Founded in 1390 by Philippe de Mollans, a Burgundian nobleman who returned from a pilgrimage bearing a relic of Saint George. The order created by Mollans venerates Saint George and serves to protect the relic, pilgrims, and the Church generally. Members of the order are lay knights of noble birth.
