Still retaining much of its original flavor, the Archivist has become primarily an Alchemy-centric class. It's not going to be as "dark" or "tainted" as Heroes of Horror portrays it, but it will still be a rather reclusive class.

The reclusive scholar, the well-read preacher, and Saruman the White are all examples of the Archivist.

Class Skills (4 + Int modifier per level): Concentration, Craft, Decipher Script, Diplomacy, Gather Information, Heal, Knowledge (all skills, taken individually), Profession, Research, and Search.

Special:
 - Weapon and Armor Proficiencies: Archivists are proficient with the dagger and quarterstaff, but not with any type of armor or shield.
 - Forgotten Secrets: Archivists spend immense amounts of time buried deep in ancient, obscure and, in most cases, forgotten texts. They possess a strong command of worldly knowledge, and can often best their opponents through sheer volume of knowledge alone.
     Smatterings: Archivists often read through texts from all corners of the globe, and many possess at least rudimentary knowledge of nearly every spoken language in existence. After spending at least one full minute listening to another spoken language, an Archivist of 1st level or higher may make a DC 15 Intelligence check, adding +1 to his roll for every language he is fluent in. If the check is successful, the Archivist may speak as though he had one rank in whatever language he was studying. This effect lasts for five minutes, plus one minute for every point by which his roll exceeded the DC. An Archivist must have at least 3 ranks in 2 or more Knowledge skills to use this ability.
     Obscure Lore: The Archivist spends a great deal of time reading through material that others would ignore entirely-often gaining a great deal of valuable knowledge in the process. Once per day, an Archivist of 5th level or higher may add his Archivist levels on a single Knowledge or Research check. An Archivist must have at least 7 ranks in 3 or more Knowledge skills to use this ability.
    Tactical Advantage: By 10th level, the Archivist is a welcome ally in all situations, providing useful tips and helpful advice to virtually anything his allies could be engaged in. Any ally within 60 ft of the Archivist (including the Archivist himself) gains a +2 bonus on all attack rolls, skill checks and damage rolls for as long as they can hear the Archivist. An Archivist must have 13 ranks in 4 or more Knowledge skills to use this ability.
     What Once was Lost: The Archivist is truly a master of knowledge, and possesses command of forgotten secrets and lost lore that would drive lesser men to the brink of insanity. Whenever an Archivist of 15th level learns a new word (subject, theme, or modifier) from ranks in the Alchemy skill, he may learn one additional word of the same classification for free. An Archivist must have 16 ranks in Research and 4 or more Knowledge skills to use this ability.
– Bonus Language: At first level, and again at 10th and 20th level, the Archivist may gain full ranks in one language for free. The Archivist still only knows one dialect of any language learned in this manner.
  Depths of Lore: Due to the immense amount of time an Archivist spends wrapped in their studies, they have access to the more obscure knowledge of the world. Archivists begin play with double the lore points they would receive at first level.
 - Lore Mastery: Functions exactly as described.
 - Tough as Nails: The Archivist is very skilled at resisting backlash, even when using incredibly difficult incantations. At 4th level, the Archivist gains a +2 bonus on Will saves made to resist backlash. This bonus increases to +3 at 8th level, +4 at 12th level, and +5 at 16th level. Additionally, the Archivist has a +5% chance to deflect backlash when using incantations above his level range. This bonus increases by another 5% at every four levels after 4th (for a maximum of +25% at 20th level) and applies only to backlash received after making a successful Will save.
 - Pioneering: Beginning at 6th level, the Archivist must spend only one skill point to gain a rank in the Alchemy skill. The skill remains cross-class, however, and their maximum ranks can never exceed 3 + one-half their total level.
 - Stable Coding: The Archivist has, through consistent exposure, become incredibly resistant to backlash. Beginning at 10th level, the Archivist may automatically deflect the backlash he would have received (follow the normal rules for deflecting backlash) once per day. The Archivist must declare that he is using this ability before he begins casting his incantation. He may do this one additional time per day at 14th level, and again at 18th level.
 - Transcendence: Beginning at 17th level, the Archivist happens upon a revelation that grants him great insight into the language of Alchemy. As if overnight, words seem to line up into perfect phrases and commands-allowing the Archivist unprecedented control over Alchemy itself, though exerting this control is incredibly draining. Once per day, the Archivist may, as a standard action, cast a Transcended Incantation. A Transcended Incantation consists of up to five of the Archivist's spells (they must have been developed by the Archivist himself), which can be changed each time this ability is used. However, such a powerful usage of Alchemy elicits an incredible amount of backlash, often proving fatal to any overly reckless Archivist. Upon completion of the Transcended Incantation, the Archivist must succeed on a DC 35 Will save or take 200 points of backlash. This is considered a tier V invocation, so even a successful Will save will result in 100 points of backlash (unless it is deflected). This is a supernatural ability.
