Papers of Dread

Third Session

October 04, 2011 03:26

After the epiphany the group had concerning the presence of Mi-Go, and what they may be up to, the group decides to call it a night and pick up in the morning. Rosalee Welldo is awakened by a call from Dr. Kenneth Dawn reporting a dozen new cases of the disease, some from people he never treated! Before it was always one or two people coming down at a time, so this indicated something new.

Rodney Beckett‘s knowledge of geology and the area identifies several mines in the area, but only one with traces of radioactive materials (something that the group focused on as important). The group decides that since they don’t know how to stop the drain the sickness is causing without actually killing the sick people, they will check out the mine. They grab their guns (or in Rosalee’s case a bow and sword) and head out.

At the mine there are already several cars, including that of Sheriff Hope. Early Walker attempts to disable the other cars and then leads the group into the mine, successfully evading discovery. They find an open area that includes twelve cultists surrounding a 20 foot metallic cube. A Mi-Go is perched on top of the cube apparently manipulating things.

As the group watches, a slowly growing humming noise begins to rise to disturbing proportions. Not wanting to see the eventual outcome of this, the group opens fire on the Mi-Go. The Mi-Go survives the initial onslaught and returns fire with some sort of alien cold spraying device, injuring Early. The group then brings down the Mi-Go.

Meanwhile, three of the cultists, including the Sheriff, are shooting the strange alien devices at the characters. In the ensuing fight, the players drop most of the cultists, but they too fall one by one until only Rosalee still stands, facing a trio of cultists with her sword. She drops two, but the final one lands a blow to her head and she slides into unconsciousness…

A few hours later they wake up facing the night sky. They are lying near their vehicles, the other vehicles are gone and the mine is collapsed. They have no idea how they got there, but they are alive. They check into a hospital and later learn that the dozen sick people have recovered.

A week later they check out and return to the inquiry where they learn that a third set of documents has appeared…

Second Session

September 27, 2011 03:47

Finishing their talk with Dr. Kenneth Dawn, the characters debate their next move. Rosalee Welldo goes to her scheduled meeting with Spencer Hastings where she learns that her offer to donate to the organization has been accepted, along with her conditions of knowing the identities of the chapter’s membership. She does not tell Mr. Hastings of her conversation with Dr. Dawn.

Meanwhile, Early Walker and Rodney Beckett return to the hospital where Dr. Dawn allows them to go through the medical records of those who have died from the mysterious illness. They discover that the initial symptoms are fever-like, followed by delusions and physical deterioration. Death occurs one to three weeks after onset of the initial symptoms.

Gathering once more at the diner, the group decides to head out and check Lutie Simmons’ shack. They find a messy shack, but no signs of violence. They do find evidence of occult activity on the part of the shack’s resident, including items useful in communication, summoning, and energy transference magic.

Upon leaving the shack, Rodney is shot by someone in the surrounding woods. Early sneaks out and sees someone running off in the distance, but decided not to give chase. Upon examining Rodney, it’s obvious that the wound is minor, despite his expressions of shock and outrage.

Rodney and Rosalee head to the Sheriff’s office to report the shooting and hopefully get him to reveal some information. While they do that, Early taps the Sheriff’s phone line. The Sheriff denies any special knowledge of Lutie, but Rosalee can tell he is more familiar with her than he is letting on. Rodney fills out a complaint for the shooting, and then the two of them leave.

After they have left, Early overhears a phone call between the Sheriff and someone in Arkham where the Sheriff says that he will be late, but is on his way, and the other person says they will hold the ritual until he gets there.

Early puts down the tap and gets the others and they follow the Sheriff as he leaves. He leads them to the Circle Rite Lodge and enters the building. Early picks the lock to a side door and they follow the sound of chanting to the basement where they see thirteen robed and hooded figures in a circle chanting around a large insectoid creature. The creature responds to the chanting in a strange counter chant. The circle appears to be holding some sort of conversation with the creature. At the end, the creature fades away.

The characters attempt to leave, but the cultists spot Early and Rosalee and shoot at them with strange alien devices. Rosalee is hit, but not disabled, and the two make it outside. The cultists do not pursue them outside the building and let them drive away without further interference.

The three return to Miskatonic and report what they have discovered to their patrons in the Armitage Inquiry. In doing so, Rodney comes to an epiphany of sorts as his brain correlates bits and pieces he has read in the dusty tomes of the restricted section. He realizes that the insectoid creature was a Mi-Go, and that the chanting referred to earthquakes and wealth. Also, that the deaths of the disease victims, if channeled according to certain rituals, could be used to power communication with the Mi-Go.

After Rodney reveals this to the others, Early recalls that Mi-Go are often associated with mining in the texts hes read, and that mining is often accompanied by earthquakes.

With this new information in hand, the characters must decide what to do next.

The First Documents

September 20, 2011 03:29

The campaign begins with the player characters being summoned to a meeting of the Armitage Inquiry‘s Inner Circle at the Orne Library on the campus of Miskatonic University. There they find the members arguing over something. Dr. Henry Armitage takes over the meeting and explains to the player characters that the Inquiry is in possession of a set of documents that appear to be written by himself, Dr. Armitage. Only, he doesn’t recall writing them, and they claim to be from the future.

This leads to a discussion from the other members of the Inner Circle as to what the papers really are, which ranges from a human hoax, to a symptom of Dr. Armitage’s mental breakdown, to their being exactly what they claim to be. Dr. Armitage once again ends the argument and explains to the characters that they have been brought in with the hope that they can investigate these documents.

The characters agree and begin to examine the documents closely as the others leave the library. In addition to reading the documents closely, they also test them and discover the presence of various substances. Tests performed by Rodney Beckett show that there are at least two different types of human blood on the document. Meanwhile, Early Walker decides to pass a geiger counter over the document and picks up a faint trace of radiation.

Eventually they decide to follow up on some information concerning the Circle Rite Lodge and the Helping Hands organization, as this appears to be the most promising lead. The information indicates that either or both organizations may be involved in the murder of hobos for occult purposes, so Early Walker heads out to talk with some hobos. He learns that the Helping Hands chapter in Arkham is largely defunct, but that the nearby small town of Lynnfield has an active chapter that is quite helpful.

The group heads to Lynnfield where they discover that there has been a number of strange illnesses that have led to deaths in at least some cases. While Rosalee Welldo attempts to get more information out of the Helping Hands chapter by offering to make a large donation, Early heads out to talk to more hobos. His investigation leads him to a Dr. Kenneth Dawn who eventually tells a tale of stolen blood samples and a woman named Lutie Simmons who appears to have used the stolen blood to make the donors sick. Meanwhile, the Sheriff appears to have been covering all of this up.

It turns out that Dr. Dawn is on the board of the local Helping Hands. The group asks him to keep quiet about what they’ve talked about to his fellow board members until they’ve done more investigating. Rosalee then leaves to talk to chairman of the Helping Hands board, Spencer Hastings.
