Zyf's Journal Part 39
Tuck yourselves in children for this is chapter 39 of Zyf’s Travel Journals
Bedtime Story!
“I don’t want to go to bed!” declared little Zyfina Retrovir. Her bright blue eyes flashed with child-like anger at being told what to do. The nannies and nurses hesitated for just a moment but that was enough for Zyfina to understand that her power over them was absolute.
“Please, young miss,” said the most senior nanny barely controlling her voice, “your parents are planning a grand breakfast tomorrow for the beginning of the celebration and you should be well rested for the festivities.”
“Don’t care,” said Zyfina firmly. “It’s just a silly old party about some rock men and a stupid rock hammer in the front garden of the old house.” She crossed her tiny arms over her tiny chest and stuck out her tiny lower lip defying them to contradict her.
“What’s this I hear coming from my grand-daughter’s bedroom?” boomed a resonating baritone from the outer hall, and in walked Duke Zyf Retrovir, III, retired.
“GAMPA!” squealed the young child running across the room to throw herself into the loving embrace of the old gentleman. “They want me to go to bed and I’m not even tired and there’s a party tomorrow and I can’t invite any of my friends or wear my blue dress and it’s all about some silly thing that happened a hundred years ago, it’s not fair!”
“Child,” said the old man kindly, “I felt the same way when I was your age. All this fuss and bother about something that happened in the distant past. I think you need to hear the story, so change into your night clothes, climb into bed and I’ll tell you the tale of how the City of Myn was saved from destruction…”
Many many years ago, before either of us was born, the City of Myn was known as Avitus and the Emperor at the time, well, let’s just say that he thought more of himself than he did the people. War was upon the land and across the great ocean, the armies of two great nations clashed. What neither side knew, however, was that they were being manipulated by another force! A force that lived in the chaos-realm and believed that war was the only true test. While the army was away, these chaotic beings sent three floating behemoths to raze the city and, therefore, provoke us to even more fighting. Fortunately, calmer heads prevailed and Grand Duchess Amalia, you’ve read about her I’m sure, beseeched her friend and confidante, Zyf, devoted of Myn, to aid her and the citizens of Avitus.
(Yay!)
Zyf arrived instantly because when “Danger is near…”
(“Zyf will be there!”)
That’s right, sweet heart, that’s exactly right. ‘Zyf will be there!’ and he was. He arrived from whereabouts unknown with his cohort, Zyf’s Talons, with him.
(Yay! Was there Smuj?)
Of course, my dear, of course. Smuj would never let Zyf face danger alone.
(And Flann-cene?)
Yes, her too, although she doesn’t figure very strongly in this story.
(And, Saint Emma Carlyon-d’Carabas?)
Yes, yes, all of the Talons, now let me continue. Zyf immediately recognized the threat of the great flying creatures and though the noble houses were countering much of the destructive energies, the red zone did not fare so well and the common citizens were being decimated. Zyf, as we both know, would not let this stand so he called upon the glory of Myn
(Praise Her perfect name!)
to move the souls of the Talons into the great stone statues that surround the city to do battle. The fight was incredible!
Buildings were demolished.
Arcane and divine energies were unleashed in epic proportions.
Many lives were lost, but so many more were saved on that fateful day.
When the battle was finally over and Zyf had defeated that chaotic triad of destruction, he walked his colossus to the old house and placed the gargantuan stone hammer he wielded in our front garden to remind us of that fateful day and to say that House Retrovir was under his protection.
(wow!)
Since then, House Retrovir rose to a place of prominence and it was our ancestors that finally took control of the Lansraad and renamed the city in Myn’s honor.
(Praise Her perfect name!)
That’s right, my dearest, now close your eyes and sleep untroubled because Zyf, devoted of Myn protects you, as do I.
