A Manifestation of Chaos

The Magic Starved

Story

Once human, they have become creatures that feed upon raw magical energy. They live amid the rocks, stepping in and out of the holes in reality, looking for some scrap of magical power. After the characters have gained their bearings, one will stumble up to the group.

When a spellcaster approaches one of these wretches, it instantly recognizes the character’s magical ability with its arcane sight and approaches. It begs and pleads for the wizard or cleric (or even ranger, bard, or paladin) to “cast a spell, just a little one”.
“That’s all I need . . . just one and then I’ll leave you be.” If the caster refuses, the entreaty continues: “Please, I’m begging you. You wouldn’t deny a starving man food would you?” The pleading never ends — the pitiful creature agrees to any request or demand in order to get the spell.

If a character does cast a spell (or even use a magical item), the magic-starved creature gasps in pleasure. Then, the selfish creature steals spells from the caster’s mind or charges from magical items. The magic starved will not stop until killed or no magic is within its range.

Abilities
Steal Magic (Su) At will; Standard action; Range 200ft. Items may use the save of their wielder or their own save, whichever is better.
Usually, the magic starved will grovel in the dirt while unobtrusively stealing spells. The spell caster can make a Perception DC20 check to notice the loss of the spell, spell-like ability, or magic item charge. The magic starved will continue to use this ability until there is no spells, spell-like abilities, or charged magic items in detectable range. Instantaneous

Absorb Magic (Su) Magic cast within 200ft of a magic starved is absorbed as if cast at a creature with a rod of absorption. This caus-es the creature to gasp in pleasure and allows it to start attempting to steal magic (see above). If any spells are cast around a group of magic starved, they will move close to the caster, pleading for more spells and attempting to steal magic. Always Active.
