The harsh fluorescent light beat down on my desk like the desert sun. Sitting in the cubicle, I felt a bit like a skeleton in the Gobi, sun-bleached and picked clean by scavengers, just waiting for the sand to engulf whatever remained, only instead of scavengers I had managers and team leaders, and instead of sand, I had a mountain of reports threatening to cover me.

For the last three weeks, I had been trying to talk myself out of leaving Wang Microsystems. After all, Chuan-Fu had been an acquaintance of my father’s, and he did give me a start in the corporate game. On the other hand, ever since I started with the company, I had been constantly passed over for raises and promotions even though I received sterling reviews from all of my managers and project members.

I didn’t understand it. After all, Chuan-Fu himself told me that he had big plans for me in the future during my last review! What could be more promising than encouragement from the head of the company? Maybe I had hit the glass ceiling.

I spent a quiet, solitary lunch contemplating my place in life (generally) and at Wang Microsystems (specifically). Upon returning to my cube, I noticed a message from my direct supervisor. It appeared that I would spend another six months in Audit. My request for a transfer into the Applied Magicks division had been denied. Again. It was time to start working on my resume, no doubt about it.

I spent a few hours going through and updating things to reflect the last six months of achievements. I couldn’t help but wonder what might have been had things worked out a little differently. Maybe I could have worked for one of the major corps, or perhaps I could have been a trid star if luck had been on my side. I had always believed that if I invested enough time and effort into my Magic, things would pay off. Instead, I found myself trapped in a salaried hell with nowhere to go and nothing to look forward to. I hadn’t felt so disappointed

I considered my options: I could try to work my way into one of the bigger corps in a larger city. I possessed a SIN after all, and I had enough raw talent to get my foot in the door somewhere, probably. But where would I go? I could speak English, maybe something in North America as a translator? But that would be so far away from home, from everything I’d ever known. I’d heard stories about the larger Hong Kong Corps hiring people with magical talents, but with my background at Wang Microsystems, there would likely be concerns of corporate espionage. Especially amongst the lower level corps, this sort of thing was common enough that my defection would be suspect and attract the wrong kind of attention. It would probably be years before I would get a chance to do anything of consequence. If only I’d been born in a larger city, my talents would have been noticed by one of the big corps.

I tried calling some headhunters to put my name in with the HR reps with the corporations, but nothing materialized. Days dragged into weeks. I spoke with the headhunters personally, and they all assured me that my resume had been delivered, but I just didn’t have the experience they were looking for. I was depressed. I was in a situation with no real options, at least no good ones. I decided to give up on looking for new jobs and focus on trying to work harder to advance within Wang Microsystems.

Sometimes, it’s better to be lucky than to be good. I had the fortune to fall into the perfect situation. Wang Microsystems was looking into the purchase of a competitor, one with some modest magical assets, and as the only Awakened on staff that was not currently assigned to a project, I would be the liason to the consultants auditing the competitor before the sale. That was the first time I met Zhang Xin and the rest of Proper. It took several months of work to do a thorough check of their holdings. Over that period, Xin offered me guidance and took notice of my diligence, and when things had concluded, she offered me a job in Macao. It didn’t take me long to accept, and I had packed my meager belongings and resigned in the span of three days.

Mr. Wang was disappointed, but he handled it in the quiet sort of way I would expect from a parent, and that made it harder for me to accept. It wasn’t until about three years later when Wang rolled out a line of magical accessories based on some of the intellectual properties purchased from the project I’d worked on. Word got back to me that by leaving, I had unintentionally set back their operation by over a year. Wang was understandably bitter, but it was too late for me to make amends. He certainly could have let me know what he had planned, but he saw no need to explain himself to a subordinate. So, I left things as they were, and I believed that my mistake was in the past until his name surfaced in the City Council elections. It made me second guess my decision to leave, but only for a second. Maybe I had lost a chance to be a part of an up-and-coming corporation, but I’d gained a mentor and a friend, and I’d touched the shadows, leaving that stark, fluorescent-lit cubicle behind forever.

Tenryu spends a full day and night by himself in his room, basically absent from reality. no noise is heard from behind his door. no movement. no sightings of him stepping out for food or even a stop at the bathroom. behind that solitary door is a statue made of flesh, lament, and reflection.
The next morning, Tenryu emerges with a somber yet relaxed aura. “Hey fellows, it is time to do some shopping.”

• Also the team beleives the kidnappers are related to MET 2000
• The team begins hitting up Merc bars on the west side of Macau in an attempt to find the Redhead from the abduction, or someone that knows her or someone that knows about the Mk1 Death Dealer rounds. They have little luck. However, By the end of the night they draw enough attention to themselves that someone plants attempts to plant a tracking dart on their vehicle. The team hears the sound and finds the dart a few minutes later.
• Knowing they are being watched the team uses the tracker as bait to ambush any persuers, however no one comes.
• The Team Meets up with Deng Sai-Kan and Grahm Kim to discuss how to move on. The team urges Deng to attempt to setup a meeting with Thomas moy, but he is unable to contact him by phone. The team also asks Deng use his Renaku IT personel to track down the RedHead, later in the evening a hacked traffic cam outside of MET 2000 HQ gets a photo ID match for the Redhead, however the recording was from 2 days before the abduction. The team also works with Renraku to determine if the tracking bug can be reveresed traced, it cannot
• Dredger and Tenryu move on to Thomas Moy’s house on Lantau Island and Tenryu breaks in to find the house completely empty.
• The team also seraches MET2000 territory in macau to find Helicopter landing sites where the the Blacked out Helo may have landed. They find no suspicious activiity at any Hospitals, Police Stations or otherwise. The Helo has probably been well hidden by this point, where ever it is.
• The team realizes that the Black Chrysanthemums are the most skilled group in the Hong Kong area at Human Trafficing, and know that Deng Sai-Kan has enemies within the Traid organization. In turn the team walks into the hive that is the Kowloon Walled City in an attempt to make contact with the Traid.
• The team begins paying out bribes to get people to point them in the direction of the Traid HQ. The team moves Deeper and deeper into the Lyrinth of flith that is the walled city, and after enough time a Triad posse begins to follow them. The team stops talk with the Traids, insinuatting that they are looking to get hired by them. A few more traids show up and tell the team to follow them to meet their boss.
• The team is escorted to a large red door a few blocks away where they are asked to enter one at a time for their interviews. BMW steps inside and get jumped by a team of three Traids and is quickly knocked out but not before warning the rest of the team about the ambush.
• The fight that rages on from this point is a tough on. 1 of the 2 Renraku body guards with the team are killed, Tenryu, Dredger and BMW are unconscience and Chuckles and the last Renraku body guard are able to drag them out of the walled city, but not after killing 9 Traid footsoldiers in the process
• When the team wakes up, they are at Splint and Scar-face Cho’s street Doc clinic getting brought back to health.
• The team immedaitely calls Deng Sai-Kan and Grahm Kim to find out what the situation is. While unconscience the deadline from the blackmail letter had come and gone. That night, before midnight while the team was recovering from their fight with the Traids, Deng ventured over to the Saeder-Krupp Swiss Bank building in downtown Hong Kong in an attempt to personally speak with THomas Moy. Deng was allowed enterance but all of his personel, including Grahm Kim and his body guards were forced to stay at the gate and Deng ventured in alone. While in the building Deng made a call at 11:50pm initaiting the campaign to clear Thomas Moy’s name, and ruin his own reputation. Deng emerged from the Saeder Krupp Building with his daughter, drugged unconscious but alive. When he returned back to Renraku HQ he received a call from Corporate HQ in Japan. Deng informs the team he and his family are leaving Hong Kong immedaitely for Japan and wish to be off the mainland by morning, not notifying the Police of any happenings. The team gets paid for their efforts but everyone is saddened by the failure. Grahm Kim takes it especailly hard as Deng was his highest profile client and this does not bode well for his Bodyguard bussiness PR. Deng also asks that this entire operation be kept secret, he and his Bosses in Japan will figure out how to handle this sitation on a “corporate” level.

BMW gets in the door to Cowls industrial building with no issue. You enter and take a seat in one of his guest chairs, and wait the ussual 5 minutes before Cowl appears.

Cowl Greets you kindly with a bow and takes a Seat. “So Black Moth, what can I help you with today?”

BMW proceeds to inquire about the details in Shun Sai-Kan’s Kidnapping, Cowl listens intently to her story and looks at the picture of the Redhead, the chopper.

“I do not know who this woman is, or who is behind the kidnapping. All I know is Council members have a lot of enemies and I try not to get involved when ever possible. But, if you find this woman, send her my way.” He says as he hands BMW two business cards. “Good gun hands are hard to find these days as Mercs ussually pay better then the average Johnson, and this one may be a keeper especially if her team was able to pull a fast one on you guys.”

Cowl also expresses no interest in getting involved with Renraku in anyway shape or form.

Deng Sai-Kan

Speaking with Deng, he gives you a list of people that may have it out for him. The list is long.. very long, nearly 50 names long. But as a council member that’s the life you live, especially as a chairman On that list is basically every council member from the Pacific Prosperity Group, every council nominee that ran and lost within the last 8 years (including Thomas Moy), a few members of the Triad Syndicates including the only Black Chrysanthemum officer anyone can put a name to, a man simply known as Hak.

When you guys bring up Saeder Krupp and express some interest in Thomas Moy, Deng’s eyes widen and he tells you why Thomas is on his list.

6 years ago, Thomas Moy was running for an open seat on the executing council. No one on the council at that time, Deng included, wanted a Lizard Lover on the council (since Thomas Moy works for Lowfyr, who owns Saeder-Krupp). Also, the Executive council which is mostly made of Pacific Prosperity Group and JapanaCorp Corperations did not want a Corp from the Allied German States on the board. In turn a handful of council Members, Deng Included, ran a secret campaign to ruin Thomas Moy’s reputation. It worked, the human trafficking accusation crushed his Rep in Hong Kong and he lost a lot of Face.

Deng informs Tenryu and Grahm Kim that that information is confidential, and explains how for the good of Hong Kong its important to keep the Council made up of strong Local corporations, and even having a chance of having a Dragons influence on the council is a risk no one can take (as players you can choose to agree with his or not, your call).

However, Deng also explains how he promoted a campaign against the Black Crysanthimum Triad to keep them from expanding out of the Walled City of Kowloon. It was a very public campaign, and everyone knew about it, but those Dark Flowers were not very happy about it.

As Dredger is walking out of Combat Inc Michelle comes running up behind him stopping him in the hall. She leans in close and begins whispering to Dredger.

“I am glad you haven’t left yet, this is to say thanks for the intel.” And Michelle kisses Dredger softly on the cheek. She then reaches into her back pocket and pulls out an assault Rifle magazine and taps it against Dredger’s chest, “… and so is this”. Once the magazine is passed to Dredger, Michelle takes her leave and Dredger proceeds out the front gate.

Teas informs you that she does have some Hacking skills, but they are minor. “Don’t you have a hacker friend of your own”, she inquires. “Oh, he is not available? Maybe you should do him a favor or something so you guys can be better friends. When I need favors, I usually need to give them first, then receive later.” You can sense the sarcasm in her voice, as she is obviously referring to the crap you guys have gotten her involved in and the favors she has done with little more then a thank you and sorry.

You also sense maybe Tesa is a little Jealous when you guys had a Guass Rifle delivered to your place (while she was house sitting) by Michelle who claimed to be a “friend” of Dredgers. Weather she is Jealous about the rifle, or the good looking woman that delivered it, you are not quite sure.

In either case, in her current mood Tesa is not very helpful.

Here Dredger, tell you what. The captain begins writing on a post-it, Here is the number to our chopper distributor. They should be able to give you each MH-53J/M IV serial number they have sold and the names of the customer who bought them. Michelle passes Dredger the post-it on which is written “Yeah Right!”

Sorry buddy, we can’t track all these Helicopters. They are pretty popular though, aside from the ones we own ourselves, I know MET2000 uses a few when their Nissan Hounds are in use. I think the Canton Confederation has some too since they can’t afford anything newer. Since these Pave Lows aren’t as cutting edge as they were 5ish years ago some people are selling theirs, I think Renraku just swapped theirs out for some Nissan hounds for their Red Sams to use. Heck, their motorpool offered to sell them to us but the price they were asking was WAY to high for the flight hours.

Concerning Radar tracking, we have no sign of Helicopter movement on Victoria Peak. Then again, it’s a good 50km away and those Pave Lows are pretty stealthly.

Oh, and the scoop on your munitions. The casings are from regular LMG rounds, yours mine, anyones. Since I don’t have the actual slug I can’t tell you much more. However, from your description of the scene they were likely suppression rounds… those things scare the hell out me. You ever seen a guy get hit with one? They make the most horrific gurgling sound as they cut through people.. yuck yuck yuck.

This round on the other hand is something entirely different. First off it’s a high powered round, from the looks of the rifling twist it came out of a battle rifle but that’s not the important part. The Captain pulls an assault rifle round out of her desk. Last year Onotari Arms, aka Saeder-Krupp’s weapons developers, released this… The Mk1 Deathdealer Round. In a nutshell it uses micro fins and a small processor with a heat sensitive receiver at the tip to steer the round toward the center of mass of a target (OOC: +1 to your dice pool for simply using this round). Onotari started selling them in ultra limited quanities to the highest bidders. But they were only available in mid calibers. Basically if you run a 20 round mag of these in a high powered battle rifle, you should have 20 corpses as a result. This is some serious hardware, its good to know that this sort of ammunition is out there. I am going to bring this to my superiors and see if there is anyway we can reward you for this intel.

• Similar to Felipe, Xin has heard about the kidnapping, news like that sweeps through the shadow and corporate community alike
• Xin would expect Shun Sai-Kan to be used for blackmail or ransom. But executive council member Deng Sai-kan’s term is almost over next month. This is the end of his 3rd 2 year term (been on the council for 6 years) so its not as if he can accomplish much for anyone, ransom or not. Everyone on the Council has enemies, the election campaigns are especially viscous. Deng must have made a bunch of enemies seeing as how he was re-elected 2 times, no one but Deng has ever done that.

• From your knowledge you believe the Red Head was using a battle rifle, and from your knowledge (Core Book, Aresenal, & War!) there are no known battle rifles that fire caseless ammunition. • Michelle does have access to a ballistics lab and if you can get the bullet and casings to her, it would take her a days time to get info, and cost 500 nuyen to it
• Michelle recognizes the chopper, its a MH-53J/M IV. That model is Called the “Pave Low” and is a specialized version of the MH-53 used to support special forces behind enemy lines. Those are used mainly by military and mercenary organizations and are often unmarked, like that one.

Flash Back
BMW works with [Contact] Chen Hui Zhong to summon her Spirit mentor. It is a process that takes a full day. Hui Zhong shut down her shop and converted it into her magical lodge, and she uses the Harvested Mage Thistle that BMW and her team obtained from their run out in Gansu. The summong was taxing on both parties but after 4 hours of ritual summoning Hui Zhongs Spirit mentor, Misucachu the Spirit of Guidance appears.

He is a wise and acient spirit who speaks in an old form of cantoneese, a language long lost to this world. It make sit difficult to hold a conversation. However, Misucachu is patient with BMW and Zhong. Now Misucachu is able to move between his plane and this world more freely. Misu informs BMW and Zhong of how he has come her with a task, the likes of which he does not even know yet. BMW and Zhong are helping Misu toward his goal, and he is willing to help them toward theirs as much as he can.

Back To Real Time @ the Sai-Kan Manor

• The crowd begins to build for the concert
• The Team begins suspecting the Animal rights group will move in soon so they begin asking the gate guards to check individuals more throughly and Dredger IDs people against the quest list at the door.
• A Motorcyle arrives at the community gate and the two names giving are already checked in on the quest list. Dredger tells the guards to turn them away. Instead they drag their Bike under the gate, knockout a guard with a stun club and charge the Estate.
  • Chuckles and Dredger meet the bike in the driveway, where chuckles destroys the driver buy shooting the bikes fuel tank, and they both dispatch the rider
• As the Bike drives up to the front of the Estate, 4 people posing as college students draw Stun battons and begin working their way towards Babu’s room. Tenryu inteceeds and engages the Animal Rights Hippies at the door to Babu’s rooms
• While this happens there is some commotion at the party on the baclcony, however the team is preoccupied with the Hippy onslaught to investigate.
• Once the Hippies are killed, some practically executed, the team attempts to investiagte the disturbance on the Balcony.
  • Smoke from a smoke grenade makes moving into the party room hard, BMW in babu form comes under fire breifly and moves to cover inside of pressing into the party room
  • The team hear’s a helicopter out back, and looks out the back window to see a well equiped team of 3 (2 male, 1 Female) move across the rear lawn toward the heicopter
  • Dredger can tell they are well trained by the way they cover eachother flanks
  • The run team gets spotted by the individuals in the back yard and one of the 3 with the Light Machine Gun lays heavy supressing fire through the large bay window into the top floor office.
  • The team dives for cover, chuckles gets winged and is unable to muster enough courage to return fire
  • BMW runs down to ground level, still in cat form and tries to cast a lightning spell twice on the helicopter before it gets away. She kocks out one of the 3 individuals but the Helicopter remains unscathed. Before departing a Red Headed woman opens fire with her rifle from the moving helicopter barely missing dredger
• The team beleives this more elite group of three were there to Kidnap Shun Sai-Kan (Deng’s Sai-Kans Daughter) and the Animal Rights attack was just a diversion.
• The Police Show up after the Event and the team gives there testimonies
• The 3 elite members snuck in equipment by hiding it insdie the newly delivered television the previous day. The Tv was sheilded (which is normal for TVs) thus the scanners at the gate did not pickup the weapons
• Upon Going over the list the Team finds out..
  • All the Hippies came in posing as people from Shun’s Quest List that had actually not replied to the Facebook invitation (implying that Shun’s account was very likely hacked)
  • The three members of the more elite team had names on the Quest list that didn’t even appear on shun’s facebook invite (again a Hack job).

[Contact] Grahm Kim arrives early the next day with Deng Sai-Kan and his wife and informs the team he will give them whatever support they need to find Shun and the kidnappers. The team is encourage the persue the kidnappers as quickly as possible, because Lone Star has alot of red tape which will likely delay their investigation.

So, I’ve volunteered to pose as a counterfeit Babu in the event that our crew is unable to foil the catnappers plot. It might seem a little weird to some people if they’ve never felt the freedom of assuming another form, but being another animal for a little while is quite nice, frankly. It’s been unbelievably useful to us as a team, and it’s a great way to pass the time when we aren’t on a run. Flying around the island as a bird or lounging on the roof of our place in the sun as a cat or tromping through the jungle as a gorilla or whatever, it’s incredibly therapeutic. There are a lot of human social constrictions that an animal can completely ignore, and doing so is relaxing. It’s kind of like taking vacation time an going to a completely different world without ever leaving home. Everything changes.

To illustrate my point, the other day, I was catting around our place, and no one even noticed I was there. I could just hang out around Chuckles’ workshop and watch as he got incredibly drunk, then incredibly inspired, then too drunk to continue working, all in the span of a few hours. I doubt he would have just let me watch that happen under normal circumstances, but since I was a cat, my presence was less noticeable. Plus, things look really different from a changed perspective. The city actually looks peaceful from a bird’s point of view!

But, I’m excited about the chance to be an ocelot for a while. I hope that I don’t have to do anything drastic, but if the time comes, I’ll have to remind these environmentalists that ocelots can be ferocious beasts when they aren’t busy spraying multimilliom nuyen homes and eating Kobe beef.

The girl herself is fairly harmless, although she seems to have dug under Dredger’s skin fairly quickly. I’ll have to check in on him and make sure that everything is going well… he seems a little distracted lately. Of course, I haven’t forgotten that he made a grave error in contacting Cowl without discussing the merits of the meeting with the rest of the group. He has potentially jeopardized our position with the most lucrative contractor we know as well as opened himself to unwelcome scrutiny and potential to be leveraged by a being with immense power and no hesitations to exploit others, if the stories in the Shadows are to be believed.

Chuckles seems to be enjoying himself, and Tenryu is the consummate professional, as always. I can only hope that the activists heeded my warning and have decided to call off their cat abduction, but they seemed too foolhardy to make such a decision. So, I will wait. In the meantime, I will enjoy scratching my balls and purring.

• On the other side of things Tenryu gets a job offer to do the exact opposite and protect The Sai-Kan family house, daughter Shun, abd Ocelot Babu.
• BMW turns down the oringal job from the South Asian Animal Activist group to steal the ocelot. However, they are still planning on coming.WHAT A TWIST….right?…right?… god I am the worst GM ever
• The Team meets with [[:contact-grahm-kim | [Contact] Grahm Kim]] and Deng Sai-Kan at a sushi restaurant to neogiate terms
• The team beings prepping for the security contract, looking into weapons, armor, ammo and magic items.
• The team arrives at Deng Sai-Kans on time, discusses the house layout with his personal body guards, BMW attempts to befriend Babu and Shun.
• A Halo3DTV gets delivered for Shun and her friends to watch a pay per view concert on that saturday night. The delivery goes without event
• The team moves Babu into his kennel and hides him in the garage with Chuckles watching him. BMW in turn changes her form and becomes Babu.
