Les Cévennes
A range of rugged mountains composed of a mix of granite and limestone, the Cévennes stretch across Languedoc from southwest to northeast, along the edge of the Massif Central. A maze of valleys, the mountains are the source for many French rivers, including the Loire and the Gardons, a major tributary of the Rhône. The summits are made up of a succession of plateaux, ranging from undulating to table-flat, separated by the vast limestone spaces that called causses. Forests of chesnut occupy portions of the landscape.
The region was once home to the heretical Cathars, and is now occupied by many of the Reformed faith.
