Mass Effect ranged weapons use mass accelerator technology. The guns shave a bullet the size of a grain of sand off a dense block of metal stored in the gun, decrease its mass with a mass effect field, and fire the projectile at hypersonic velocities. Melee weapons are fairly simple by comparison, even if they are constructed of advanced composite materials that hold an edge and slice through armor more effectively than their ancient counterparts.
While many of the qualities of most weapons remains unchanged, there are some differences. These are noted below.
Shots: This number indicates the number of rounds that may be fired before the ranged weapon overheats. A weapon that has overheated must remain idle for 1 full round before it may be fired again (though a character may still use a weapon to pistol-whip or otherwise club an opponent).
