Marche

The province of La Marche (“the March” or “the Mark”) was a county created by the duke of Aquitaine in the 10th century for one of his vassals; it was so named due to its position on the border of the duchy. The county later passed to the Lusignan dynasty, crusaders and kings of Jerusalem, Cyprus, and Cilicia. Seized by the crown in the fourteenth century, it eventually passed back and forth between the illustrious families of Bourbon and Armangac before reverting to the royal domaine in 1527.

The landscape is a series of plateaus and rolling hills cut by deep river-cut valleys. Peat bogs are found in a number of locations. It is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. The elevation provides rain throughout the year.
