Le Ballet de l'Acier
The site will be down for maintenance at 0715 EDT on May 18. It will be short, around 10 minutes.

Situated near the river quays of Grenoble, the Lion and Serpent was long favored by the bargemen plying the waterways of the Isère and the Rhône and the craftsmen who service the river barges as well as the merchants whose goods they carry. With the construction of new defensive works around the city under the governor, Lesdiguières, including the Bastille, the tavern attracted soldiers from the local garrison. Friction between the bargemen and the soldiers was fierce, resulting in many deadly brawls, but the provosts-martial and the municipal magistrates cracked down on the violence and an uneasy truce is maintained between the factions.

The Lion and Serpent is a large establishment, roughly furnished and finished, with cheap food and drink. It is frequented by cheap trollops looking to make a handful of sous from the denizens of the tavern. A street musician or three can usually be found busking among the tables, and gambling, primarily dice, is a regular pastime.
