted by some of Golphus’s men.
  • After a few attempts to enter the secret location in various ways, it comes to blows and the party kill the two witch hunters. They stash the bodies in the still slightly burning building. Matthias can not partake in killing witch hunters and leaves the party.
  • The party make it into the secret room through the sewer and find the room void of books. A special cabinet with shelves has also been broken up using violence. The books are missing.
  • “Special Customers” are labeled on the shelves. The rat catcher manage to secure about half of the names. Some more faded than others.
  • When exiting they are surprised by Golphus Drappen and 10 witch hunters. They do all escape except Tiaraethir Aleanathem, who is captured.
  • A grave robber helps the party in their escape and joins the party.
  • On the way towards the temple of sigmar, a crowd claims the witch hunters burned their homes and attacks the witch hunters (Although the crowd did not come from that location). Tiaraethir escapes. A black pigeon sits nearby.
  • The party enjoy lots of sex at The Three Emperors throughout the night.
  • After breakfast they start to question around of Ansel Vorman, but it produce no result.
  • The party do uncover that it seems several of the faded people on the shelves were recently caught by “The Vengance of Sigmar”
  • The party summarize what they know about “The Vengance of Sigmar”: That he started operating in Altdorf a year ago. He finds mutants, necromancers, dark magisters, witches and culsits. Hang them up and nail a plague with a sigmars comet to their forehead. He is well liked by the public for not making mistakes like the witch hunters often do. He dress in black, with a flowing cloak and a black mask covering the upper part of his head. People will gladly help “The Vengeance of Sigmar” if they have the chance.
  • There are still many names on the list not accounted for. But it seems most commoners are only familiar with those they remember being exposed publicly by “The Vengeance of Sigmar”
  • You got info on 3 of the older names on the list. All 3 killed and exposed by “The Vengeance of Sigmar”: Gilgar Brantner, a Banker and Black Magister who sacrificed virgins in his back yard. Karl Hochstetter, a Bright Wizard hiding a third arm under his cloak. Heinrich von Schtuck, a noble son who dabbled in “Natural Philosophy” and turned out to be the leader of a pleasure cult in Altdorf.

It is morning and the party wonders what to do next….

Krieger's Fall

February 03, 2013 10:44

Groff
The smiling butcher took a step out of his tent towards the Altdorf Band, who already had their weapons drawn. He laughed out in a mocking voice as his magical disguise dissolved around him, revealing him as a huge bloated man easily at the size of a toll. His large hands each wielding a cleaver at the size of a battle axe. Gromnir Groinsplitter, wasted no time and charged towards the Butcher carving him with well aimed strikes of his sharp axes.
Butcher Groff just pressed forwards, his cleavers coming down repeatedly on the dwarf as if he was a pig on the butchers slaughter rack. “I’m gonna make you into dwarf chops!” he laughed, as Gromnir was forced back by the assault.
Nurglings poured out of the wagon, and soon the party had their hands busy while the black rider, Ziegfried the Forlorn kept the nearby crusaders from interfering. The nurglings, bouncy and happy jumped upon the rest of the party with glee and joy, but were fended off. The which hunter banishing a few and the Shallya priest assisting with holy prayers.
It was then the butchers opened his mouth as if to laugh again, but this time he vomited bile and disease over the Troll Slayers. Further enraged, the slayer redoubled his efforts! Maybe today he would finally find his doom!

The Altdorf Band engaged in the following activities:
- Encouraged a hunt on everyone with any kind of disease.
- Followed around some persons with lip boils, and realized Butcher Groff’s involvement.
- Brother Maynard cured Matthias Eichmann of a nasty boil.
- Investigated the wood where a chaos alter was uncovered and Kriegers glove.
- Reported Krieger to Jan and Helmut, resulting in his arrest
- The Crusade of the Child reached Altdorf.
- Witnessed Krieger and his men mutating as they tried to break out of the tent.
- Discovered a flea infested rat, but avoid the fleas.
- Investigated around the tent for foot prints (and rolled more than 4 chaos stars!).
- Earned Nurgles love, in their investigation, and Karl Heinrich Weishaupt was bitten and infected with a strange neighlish rot, that soon caused his skin to blister.
- Karl Heinrich Weishaupt fled the wrath of the Altdorf Band into the dark night.
- Discovered the Groff seemed to report to someone called Tobias through one of Jan’s guards.
- The band later confronted Butcher Groff, who cast off his petty illusion revealing himself as a huge bloated butcher (like the Diablo Butcher).
- Gromnir Groinsplitter charged the butcher hoping to find his doom. Alas after a deadly engagement the butcher was finally defeated, and it was evident that the Troll slayer would have to seek more a powerful if he ever hoped to enter the halls of his ancestors.
- The party also uncovered a kettle in Groff’s wagon containing some nasty slimy stuff that infected the dwarf with The Yellow Death.
- Brother Maynard cured Gromnir Groinsplitter of the yellow death.
- Ziegfried the Forlorn helped out the party briefly.
- Discovered that Jan Vandepeer and Karl headed towards the gate to sneak into Altdorf. Guarded by some of Jan’s men and some of Helmut’s Temple Guards.
- Brother Maynard agreed with Father Helmut that the Altdorf Band will hurry after Karl to ensure nothing sinister takes place. Helmut not trusting Jan Vanderpeer.

Additional Fortune will be awarded for:
- Stopping the Yellow Death Plot

The Hour of the Child

January 18, 2013 06:30

It was crowded in the grand tent, packed with Karl’s personal guards and many prominent figures of the crusade. As the Altdorf band faced the child, a tall, powerful captain of sword with sandy hair and a neat beard stepped towards the child. The man dressed in a crisp uniform of Reikguard colors with a captain’s braid hanging on his arm: “These fellows alerted the East camp and they acquitted themselves very well against the undead horrors”
Karl’s pushed forward through the guards to the Altdorf band. He was a handsome boy of nine, dressed in nightgown of the finest quality, a bit timid expression, but a sweet face with bright and inquisitive eyes. He took time to look at each of the Altdorf band in turn and then bowed deeply: “I thank you gentles, I am forever in your debt”
Karl’s physician took an extra look at the wounds of the battered group and meanwhile the Reiksguard Captain send guards into the camp to access the damages and bring back reports.
A tall, heavy-set and red-faced man with long, neatly braided grey hair and beard entered the tent. Wearing heavy full plate he curses out loudly that both elves and zombies had created a rouse in the West end of the outer mob. But we also managed to help out this Sigmar Priest who with his yelling managed draw much of the undead attention to a nearby shed. Father Johannes behind him bowed before the child and praise him, pledging his golden hammer and his loyalty to the child.
A is tall older man and once brawny but now aging warrior build wearing a wearing his full plate armor stepped forward pointing an accusing finger towards on the other other seniors “And where were you?” he asked. “I did not see you defending young Karl”
The accused, a man in mid-forties, short, round and red-faced dressed in the finest merchant outfit raised his voice in turn: "I was mediating a conflict between “The Fist that hold the hammer” and “The Ten”. He finally turns to Karl and reminds him that the Aldorf Band must be asked “The Question”. Karl pouts at this but turns to the Altdorf Band….

In this session the party:
- Was accepted as prospect guards in the inner circle of the Crusade of the Child
- Managed to set up a guard schedule
- Were contacted by Helmut and Jan regarding possible chaos infiltration
- Further had Jan confine his suspicions of Krieger
- Promised to be discrete in their investigation since leaders might be involved.
- Played throw-a-bone with Karl the child
- Gathered a few followers
- Learned that Krieger often leaves the camp at night
- Enjoyed some beer at the new Reaper’s bounty
- Got some meat from the butcher
- Withnesses Ahmeds dad having his wagon search for coffins
- Had no luck finding vampire lore from the Burdened Hearts
- Got a bit of gossip on the leaders of the crusade from some of their men
- Discovered one of Krigers halberdiers with a boil on his lip
- Discovered a woman with boil on her lip
- Overheard two of Jan’s guards talking about where in the woods Krieger snug off too last night.
- Went to Karl’s tent revealing the camp to be infiltrated by chaos
- Explained about the woman with the boil to the leaders of the crusade
- Taken off from guard duty, but allowed to continue investigation
- Tracked down the woman and eventually stated to torture her for information
- Were splattered as the woman burst her mercy boil and vomited blood on the party
- Had their witch hunter infected by Mercy Boils.

It is now morning, The camp is starting to pack up, to get ready to move on.

Dead of the Night

January 04, 2013 18:30

Now in the crusade encampment, the Altdorf Band had found a tent, where they could receive some treatment for their injuries. Badly wounded, the slept though the day and it was only the keen ears of the Agent that saved their lives. Waking up, covered in sweat, something was not right, it was midnight and something outside the tent cast long ghastly shadows on the linen.
“Wake up!! Guards!! Help!!” he cried out, ripping his fellow adventurers from the deep sleep, but also alerting the creatures outside. They ripped through the tent, and a stench of decay filled the tent as ghouls and zombies poured inside!
Without armor, the stout adventurers took heavy wounds fast, zombies were moaning and ghouls tried to rip apart the alert Agent. The troll slayer rose to action and cleaved zombies left and right. The witch hunter, blasting their brains out with his holy bullets. A strange elven beast mage, who had joined their party did his as well. Spearmen arrived to assist, hearing the call for aid, and soon the battle escalated. It was a nightmare of living dead and guard fighting for their lives.
The elf went down, and so did the agent. Where was that blasted Shallya priest when needed?
A ghouls growled “Signal the Master. The diversion is sufficient”, and with that another ghouls blew in a small silent whistle, which gave off no sound.
As the party, slowly gained the upper hand on the zombies and ghouls, a spearman, realized with horror that the child was in danger, and rushed off to warn Karl’s guards.
After a bloody combat, the Altdorf band could finally relax, they were praised for their efforts and were honored with an audience before the Karl, the holy child.

In this episode the Altdorf Band:
- Burned down the Reaper’s Bounty
- Followed the band of Kithband Warriors that helped them
- Later parted ways with the elves in order to rest in the wood.
- Fought off some Gor skirmishers as they were trying to rest.
- Fled towards Gooten, assisted by a strange elven beastmage.
- Learned that the Kithband sought to kill off the child
- Agreed to help and protect Father Johannes Seibolt.
- Agreed to kidnap Karl for Father Johannes Seibolt.
- Infiltrated the Crusade of the Child.
- Talked briefly with Ahmed.
- Noticed that the camp contained some Fortune Teller, Butcher, a place to get ale, many many tents, some kind of leadership, some kind of patrolling, zealots of every kind and of course a primitive tent for tending to the sick.
- Talked briefly with some Singers of the holy word
- Talked briefly with some Burdened heart (Rivals of The Brothers of the Unclosed Wound)
- Noticed some “Fists that hold the hammer” with red bandanas
- Noticed quite some military presence both in Reikland and Middenland uniforms.
- Fought a group of Zombies and Ghouls that attacked from East at midnight.
- Learned that the attack was a diversion.
- Finished off the diversion and helped cut down all the undead.
- Received thanks for their efforts and were taken to see the child.

Finally they learned that the spearman managed to warn Karl’s guards, and they came to the Child’s defense in the nick of time. A horrible ghoulish vampire and ghouls in disguises had tricked the guards and forced their way into Karl’s tent. It had been a deadly fight, but brave men had wounded the vampire, who had then transformed into a bat and fled.

Before Karl, Matthias Eichmann and Karl Heinrich Weishaupt recognized Karls divinity or awesomeness or importance (your choice how you want to see him), and will do everything in their power to ensure the safety of the child that they now love. The elf and the dwarf were unaffected.
(Brother Maynard will get to test in an unmodified daunting roll vs WP next he join)

You now stand before Karl, and that concludes Dead of the Night and third chapter of The Thousand Thrones.
