The Portuguese Order of Saint James of the Sword shares the origins of the Order of Santiago in the twelfth century; the Portuguese order split from the Spanish order in 1290 and was confirmed as a separate creation by the pope in 1320. The knights of the order share similar responsibilities to those of the Order of Santiago.
