Peerage of France

The French dignity of peerage was created during the reign of King Louis VII in the twelfth century. Peers may be nobles or prelates, vassals of the king of France who are considered to be the equal of the king in honor, marking the king as first among equals (primus inter pares). The title and position of Peer of France (pair de France) signifies great prestige and is held by the highest-ranking members of the French nobility.
