From the journal of Poutis Fidus, Legionnaire in the 8th Legion.

…As I led the rest of my troops into the city of Evenfall I was surprised by its small size. Usually cities where a major house has set up residence are beautiful cites filled with nobles dressed in their finery. Evenfall is little more than a glorified frontier fort. That fact that we are so close to the Wyld is evident even in the approach to the gates. hundreds of the locals stone and thatch houses surround the walls in a random mess. Poorly dressed children and livestock wonder freely and we had to send a sept ahead to clear them out of the way as we approached. While passing we were stared at by the poor Wyldfolk who have come to this city to seek a better life. The builders of this area seemed to have just found a clear spot anywhere they could to build this simple buildings. And the roads outside of the walls, if they can even be called roads, were a muddy maze that weaved in and out between the huts.

Inside the walls it is little better with lose gravel thrown over the dirt to mark where the few roads were. The walls, five foot thick and fifteen foot high of solid grey stone and the matching tower and barracks makes me feel more at home. The cut stone walls and wood roofs are they same as any fort that I have served under. The only buildings that hinted at the presence of nobility were what looked to be a whorehouse and merchants houses that lay upon the est side of town. Several of my men looked longingly at two women dressed in silk who were leaning against the door of a particularly wellmade two story building. and the smells of food that floated from the doorway reminded me of when i was a house guard. My mouth watered immediately. On the way to the barracks, we passed by the house were it appeared traveling merchants lived. Men and women from all over the empire seemed to have decided that Evenfall was a good place to work deals the the local nobles. I saw food, pottery and cloth the quality of which I never seen in a border town before.

Yet even with these sights and smells of home surrounding me, I was still aware that I was on the frontier of civilized lands. The hints of odd accents floated from people’s mouths. Many people I saw had the blond or red hair of the Wyldfolk. And I felt some of the eyes that stared at our passing held the hatred of a people who have not yet seen the glory of our empire….
