Episode 7: The Changing Times

September 28, 9999 04:00

Episode 7: The Changing Times

Seems that the first moves of a much larger game are unfolding, and a choice needs to be made. Simon has received a proposition that will definitely change the political landscape of the House, and war seems to be on the horizon. Blood will be spilled on the green lands of the Reach if the course cannot be changed. Where will House Tuttle stand? It has already went with one rebel who was able to make the name Tuttle noble. Will history repeat itself, or will House Tuttle prove that it is a loyal vassal to the Tyrells? Is House Tuttle ready to take up arms or will it stand by while history is being made?

What Happened

The Changing times introduced an entourage of folks to Shell Island. The Night’s Watch, a Tax Collector, Arda Cockshaw and a messenger from the Arbor. The two Nights Watch, Lyman Troupe and Garrett Thorpe where looking for recruits, while the tax collector, Edwyn Morris was looking for the yearly taxes. Arda Cockshaw came to the island to be Lady Tuttle’s handmaiden and Meridora’s replacement, while the messenger delivered the message that Lord Redwyne was due within a day.

Meanwhile, Lord Tuttle leaves Maera to attend to the guests. He and Simon take a ride out outside Tannenhall to tell Simon some news. There, they were ambushed by badger wielding bandits who where summarily cut down or captured by Dylan and Evan. Coming back to Tannenhall, Simon receives word that a murder occurred on the Handsome Mary and goes to investigate. Also Lord Tuttle tells Simon to prepare to escort Lord Redwyne to port.

While out, Simon instead intercepts Tyrell ships heading toward Shell Island. The ship has a messenger who is to deliver words to Lord Tuttle. They go to port, stop by the inn and then go to Tannenhall. The messenger is escorted to Tannenhall and he delivers the message to throw Lord Redwyne into the dungeons.

The next day, the Night’s Watch leave with recruits, including Lyndon Tuttle and the captured bandits. Lord Redwaynes comes to Shell Island. The last scene introduced Lord Paxter Redwyne as he beseeched Lord Tuttle to help him find his wife and children.

Aftermath

The fate of the Tuttles hangs in the balance. The gears of politics and the cogs of war are definitely turning, and the Houses of The Reach are the pieces of the puzzle that will soon come together. Even though it is business as usual on Shell Island, the fact that Lord Paxter Redwyne is on the island and a note from Lord Mace Tyrell ordering Lord Tuttle to throw him into the deepest dungeon that Tannenhall sits awkwardly on everyone. Then there is the note itself – it may be suspect, it may be the real thing. One thing is for certain, the times ahead are in the midst of a change that will shake Highgarden and the noble houses of The Reach itself to their very roots.

Elyana's Journal: Murder, Crows, and Poetry

September 28, 9999 03:00

Our little port has been very busy lately. Two Brothers from the Wall, a new maid for Lady Tuttle, a messenger, a tax collector, and let us not forget a murder. There are things afoot of grave importance in the Hall. I, however, am only responsible for making sure our guests are fed and housed.

My Lady Maera needed my assistance in translating a book. Turns out it was Bravosii love poems. I had to fight away a fierce blush at one particular poem. It was one my darling Syrio read to me often during our affair. Maera was looking for clues, we found two. Neither one made much sense.

Later after dealing with the lecherous tax collector I arrived back at the Hall just before the messenger was presented to Lord Tuttle. I chanced to overhear the messenger mumble under his breath that it was strange his pouch was was unsecured. I informed my Lady of that tidbit as soon as I could.

Early the next day the Nobles were presented with the conundrum of what they should be doing with Lord Redwyne. Arrest him, or treat him gently. I do not envy them this choice. I fear either way it may sweep our tiny little island into the storms of war.

Meridora 4

September 28, 9999 02:00

Is preoccupied with properly concocting the tonic for Lady Tuttle. Unless the new handmaiden attempts to get into Meridora’s way or interfere with Lady Tuttle’s recovery, Meridora will ignore her.

Should the new handmaiden get in her way, Meridora will address the problem to Lord Tuttle. He is the one who installed her in the castle, so an outsider has no sway over Meridora’s function.

Back Home

September 28, 9999 01:00

After a short vacation, I’m back at work.

Arriving back from a productive trip to Oldtown, the island was a happening place. Many new people had arrived and our dear Lord Aleric Tuttle was happy to see his son. On my way back to the castle I met the lord on the road and he requested my escort as he and his son rode about on the island.

While I had no wish to ride when simply walking would do, I prepared the most calm horse in the stable and rode down to meet them. As I rode up I saw the lord, his son, and our new master of horse in some distress. People were fleeing the scene to each side. Sure this was more banditry from the Shell Island Rebels, I rode down one. Not much of a fighter, I cut his legs before running down the other and doing the same to him. Unable to walk, I dragged and kicked them back to Lord Tuttle and left them for his justice as the master of horse and I both rode down the other attackers. Since they were on foot in open country, the delay did not count for much as we rode them down with ease. Expecting the rebel to defend himself I feinted with a blow to the heart before a strike at his legs. Unfortunately for him, he never moved his sword in defense. After my feint to the heart pierced the rebel, he fell dead to the ground. Thankfully I had already captured two men that could be questioned.

Unfortunately they did not have much to say since they were simply foot soldiers with no knowledge of the rebel’s organization. But attending their sentencing as well as the feast that night, I was able to meet our new arrivals. I even came across one of the men of the Night’s Watch at the inn. While he seems to be doing his duties, I suspect that there is more here than meets the eye. I would not be surprised if it turns out that these men in black are mere agents of the hand of Hour Gardener trying to force the hand of House Tuttle by tricking them into attacking the House Redwyne or another House of the Reach. The appearance of two men from the Night’s Watch at this far corner of Westeros at just this moment is too unlikely a thing to call coincidence.

It should be interesting to see how it all plays out. Personally I hope that they all kill each other. As long as my sister stays safe and doesn’t get to adventurous, it will all be fine in my book.

Ser Gareth's Journal: "At Long Last"

September 28, 9999 00:53

Life was easier when I was but a mere knight. It is much different when your every action wields the potential to affect politics in a way that is threatening on a good day and disastrous on a bad one. The most recent story has us all sitting on the edge of our chairs. Arrest Lord Redwyne to appease our banner lords, the Tyrells? Or side with the Redwynes and be branded an outlaw once again? And what to make of the Gardners, a house that was supposedly destroyed long ago, only to resurface and seek the help of House Tuttle, which has the reputation of a known traitor?

My personal opinion is clear on this. Arrest Lord Redwyne but treat him gently until more light can be shed on the situation. If we side with the Redwynes and they lose, we lose everything. If we side with the Gardners and they lose, we lose everything. If we side with the Tyrells and they lose, at the very least it can be said that “once a traitor is not always a traitor.” I pray that my lords and ladies will make the right decision. A wrong one could mean the end of House Tuttle.

All the talk of rightful claims to Highgarden have become tiresome. If there is anything to be learned from Robert’s Rebellion, it is that rightful claims mean nothing if you don’t win. Robert Baratheon did not have a claim on the throne, but he’s been sitting on it unchallenged for four years now. The Tyrells, although they sided with the Targaryens during the war, have been forgiven and not only remain to be the primary power in the Reach but also the Warden of the South. Is there nothing to be learned from this?

Episode 6: Out on the Town - Part 2

September 27, 9999 04:00

Episode 6: Out on the Town – Part 2

House Tuttle is the toast of the Reach, and their fame has reached far and wide – and most notably – to the ears of the other Tuttles. With fame comes responsibilities, and it seems that one of those responsibilities has been lost in Oldtown. Timothee Tuttle, first cousin to Lord Tuttle himself has been lost in Oldtown for the past week, and Lord Tuttle’s other brother’s widow Noamie is desperate, turning to her up-and-coming brother in-law for some aid. But, is all what is seems? Does Noamie have an agenda that includes using House Tuttle? Lord Tuttle sends his children to meet up with their household staff already in Oldtown to discover the truth.

What Happened

Simon total arrives in old town aboard the blue lion. He meets everybody at the doc’s, including Evan Onslow Lord Tuttle’s new hire. Not long after the retainers had left for old town, and no cane informing Lord Tuttle that his nephew Timothy had been kidnapped. Lord Tuttle sister-in-law Naomi was desperate to find her son. Armed with the note and location the he needed to go, Simon gathers everyone and and they go toward the in were Naomi is at.

Lady Noami doesn’t seem very convincing. For a woman who has just lost her child to the streets of Oldtown and the possibility of being lost forever, she is incredibly dry eyed. She also seems evasive when questioned. And on top of that he’s wearing find close and has a servant. This doesn’t ring true with Simon’s memory of his aunt. Although he has misgivings, Simon decides to press on with finding the boy.

Everyone gives their suggestions about where to find the boy. Elyana and Miradora go to the kitchens and inquire if they seen the boy. The cook said that he had left the day that he was kidnapped with a man who was dressed in armor and green a gold clothes. It didn’t seem like a kidnapping to her. Simon went to the some inns in Oldtown and so did Evan.

Simon first goes to the Starry Sept. He talked in old gentleman, who was presumably one of the priests who is there to help worshipers find their way. After some questioning, Simon did not make any headway in finding the young man. Simon then made his way to the inns.

Simon was able to inquire about some things but ultimately came up empty-handed except for some small tidbits of gossip from a rich merchant. Evan wandered around the streets but could not get anyone to talk to him. Dylan decided to go to the bathhouses where he met up with Tyrion Lannister as he was being hauled away by his brother Jamie.

Almost the entire day was spent looking for clues of where the boy was at, but the group only had some speculation of what the boy’s fate may have been. Dylan that that he may have been sold off as a slave and shipped over the narrow sea. Dylan did see a ship that corresponded to the colors on the man’s cloak which was golden and green. He did not get too close to it. Simon decided that he wanted a closer look at the ship. Everyone attempts a plan to try to get onto the ship. It involves ale and one of Meridora’s concoctions to make everyone more susceptible to drunkenness. Meanwhile, Evan decided to go and try to find out more information in the ends.

The plan didn’t go quite as well as everyone hoped. The men guarding the ship with the gold in green sales were highly disciplined troops they would not let anyone on, nor would they invite the drink that was specially made for them. As a matter of fact they insist that Miradora and Elyana both drink from the cask. They wanted to celebrate but they cannot drink while they were on guard duty. All that happened was that Miradora and Elyana got drunk in they were escorted by one of the soldiers back to the blue lion.

Dylan, on the other hand, managed to fall in with a bunch of the soldiers who were wearing the green and gold. They welcome Dylan then has another warrior who has seen a lot of battle. And throughout the night they simply got more and more drunk. Late in the evening or in the morning the soldiers decided to return back to the place that they were staying flophouse that was close to the wall of the Citadel. More drink and more women in then Dylan passed out until the next morning. Then he was roust out of bed by apparently Sgt. that was in command of the troops in the flophouse. Lining his troops up in Dylan to, a man by the name of Lord green came in to inspect who was there. Soon Dylan was found out to be not a soldier and was told to step outlining go away.

Dylan hung around close to the flophouse discovered that the officers of the soldiers were staying at a place called the Inkwell Tavern that was almost right up against the walls of the Citadel. He went there and decided to conduct some surveillance. He noticed that several men seem to go up and down the stairway to the upper rooms in the tavern. He inquired to a serving made about who the men were, but she did know. She didn’t know however that there was a small boy with them that is played down in the common room occasionally. Dylan hung around for a few more hours. In the early afternoon he left for the blue lion. Once at the ship, he was dressed down by both his sister Elyana and Simon. Dylan didn’t let on what he knew except Meridora. He gave her a message that some one at the Inkwell may have the boy and keep an eye up there while he dealt with matters upon the ship. After a time. Dylan asked Evan if he could borrow his horse so he could conduct another search in old town for the missing boy. Simon got suspicious and gathered everyone up and follow Dylan and old town.

When Dylan got to the inkwell he noticed that Miradora was there. She had actually seen the boy playing downstairs along with the gentleman who was nicely dressed. Dylan Miradora above Capt. eye on everybody downstairs within a few short minutes many men came downstairs and that includes the boy. One of the men said something about the mission had gone stale and the other man said will return the boy back. As the boy was rocking past Miradora, she called out to him and called his name. The boy responded Dylan said that he was with Lord Tuttle and he was instructed to bring the boy home. The two men. The dignified themselves as Lord Green and Lord Flowers. And allowed Meridora in Dylan the following toward the docks. Halfway there they met up with Simon and everyone else. Niceties were exchanged and everyone went to the blue lion. Here Lord flowers outlined his proposal. Simon seem interested.

Soon everyone parted ways. Simon and everybody returned to the in to return the boy to his mother. Simon asked if the boy could be a page, and the only agreed. She had a look of relief in her eyes. Soon everyone was board the Blue Lion and it was cast off for thr trip back to Shell Island.

Crossing the Redwine Straits the crew the Blue Lion spot ship that was floundering in the sea, with smoke wafting from it. The sails were burnt and as Blue Lion drew closer, the crew could see dead bodies and arrows everywhere. Closer even, the name of the ship could be seen – Arbor Gold – a Redwyne ship. As a matter fact, the flagship of a Redwyne fleet. Simon ordered that the ship be boarded. It was inspected, with most everyone was dead except for one soul only looked up at Simon and said “beware the ship with the hand” before he also died. Simon took the Arbor Gold in tow and brought it back to the Arbor where he found out that Paxter Redwyne’s wife Mina their infant daughter and her two sons were aboard and are apparently missing.

With some second thoughts about what he had done, Simon set sail for Shell Island. The Blue Lion docks at Shell Island a few hours later. Everyone disembarks. Everything seems changed.

Aftermath

Simon has been left wondering if he made the right choice, or if he struck a deal with The Stranger. Shell Island must be more welcoming now that he is home and away from the political mechanations of the mainland. The question now is – what will happen in the months to come? Will the Tuttles stand fast and keep out of the possible conflicts to come, or will they cast the die and see where fortune lands? He has already given favorable ear to Hugh Gardener, who intends on regaining his family’s position as rulers of Highgarden. Either way, things are changing in the Reach for the good or bad and House Tuttle must cope with what is coming. Meanwhile… it is a nice day in the growing port on Shell Island, a place yet ignorant of what is to come.

The Journal of Simon Tuttle Vol. V

September 27, 9999 03:22

I am reminded once more the reasons of my longing for the open ocean. This journey to Oldtown was fraught with all the intrigue and politicking which I have no head for. Foolish that I was, I had thought it but a simple enough visit. A reunion with my dear aunt, and a search for a lost cousin. Things swiftly grew more complex, however.

My suspicion was first aroused by my aunt’s manifest disappointment that father had not attended to this matter himself. Further, was the rich manner of her dress and even an attending servant. I felt obliged to discover whatever deeper mystery underlay this happenstance, and enlisted the advice and services of what favored servants of the house were in the city. We had little enough success at first, and I am afraid we rather looked like chickens running about. But all was made clear at the end when Dylan and Meridora unraveled the mystery.

The Golden Company. A band of mercenaries who seem to comport themselves with a dignity belying their station. And leading them, one who claimed the ancient name of Gardener. Timothee’s adventure had been but a lure to speak with my father. A play for Highgarden is afoot now, and honor did not provide me with the ready answers I had thought that it would.

King Robert gives tentative support to this action, or at least tacit permission. There was no lie in that statement. The Lord Gardener himself comports himself with great honor and trustworthiness. The loyalty and discipline of his men speaks well of him. And I find it difficult to believe that one without honorable intentions would simply have let me leave with such knowledge of his plans without concrete support. Further….he promised the safety of my brother….

And yet, this is treason. Plain and simple. Already the House is looked down upon because our peers think us disloyal dogs. Would not throwing in with Gardener prove all our detractors to be correct? And the attack on the Redwyne ship….our oaths demand that we give aid to the Redwynes. Are we to betray those as well? Can gold and the favor of new lords truely make up for the stain on our house? And even so, would Gardener truely trust us, given that we would have betrayed one oath of fealty already for our own benefit?

I do not know. I do not know what to do. Honor says that I should fight for my lord. And honor says that I should fight for what is just. Father will look to me for a recommendation on what to do. I am the one that spoke to Lord Gardener. So the question remains…..what shall I say?

Meridora 3

September 27, 9999 02:21

The shore of Shell Island is a welcome sight. I look forward to working with Lady Tuttle. I hope to see her health improve soon. I also hope that Lord Tuttle will replace the monies I spent buying the supplies for the new treatment. My modest savings cannot survive very long if I keep spending my own money on the nobles. I thought nobles were supposed to take care of their people, it seems like I’m on the wrong side of the equation.

I’m glad that Simon decided to bring his young cousin back to the island. Hopefully he will be happy on the island.
