Mass Effect: Blackwell

The Hanar are a race of translucent beings around three meters tall and resemble Earth jellyfish. They are one of the few races in Citadel space to not be bipedal. The Hanar have an extreme cultural obsession with politeness and proper speech. Hanar that work with other sentient species must take special classes to unlearn this natural tendency. The Hanar individual has two names: a “soul name”, known only to close friends and family, and a “face name”, known to the general public. They also refer to themselves as “This one” or “It” when speaking to anyone except close friends and family, as their culture considers referring to themselves as “I” egotistic.

The Hanar view the Protheans as mythological figures, the “Enkindlers”, and not former living beings. This has led to some interfearence on the part of the hanar with regards to archaeological study of the Protheans, a practice seen as sacrilegious.
