Torven and the Fall of Phaedra

Sauda denounces Legless for not being truthful, leading us to a treant infested area, instead of asking for our help.  Phaedra distresses about having trusted her Uncle and ingesting the tektite infested potion.  The only cure is to destroy her body.  If she is to survive that process, says a high-level cleric, she needs to transfer her soul from one body to another.  There is no ritual or spell known that can accomplish such a feat.  She must live with the consequences of quaffing the potion, for the foreseeable future.

Atur

Crusher is speaking with Lance, a blue-collar warforged, who only wants to be accepting into society as an honorable Karnnathi citizen, but the prejudice is intolerable.  The fleshies remember warforged as enemies.  Quiet and subtle mention is made of an entity otherwise known as The Lord of Blades, who lives in the Mournland, formerly Cyre.  He seeks to collect as many warforged as he can, and it is rumored that he is also in possession of Creation Forges that were not destroyed after The Last War.

Phaedra mentions her tektite problem.  One of the warforged overhears and approaches, asking her how she knows about tektites.  He asks permission to examine her ‘netting’, her life force, and Phaedra consents.  It takes no time at all for him to determine that she is heavily infested with the mini-warforged.  He says that he supposes that, if he had a Creation Forge, he might be able to create other tektites to combat the ones infesting her, but it would take years of research and resources.  Phaedra thanks the warforged for the information.

We take our leave and head to the lightning rail, to travel from Atur to Korth.  Arolan makes small talk with his son.  He’s quite proud of the fact that Tralfaz succeeded in killing him.  The motion and speed of the Lightning Rail does not agree with Tralfaz.  Arolan finds a waste can for him to wretch into.  Runty is still steaming over the riddle at the lady peddler’s house and missing out on having a familiar.

Over the intercom, an announcement is made that the lightning rail is being ambushed by House Medani.  The announcer calls for the aid of any heroes on board.

Several footfalls are heard on the roof.  Emboldened after speaking with his warforged brethren, Crusher summons Winsome Dog and runs towards the back of the car he is in, then climbs the ladder to stand on top of the train.  Phaedra follows.  The five House Medani assassins smile oily, sinister smiles.  One yells, “Kill the heir!”  Arolan uses his Winged Boots to ascend to the rooftop.  Two Medani assassins tumble off the roof and deftly catch themselves, clinging to the sides of the car and simultaneously firing back at Phaedra – sinking three arrows into her breast.  Runty runs through the cars to catch up with everyone else, busting through the doors.  Sauda moves closer to her allies.

Leaping from one car to another, Crusher charges an assassin – but his attack misses.  Once close, Crusher notices his enemy is slightly translucent and realizes it is Torven d’Medani, a very powerful figure in that house who is also undead.  Phaedra’s True Strike power misses Torven.  Arolan uses his Thunderworm’s Jaws power, hits, and says, “There’s only room for one undead warrior here!”  “I actually felt that,” Torven responds.  “Maybe you aren’t the piddling trash I thought you were.”  With that, he turns insubstantial phases past Crusher and then tries to mesmerize him.  Crusher is dazed.  The two assassins target Phaedra and she suffers, and is weakened.  Torven almost sinks his fangs into her neck, but she falls unconscious.  The archers coldly target Phaedra.  Arrows strike her limp body.  Runty starts climbing to the train roof but stumbles off, barely staying on the train.  Sauda climbs up to the car roof and heals Phaedra.

Crusher, shaken by Phaedra falling so quickly in battle, makes little impact with his attack.  Phadra escapes from the assassins barbs and stands.  Arolan uses his Bedeviling Burst power against Torven.  The attack hits.  Torven takes damage and is pushed from the train top.  Arolan calls out, “Later, bitch!”  Torven, however, manages to scramble back to the train and grab on to a ladder.  His boots of Spider Climb allows him to gain the roof again without issue.  One assassin moves past the dazed Crusher to reach Phaedra and entangles her with his barbed weapon.  The archers’ arrows puncture her chest again.  This time, Phaedra’s limp body falls over the edge of the train.  Grom reaches the roof top and attacks Torven.  His hit hurts Torven.  Runty attacks another assassin and knocks him from the train.  Crusher asks Sauda to stop the train.  She runs to the control room and calls out to the conductors to stop the train.  As the train lurches to a stop, a couple of the assassins and some of the heroes fall prone.

Crusher stands and shakes off being dazed.  Arolan misses with a Twin Bolt attack.  Torven calls out, “The heir yet lives!”  The assassins rush towards Phaedra.  Arrows pierce her body through.  The look on Torven’s face lets us know the he no longer detects her life force.  Grom runs towards the enemies.  Sauda continues to talk to the engineers in order to keep the train stopped.  Looking out of the control car, Sauda sees pieces of Phaedra strewn across the landscape.  She exits the trains and picks up Phaedra’s decapitated head.

Crusher charges on of the enemies, knocking him back fifteen feet.  Phadra’s body twitches.  Arolan moves closer to the enemies.  Torven shouts, “Ranger next!”  We look confused for a second, but assume he means Arolan.  Crusher stops an enemy dead in his tracks with an attack of opportunity.  The Medani archers fire their arrows at Arolan.  Grom’s attack misses.  Sauda convinces the conductors that she was putting a ritual item into her pack, and also to keep the train stopped.  Crusher summons an uncommonly used power and shifts Grom next to an assassin.  Then he attacks and hits the assassin he’s now flanking with Grom.  Arolan’s Chaos Bolt hurts the same target.  The Medani archers target and hit Arolan with four arrows.  The other three Medani group up on Grom and cause him some grief.  Grom, dazed, does some damage.  Sauda closes the distance between her and her enemies.

Crusher hits an assassin.  Arolan’s Chaos Bolt attack misses.  The archers let fly four arrows into Arolan.  Instead of dying, he become dazed.  Grom is grabbed by one assassin, attacked by the other and also by Torven.  Grom takes out one of the assassins, one still has him grabbed.  Sauda climbs up to a train top and heals Arolan.  Torven drinks some of Grom’s life force.  Sauda heals Phaedra.

Crusher flanks Torven, but misses with his attack.  Arolan’s attack misses, but he shakes off the effect of being dazed.  Torven’s attack misses Grom.  Three assassin arrows pierce Arolan’s fine vest, and he’s bloodied again.  Grom shakes off being dazed and weakened.   Sauda heals Arolan, again.

Crusher finally damages Torven.  Arolan chooses his Dazzling Ray power and damages Torven.  Torven misses Grom again.  Another three assassin arrows put more holes in Arolan’s clothes.  Grom’s attack misses Torven.  Sauda heals Arolan.

Crusher hits Torven.  Arolan moves.  The enemy archers move to take aim at Arolan.  All four of their arrows hit.  Torven attacks Grom.  Grom hits Torven.  Tralfaz disembarks.  The magewright conductors start to power up the train and it levitates.

Crusher hits Torven.  Winsome Dog opens the door to the car holding Crusher’s steed.  Arolan’s attack misses.  Torven misses Grom again.  Arolan is pierced by four arrows.  Grom’s attack misses Torven.  Sauda gets of the train just in time as it speeds off.

Crusher’s attack misses, so does his dog’s.  Arolan also misses, but he’s hit with three arrows – and he’s down.  Grom is Scourged and bloodied, but he strikes back and slays Torven.  The other assassins teleport away.  Grom notices a wooden box drop out of Torven’s cloak, as well as a note.  Cracking open the box, we see a crown glittering in the sun.  Arolan tries to pick it up – and is almost poisoned to death.

The note indicates that the crown was stolen from Phaedra’s uncle, who was supposedly trying to protect Phaedra and get the crown to her so she could assume her authority.  Crusher takes Torven’s head, hands, and feet – because he drank Phaedra’s blood and should have tektites in his body.

Go see Kaius

Aww, thanks Johnna! Your posts have more flavor, though, are quite enjoyable, and illuminate points that I tend to overlook.
