Clive Conner, heir to the Conner fortune, is sent on a mission to Trada on behalf of the Auroran Navy. As part of Aurora's plan to secure the Ring of Fire from the pirates, Clive is instructed to speak with Samuel Bellamy and declare that all pirates are to cease attacking Auroran trade ships or face total annihilation via ground war.
After wining and dining with friends and family, Clive embarked aboard the Dawnstar en route to Skull Island. Both ship and crew passed into Trada unharmed, and Clive was promptly taken to Bellamy, who awaited his arrival in a tavern.
Bellamy and Clive discussed the terms of the ultimatum, at which point the Dread Captain announced that he possessed no real authority over the pirates of Skull Island, and that he commanded only their respect; not their loyalty. As discussions heated up, Bellamy pulled a pistol on Clive, and was about to execute him when a loud explosion came from the harbor. Forestalling negotiations until after assuring the safety of his ship, Bellamy orderded Clive and his men tied up while he left to investigate the cause of the noise.
