Midgard: Years of the Long Night

This glossary will probably be constantly updated. Check back often. If/when it grows too large and unwieldy it will be re-organized into sections (probably Events, Places and Concepts, or something similar).

AGE OF ABASHMENT
The age following the disappearance of the Vanished Gods, during which all of the races warred openly with each other. Ended with the destruction of the human empire and the Moonfall.

ARTEFACTS
Items of great magical power and rich history. Many Artefacts are believed to have their own minds, and perhaps even contain the souls of their creators or wielders.

CURATOR RACES
Aelf, Giants and Men. These were the races chosen by the Vanished Gods to receive the secret methods of maintaining the New Realms.

DEMESNE
Artificially excavated extra-dimensional spaces. Alternatively known as ‘demi-planes.’ Demesnes are powerful spaces which often take on a life of their own and depths far beyond those intended by their creators.

ENDWORLD
Valhalla, from which all life comes and to which all life must return.

FEYWILD
The demesne created by the Eladrin. A lush and fickle environment inhabited primarily by the Eladrin and the Gnomes.

INFERNAL WORLDS
Hel and Niflheim, the planes of Negative Energy.

MOONFALL
The cataclysmic moment when the moon fell from the sky, devastating all of the great empires of the Age of Abashment. The exact cause of the Moonfall is unknown.

NEW AGE
The centuries following the New Realms’ creation, during which the Vanished Gods and their Curator Races ruled over all, and the world was filled with peace and joy.

NEW GODS
The many gods who arose from the chaos of the Age of Abashment. See Pantheon for more information.

NEW REALMS
Midgard, Jotunheim and Vanaheim.

OLD REALM
The world from which came the Vanished Gods and the ancestors of the New Realms’ inhabitants. Destroyed when the World Tree fell during Ragnarok.

RAGNAROK
The Final Battle which felled the World Tree and destroyed the Old Realm, leading to the Vanished Gods’ creation of the New Realms as a home for the survivors.

SEVERED REALMS
Vanaheim and Jotunheim, which were cut off from Midgard during the Moonfall.

SUPERNAL WORLDS
Asgard and Muspelheim, the planes of Positive Energy.

VANISHED GODS
The four gods who created the New Realms, Wotan, Ziu, Donar and Frouwa. See Pantheon for more information.

WILDING
Also referred to as ‘the wilding of the world,’ the ongoing unmaking of civilization and reclaiming of the world by feral nature and unnature.

YEARS OF THE LONG NIGHT
The present age, during which the survivors of the Moonfall and their New Gods have banded together to survive in the new, devastated world. The seasons are slowly shifting in length as Winter begins to take over, the stars have begun to vanish from the sky, and the nights grow longer, colder and darker.

YGGDRASIL, THE FALLEN WORLD TREE
The great tree from which all planes originate. Legend has it that eons ago, during the battle of Ragnarok, the World Tree fell and has been slowly dying ever since.
