Refer to Index of Argyre Factions and Leaders for present poltitical situation in Argyre.
Argyre settlement began as a mining camp after the discovery of multiple sizable mineral deposits in the area. The original settlement was accessed by ground via tracked landtrain. The dispersed deposits led to mobile mining teams operating out of the central settlement (later named Argyre) and the settlement grew as more deposits were found by prospector teams and the demand for minerals in Daedalus continued to grow.
Construction of a beacon and permanent docking facilities for airships accelerated the growth of the settlement and was the point at which the settlement was officially named. By this stage the settlement was also being used for refinery and smelting to process the ore before transit, where previously unrefined ore had been sent which was less efficient. Argyre is also vital to supporting the Surrounding Area of Argyre, the Old Frontier and New Frontier. The zone of mining between Perdix and Argyre is referred to as the Lost Frontier through which the current Travel between Argyre and Perdix passes.
Currently the settlement includes the Old Quarter including the original mine-support facilities, warehouses and loading platforms for landtrains. It also includes miner-support facilities such as pubs, clubs, inns, and other entertainment, barracks and quarters. The original medical and communications facilities were a land train tractor, VTOL trailer and MASH trailer which had been used in the first days of the settlement and predated any permanent structures. Currently under command of Dr Parker. The Old Quarter has become dated as more resources are directed to the mining company quarters and New Quarter, although some of the facilities remains in use as do the entertainment venus. Large portions of the Old Quarter have no access for large vehicles such as land trains, and the Old Quarter also lacks many of the connecting tunnels or above ground walkways that characterize the newer quarters and other planned lowlands settlements. With the transition from mining camp to transport hub, other Old Quarter infrastructure has become unsuitable, or been salvaged and redeployed on the New Frontier. This quarter has also become known as the “west quarter” now that it is no longer central. The Old Quarter is also the being repurposed to support the new water-mining industry and efforts, hopefully this will give a new lease of life to the suburb.
The New Quarter, also called the central quarter and the public quarter, includes more centralized (and organized) facilities built once Argyre’s role as a permanent settlement and a transport hub were established. This planning includes the ‘crossroads’ style arrangement of the new quarter at the new center of Argyre settlement for land train access, the space set aside for rail connection, the centrally located airship port, and so on. The ‘settlement management’ facilities of Argyre are located Care was taken to ensure minimum exposure of staff to the harsh environment outside, which takes the form of a series or ordered tunnels and overhead walkways, high enough to easily clear a loaded landtrain or an industrialmech. The center of government for Argyre is currently located in the New Quarter under Mayor Kent McAlester.
The North Quarter was established and is operated by Eisen Mining. Most of the mining claims of Eisen Mining are north of Argyre. The center quarter and North Quarter are almost one kilometer apart, connected by the main north-south landtrain road. The separation was for autonomy and for room to expand. It is possible to see the other, for permitting, but more commonly only the floodlights of each settlement are visible through the fog. It is effectively one structure comprised of a series of landtrain bays laid out in parallel tunnels. The main feature of the complex is a series of elevated observation-decks above the landtrain garages attempting to provide a well lit social area with maximum views to offset the generally gloomy and claustrophobic atmosphere of the lowlands. However by all accounts this attempt failed and the spectacular view of fog and dim lighting outside did nothing to offset the psychological impact of the fog and dim lighting.
The South Quarter is a traditional suburb of roads and buildings with similar construction style to the center quarter. It is connected off of the New Quarter, and dominated by Larsson-Baxter Mining. Mining teams from Larsson-Baxter Mining are spread around Argyre so traffic from them will often go through the other quarters. Unlike Eisen Mining, the executives of Larsson-Baxter Mining thought that having their workers living together with the other people in Argyre would be a more effective method of combatting the psychological impact of long term lowlands habitation than trying to make a self contained complex with crafter simulated environments.
