Karameikos

Here are some of the rumors and gossip that I have gathered over the campaign. Some of these came to me via misha. I have tried to include a blurb about each based on wether I confirmed or utilized the rumor.

MISHA RUMORS:

1- Kelvin military pay has increased, and it is said the Baron’s new military funding creed is to have the best outfitted garrison in the duchy. Armourers are almost exclusively working for the Baron to fill his orders for plate mail. (New suits of plate on guards and soldiers can already be seen in town.)

2- Merchants returning from the town of Sukiskyn (east of Kelvin a few hexes and south of the moors) say the stream flowing through the town from the moors has fouled and is rising, and strange forms have been spotted lurking beneath its surface.
[Turned out to be undead from the burial mounds near Itics where we ran into the purple worm]

3- A ranger reported seeing a dragon circling high above the moors. He swore on his life what he saw was true. The Church of Karameikos and the Order of the Griffon have officially denounced the rumor stating, “The presence of these creatures of black magic is a myth propagated by the superstitious and improperly educated. If there were any such beasts left, the Immortals would strike them dead with their power.”
[This was Madrikovaz a black dragon female. I and my fellow students were sent to slay her 4 young.]

4- Master Montressore is possibly a werewolf, and that it is well known that he is.
[I can not confirm or deny this rumor]

5- Clerics from the Cult of Halav have opened a Healing Shrine of Halav. Devices sold here (like potions) are stamped/emblazoned/etc. with a bust of an image supposedly of the legendary King Halav.
[Have not been able to confirm this rumor, this may be something we need to investigate. We are always in need of healing potions]

6- The Church of Karameikos comes forth declaring the healing powers of the immortals have always been available to the needy righteous for donations. Leadership has discouraged making these services available for commoners lest they be overrun by them. They do not ‘sell’ minor healing, just healing potions which are more expensive and these only from the church clergy themselves. Their more powerful healing is expensive, and no powers are used for just anyone.
[They do have healing potions, however, I have not pursued any effort to buy potions from them doe to my apperance. Perhaps good Salhadin friend of the church could help us on this front. We are always in need of healing potions.]

7- Seers from the Church of Traldar follow suit endorsing local tea leaf/palm readers with their own divine auguries and more obscure, possibly questionable, potions.
[I have encountered a seer, Novice Sharva, in Kelvin. She read my fortune and said “From the north where fortune/demise awaits”. I have not bought potions from the seers and I do not know what types of potions they offer. Perhaps Salhadin or Misha could look into this for us.]

8- Misha wants to leave town, leave the country even. Says the Iron Ring won’t stop until they have Thaljun. Wants Thaljun to flee with him. Darokin, Thyatis, it doesn’t matter.
[This occurred around the time the Iron Ring Society started trying to bring Misha and Thaljun into their ranks. We evaded the society at this time but I feel they are still out there looking to ‘convert’ us to their ways.]

9- A Tourney is announced, the Summer Oak Barrel Tourney. It is being sponsored by Baron Kelvin. There is said to be much drinking at an Oak Barrel Tourney. Nobles from the south, including the Duke, are expected to attend. Baron Kelvin wishes to show off his newly Plated troops and their discipline. It will be held in a month.
[There was a tourney and Misha, my fellow students and I attended. Misha as usual drunk way too much.]

10- The Duke of Karameikos fell ill and went to his hunting lodge to recover. Upon his return he was in a lot better shape than he has ever been. He felt like a new man.
[I am not sure about this rumor and what it might mean. This could be a result of the longevity potion I made and sold to Vorden’s father.]

11- Bishop Trolis Riverman and other Griffon Order / Kelvin guards burned down Jon Traldar’s place. supposedly Traldar was still inside. The bishop claimed Traldar was trafficking in the black arts or knew people who were. The bishop was the one who burned Lindsay at the stake.
[They did burn down Traldar’s place. Traldar was a gnome that had a shop in Kelvin. He was a great resource for goods and somewhat of a friend to Thaljun. Lindsay was a fellow wizard student at Thaljun’s school. She was burned at the stake.]

12- Kelvin plans on assaulting arcanists in the moors. They also plan on investigating an arcane threat beneath the ground to the north (Oulgritamak)

BLACK BOAR INN RUMORS:

1- The townsfolk talk, but the woodsmen know. I hear tell a horde of goblin men have overrun the Dymrak burning and slaughtering as they go. Took a right ‘mount of slaves, too! The woodsmen know. Say they holed up in ruins of the old land. Straight outta the hellfires of yesteryear. Heard the priests of Griffon were roasted over a spit then eaten alive! …or some of them at least. No, won’t pay me enough to settle east, not anytime soon what with winged wyrms and goblin folk aswarming that way.
[This was true, we went out that way to save a freind of my teacher, Stehpan. Goblins and orcs were roaming the lands burning down the homesteads but the Black Baron and his Iron Ring Society were the main ones behind the raids. They were working with the goblins etc.]

2- After a day in the Black Boar, Misha has learned a contingent of Kelvin soldiers led by Griffons journeyed onto the moors to root out evil and returned recently having proven stories of the black wyrm untrue with a report of flooded and empty caves. Thus the beast was simply idle rumor mongering. They also swept through the Dymrak destroying two tribes of goblins.
[Not sure if this is true, it may just be Order of the Griffon propaganda.]

3- Trade rumor: New boot and leather maker shop in Specularum. Not associated with the local guild, can’t get raw materials. Owner would pay premium prices for a good quantity. Such materials are in good supply in Kelvin at the moment.
[Acted on this sent a load of goods to Specularum with Misha and a half-elf named Tril. This was very lucrative, and yes Misha did actually bring back my share of the money!]

4- Trade rumor: Fire burned down largest glassblowing establishment in Selenica. Glass in demand now. Glass shipment in Kelvin just sitting in storage, because the merchant transporting it from Specularum fell ill and cannot distribute it.
[I was not able to act on this trade rumor. I had too many other things going on.]

HIGH FORGE RUMORS:

1- King Hilltopper, some of his retainers and part of his family were all blown up by the grey goblins. It is said that 1000 gnomes left with the remnant of hilltoppers family, no one knows where they are now. There are still gnomes living in High Forge that are loyal to the remnant of the king’s family left in high forge. The grey goblins and dwarves have taken over mining and are now selling coal to the gnomes at a reasonable price. Master Bitdak is still leader of the Grey Goblins and is running High Forge along with the dwarves. Master Bitdak is now mostly in charge of high forge. Mehk Geyrlin is leader of the dwarves in high forge.
[These events did happen. I still do not know what became of the gnomes that left.]

2- Dwarves mining for coal have broken into a vast cavern below High Forge with large stalactites.
[This cavern is the one that contained GLISS. I was able to help the dwarves to destroy GLISS but at the cost of my life and human form. I was resurrected by the Elves into my current elvish form.]

3- Narnak is looking for someone to go and retrieve more ogres for use by the Grey Goblins. The ogres are said to live far to the east. The Goblins are offering around 500gp per healthy ogre that is brought to them.
[Misha, Darterous, and I gathered cows and turned them into ogres to sell to the goblins]

Laer’ymrak - Excerpt from a book found in the masters private library.

The approach by boat was said to touch the soul for the Wyrderis and Venderis trees standing by each side of the river rising hundreds of feet into the sky. Of the Two Trees Wyrderis would capture and radiate the silver light of the moon throughout the day and Venderis the pale golden light of the sun throughout the night. The first Traldar called it Vrodinsolstad, the city of light and splendor. Here the scholars, artisans, and nobles of Vyalia gathered along with some Western elves (Callarii), gnomes, and even dwarves. The favor of the immortals shone down upon the Vyalia until the discovery of the dwarves. Immortals of the Sphere of Energy, vengeful for the destruction of the Radiance, placed the Slabs within the dwarves’ mines, four 20’x10’x1’ blackish green slabs of an unknown mottled, rocky metal incredibly hot to the touch and weighing five times more per cubic foot than lead. Gnomes devised the way to harness its power by extending their tunneling beneath the lake into a complex where the Slabs were placed into lead slots. The idea was to blow the lake bottom, flood the slot chamber, and create tremendous pressure against the Slabs. Under that much pressure, they would exert pure energy into the air which could be harnessed by all manner of devices. The problem was the heat generation that accompanied the release of power from the Slabs, but that was being taken care of by a pump installed in the room to circulate in cool water from the lake. The power could be harnessed as far away as Vydrast, and all manner of devices particularly gnomish were appearing like lights, heating devices, and even weapons unlike any seen before. The Immortals of the other spheres could not allow their balance of power to fall to Energy so they blocked the circulation to the Slabs. The build up of heat melted the rock and metal of the chamber flooding the complex and stopping the energy process. It is said the Tarrasque was seen on this day and the immortals’ wrath did not stop here.

From time spent searching the Forbidden Library:

Wizards of old used their own blood in a ritual and process to create an arcane servant to aid about their towers and assist in research. It is written they could also instill arcane life in the root of the mandragora for similar purposes. (Found in a chapter titled “Homonculi, Mandrakes, and Tsimshiv”). In the early age of Glantri, magic-users studied at the Great School of Magic, a place where the resources of the principalities combined to create a haven for arcane studies. Among basic courses taught to students: nearly any language (spoken or forgotten), mandragora sciences, spell combination, combat casting, and meditation. Legends tell of secret sects within the school capable of advanced and specialized instruction in an avenue of the arcane arts like alchemy, elemental channeling, and dracology.

Information found in some of the books Master Montressore is studying:

The collection of books contained books that were new, and some that were damaged and warped in odd ways. They were history books, but from a time or a history I was not familiar with. The history talks about a ship called the “F.S.S. Beagle” that crashed or was destroyed a millennium ago. The immortals of energy warped the powers of the ship to make an artifact that is thought to be located somewhere in the Principalities of Glantri
which is north west of Darokin. There is a scroll that talks about a group that went back in time to destroy the “Beagle”, this is what apparently caused the time accident. It suggests that this event was what caused the current state of magic in the world. One book mentions a demon guardian that was place by the immortals of Entropy to guard the current timeline. One scroll contains arcane inscriptions and notations that I am unable to understand, even with read magic.

Dream:

Crowds of angry townsmen, priests, and soldiers, the school, then flames, and the building lies in ruin. Flying through the swamps east to a great tree that grows into a tower tree…" Your consciousness zooms to Montressore meditating, his eyes snap open, the Order of the Griffin is on a crusade. They seek all arcaners actively with the power of their immortals. Find us on the path I have shown you. Be swift. Be smart. Be careful."

Rumor picked up by Misha:

The Bracelet of Friendship – Misha has heard the story of the Immortal Patrons of Karameikos:
Petra (the Wizard), Zirchev (the Woodsman/Hunter), and Halav (the Fighter and Leader) who fought off the Ugnal Invasion and saved the
Traldar people. Supposedly, Zirchev was friends with the Wizard Zelligar, who along with Rogahn were also heroes of some note. Zelligar and
Rogahn had a fortress, from which they went on many adventures. Now the fortress lies in runis, and upon an Abbey of the Order of the Griffin was built.
The fotress/Abbey is located in the Dymrak Forest. It is said that Zelligar had given Zirchev one of the charms of the Bracelet, and that with the Bracelet that Zirchev
(or his remains) could be summoned. Zirchev, being a mighty hunter, may have had artifacts of stealth and lethality.
(Misha acquired the Bracelet of Friendship – in the Caverns of Quasqueton where the Keep was located)

Historical Items:

1- 12X6 tapestry – depicting a city between two folks in a river (maybe Kelvin) with a man with red hair in bronze armor (Halav) leading an army of jackal headed people (Hutaaka) The tapestry is titled “Flight from Lavv”

2- An unframed painting of a temple titled – “The temple of Pflarr”

3- An unframed painting of a double star symbol in the night sky titled – “The night star, or Pflarr in night sky”

4- An unframed painting of a priest with a jackal head titled – “High priest in counsel”

Information learned from studying the Traldarian and Hutaakan books and scrolls:

Learned the true history. There were two races of canine headed creatures. The Ugnal were dog headed and savage. The Hutaakan were jackal headed and where a more advanced culture.
The Hutaakan worshiped Pflarr and dominated a race of ogre like beings known as the Norrun.
The Hutaakan, had a settlement in the valley where we found the granite that was once a silver mine but they abandoned it leaving much behind.
The Hutaakan, recalled to their valley and sealed themselves in. This valley is to the north above Threshold beneath the mountain of Hutaak.

Glantri Based Rumors:

From the Manual of Teleportation by Slucien Mastrus the Caurenzian:

“Little taught and little understood, it is as important that a wizard know where he is as it is that he is familiar with the destination to which he desires to teleport. The geographically illiterate mage is in for a long journey of stepping through teleportation once he strays from the known path. One need only look at the errant wizard Teldon for proof. This Almontian wizard settled in Karameikos after mistakenly teleporting to its capitol while trying to reach the Savage Baronies. Having no clue of where he was, he eventually gave up endlessly teleporting off target and resigned himself to a life of drudgery in that backwater nation.”
