Mary asks Jane for advice.

Mary, Jane

Mary discusses recent events, Boris’s wound, new red aura of vampires. Jane tries to probe more about Mary’s romantic interest in Dougal and Boris.

Mary discusses Boris’s tendency to hide shoulder these days even though fully healed. Jane mentions strange ointment she has noticed him using on his shoulder, and suggests he may be hiding an ongoing condition. They conclude he should be convinced to take some more tests in the lab or infirmary.

Preparing for mission in new gear and outfits.

All protagonists, Dougal, MacAllister, McDuff, other mission team

Mission team including all protagonists is being fitted in new outfits and gear. Dougal explains recent vampire activity in a previously-abandoned nest at Arthur’s Seat. Mary suggests Jane’s idea about Boris’s wound to Fanny. McDuff fits team into their suits; treats Fanny callously, whispers to MacAllister.

• Boris: Do I get the respect of the rest of the team? (yes)
• Fanny: Do I get a chance to quiz Boris? (no)
• Mary: Do I get called away to the lab? (no)
• Producer: Does MacAllister confront Fanny with the photo? (no)

McDuff sees MacAllister trying to speak with Fanny, and deliberately intercedes by distracting the two of them in details of their new suits and equipment. Mary gives excuses to Dougal for exemption from the mission, but Dougal is unimpressed. Eventually Boris takes the lead by gathering the whole team and organising them to depart.

Arthur’s Seat

Introduce Knox as bad guy.

All protagonists, MacAllister, other mission team, Knox, Wallis

Boris is de facto leader into nest, and quietly clears the path to the large central chamber, with much equipment and factory-like construction. Mary identifies Knox and another new-breed vampire addressing assembled old-breed vampires, but their conversation isn’t distinct. Mary also sees Wallis among the crowd. The team move in to destroy them.

• Boris: Am I cool and in control during the big fight? (no)
• Fanny: Does Boris avoid harming Wallis? (no)
• Mary: Does I see Boris’s red vampire aura? (no)
• Producer: Does Mary get captured? (yes)

Extended sequence:

• Boris goes into a frenzy attacking the vampire horde, far more than other team members. Wallis, on far side of chamber, recognises Mary.
• Wallis begins to fight toward Mary, as one of the lieutenant new-breed vampires notices this and moves through the crowd to intercept.
• Boris rises from the fray, wounded but bloodthirsty; sees Mary captured by vampires, rushes to her aid. Wallis arrives at the same time, to be dealt an awful wound by Boris. Mary is taken through a passage and out of the scene before anyone can help.

Fanny searches for Wallis.

Fanny, Wallis

Fanny searches frantically for Wallis for hours, at first accompanied by Newbury Commission team but dwindling until she searches alone. Exhausted, she finally returns home to find Wallis, beaten and unconscious.

• Fanny: Does Wallis tell where Mary is? (no)
• Producer: Does Fanny let Wallis feed from her? (yes)

Wallis is weakened, barely conscious, and obviously mortally wounded; he is not able to describe what happened clearly. Fanny slowly realises he needs blood immediately, and she has no option: with a knife she cuts into her wrist and puts it to Wallis’s lips. He instantly grabs her arm and feeds hungrily from the open vein.

Abandoned warehouse

Mary is tormented by her captors.

Mary, Knox, old-breed vampires, Boris

Knox, assisted by several old-breed vampires, rigs Mary into a racked machine and chases assisting old-breed vampires away while he works. Boris eventually deduces their location and hurries there.

• Mary: Do I get rescued from this fate? (no)
• Boris: Do I hear Knox’s scheme? (no)
• Producer: Does Knox turn Mary into a vampire? (yes)

Knox fits Mary down with straps and bolted frames, while he leisurely tells of his plan to turn Mary and use her to defeat the Newbury Commission. He stretches wide his jaws and syringe fangs extend; he sinks them into her neck and the blood flows.

Suddenly Boris tears open the panels of the roof, sunlight streams into the corners of the warehouse and he leaps down to attack Knox. The doctor retreats from Boris and his fangs are damaged, but Mary is wounded and sickly as Boris carries her out.

Commission infirmary

Treating Mary’s condition, but ineffectually.

Mary, Fanny, Dougal, Jane

Days of treatment in the infirmary have left Mary stable, but still sick. All discuss the implications of recent events: vampire-like people operating in open daylight, and Mary’s condition not responding to the usual treatments. Dougal orders Fanny to conduct tests on her to find why her condition isn’t responding to the usual treatments, but Jane angrily defends Mary insisting she be left alone.

• Mary: Do I discover an increase in my abilities? (yes)
• Fanny: Do I take Mary to the lab for tests? (yes)
• Producer: Does McDuff overhear the talk about Mary? (no)

Fanny reassures Mary as they go to the lab, where technicians and strange equipment are employed to test Mary’s blood, reactions, etc. but nothing conclusive. Though she is still unwell, the puncture wounds are completely healed and her blood is shown to be far “richer” and vigorous compared to human blood.

Mary is hazy with all the activity, but senses a new ability: as Fanny’s hands work near her, she can “smell” intimacy with a vampire distinctly lingering on Fanny and immediately understands what this ability is telling her.

MacAllister confronts Fanny over the photo.

Fanny, McDuff, MacAllister

Fanny and McDuff argue over design of a new garlic-woven cape device, but the topic soon becomes personal and bitter. MacAllister interrupts and McDuff storms out. MacAllister takes Fanny aside and demands an explanation for the photo of James Wallis with Fanny.

• Fanny: Does MacAllister believe lame explanation? (yes)
• Producer: Does Dougal see the confrontation over the photo? (no)

Fanny blusters and casts doubt on MacAllister’s obsession with the photo, diverting him from the question of whether it even portrays Fanny at all. Dougal and McDuff come back and the conversation awkwardly moves to other topics, but suspicions remain high.

Fanny talking with Wallis.

Fanny, Wallis

Fanny finally takes the opportunity to discuss with Wallis his recent experiences with the new breed, and pressures Wallis with his debt to her, and asks to be converted in return.

• Fanny: Does Wallis agree to turn me? (yes)
• Producer: Does Jane overhear the conversation? (no)

Wallis resists heatedly, insisting that Fanny is making a poor choice and that he needs a trusted contact who has not been turned. Fanny insists they can work better together if she has the vampire abilities, and that he is the only one she can trust to do this.

A noise outside (Jane, trying to get closer to the window) cuts the conversation short, and Wallis snaps his agreement, saying he will contact her within two weeks.
